I really dunno where to post this but since it uses long noodle rods or ultra light rods for this fishing, I’ll just park the thread here until may be someone able could moderate this and put it on a specific forum.
In view of this probably our two MFN members babyfox and pocketfreack could shed some light to us about this intriguing fishing method/style…may be to start with; some introduction, what tackle to use..what is the sport like…where to fish etc…pictures on the subject matter as have been posted by babyfox would be even more interesting.
And as there has been no or limited source of reference except that written in chinese/japan characters the inputs from whomever considered as the subject matter expert is highly appreciated.
I’m sure this will give variation and add more color to the sport called fishing in Malaysia.
In the book “The Lore of Sport Fishing” it defines surf casting as land based sea fishing where there is surf and gave examples of fishing venues such as piers, beaches and of course rocks.
So I guess ISO fishing would be appropriate here, even in the video Surf Casting Secrets there are lenghty scenes on rock fishing, right?
Rods wise, ISO rods are not noodleish lah, waggler rods are but not ISO rods. I think they are much stiffer and they have to be ultra parabolic.
Just my thoughts, would be exciting to hear more info on this then…
aznaff…sorry for my ignorance on the definition…that being the case lets make this home fo ISO fishing[:p]
with this sport in view I finally know what to do with my 15’ telescopic daiwa…what a coincident…yum yum…while you will ply your trade in penyabong I am now toying with the idea of trying it nearer to home in a place called in tembling resort(if got kosong laaa…crossing me fingers now hehehehe…)
that being the case..we would now need babyfox and/or pocketfreak to quickly provide some theoretical tutorials like…rigging…lines…etc
Ehh guys im not a sifu or guru of ISO fishing im just a normal guy that like to explore new style of fishing that i enjoy the most.
But any way thanks for ur contribution of calling me a Sifu but really cant admit that lehhhhh pai sey lehh. Make me Malu ehhhhhhh!!!

hai yoh…babyfox…could that be you blushing sheepishly?..ermmmm…like that must take private lesson meh hehehehe…
but seriously…to start with we might need help with the kinda rig suitable for this type of fishing…as I noticed that you need floats..where do u actually place it?..how long is the snood or hook length from the float? how big is the hook?
baby-fox is dat ur ‘foreign friend’? hehe… guys, i’ll be tagging along wif sifu here if time & condition permits lah, got a really bad case of jetty/rock fishing poison ler… no thx to our sifu here hehehe…

For ISO fishing, the float rigs are rather simple actually. They use movable float position on top, followed by slip shots somewhere in the middle to balance and at the end of course is the single hook.
ISO rods are generally through action rods which are long rods rated to 50g but some are rated to 75G.
They are designed for float fishing on rocks. Normally used with thin lines lines the rod itself is very light, I tried a couple before. The one I tried had zip type reel seat and they were telescopic one of them was by shimano). Their slim butt is another feature of the ISO rod, it has been design so that you can hold the rod for a long time.
Iso fishing also included ground baiting (berleying) either with a ‘shaft’ which look like a spoon or on a swinmfeeder connected to the rig. There are a few type of rigs used in ISO fishing. Different type of floats are also used.
A good reference for there rigs is the Duel product catalogue.

About the hook size for the ISO fishing its also depend on the area of the fish size then use the approcimate hook for the fish over there.sometime small hook still can land big fish with landing net other wise the hook will be straiten. so hook wise i cant really help but the leader wise i also use florocarbon line. I like to use the Chinu hook small and tough but need to play with the fish for a while or u can use the otopus hooks that i can recomend for u. coz i only can tell u what i use over here i cant go futher than that. i dont read magazine and try to be smart and recomend it to u. i only let u know what I nomally use coz fishing is a enjoyment of all the anglers around the area.
Hook size for my area will be very small size No2 Owner or Maruto or other similar size of hook. well few day ago i have losted 4 fish while they heading toward the Jetty and broke the line of my 8lb leader hahahaha.[:D][:D][:D] But going there again tomoro. hopefully get big fish again. This time i ready…
babyfox…when u said that berleying is needed in ISO fishing, how do you actually do that?..do you simply scatter them into the spot your are fishing or you use berley cages to do that…and if u do use the berley cages where and how far from the hook do u place it?
wah 12footer u can come to pulau besar join us yes? not surfcasting oredi? totally different kinda fishing i’d experience on thr trip wif baby-fox. thos we got zero, it was fun nevertheless. especially those curious fishos, inspecting the dedak + babyfox’s fishing gears hehe… it’s priceless. the strong tide virtually make it impossible to fish, in fact the tide change lasted for a few mins. only and didn’t give us the chance to properly adjust the float to the exact position. alas, only soft nibbles cud be felt, and i had 1 last minute strike but unfortunately no hook-up. FUN anyway, hehe…
iso gears r expensive tho, unless u start pestering them distros to bring in all those gadgets ler… a special flost will cost some rm50 per piece… now go figure…
cheers

hehehe…binjai…of course i still do surf casting. but since i got a soft telescopic 15’ that i think could be used in this kind of fishing then why not for a change…and of course I am honored to join you guyz in the near future to experience this kind of fishing. Whilst I know a specially designed rod should be used, I’m adamant to use mine first..hehehe…so keep us posted on ur coming trips so that some plans could be penciled in my fishing diary hehehe..on top of that would also love to ask u many questions regarding your DIY lure making hehehehe…

normally i will berley three area left side, front side, and right side. Where i can swing my float to reach the area i fish. using my kitchen ladle to scoop the berley and throw into the water where im going to fish.
Of couse they have a spoon for it…a special spoon. well me save cost use ladle to berley [:D][:D][:D].
If u guy dont know which ladle i use…i use the chinese chef cooking ladle to use as a berley spoon [:D][:D][:D].
If a chinese chef around and read about, what im using he will shake his head and say Macam ini pun boleh !!!</font id=“size5”> or some expert ISO Sifu will also say like that…[:D][:D][:D]
