Kakilai Sg. Petani: flyer's heaven & Choo-zillas

labour day, ahh…it’s a good day IF u are not working.

that was when we decided to invade this new pond located in Sg Petani for some fly action. open only on fri/sat/sun & public holidays, and closed on weekends. i was pretty sure they’d fight darn hard due to the scheduled openings. simply called ‘Kakilai Pond’ aka Sendiri Mari.

teamed up with Chief Pirato Lannun, Choo and other Longkangites, we stepped into this footbal-field-sized arena with our fly gear at 9am and geared up…

not long after starting, we were embroiled in a frenzy of barramundis. non-stop action till we left about 2pm. really non-stop, biting even in the hot sweltering afternoon… the fight was really good, and don’t let the sizes fool you. pound for pound, they fight 2-3 times harder than Bedong Siakaps. a 2kg barra here can put Bedong 5kgs to shame!

according to the owner, there are numerous double digit barras in the pond, which we failed to entice on our minute flies. well, back to fly-tying i guess.

fed solely on fish meat, the difference is clear! no overweight, pellet-fed lazy-bums!

besides fly, we also did some ultra-light spinning…


what a great place to fly-fish!

all in all, what a great day of fly-fishing, burnt fingers, sore thumbs and aching shoulders, well worth the effort. we lost count after hitting more than 10 each, and the hitlist kept on growing!
thank god we had some time to take some pics!

from SP north toll, go straight pass the 1st and 2nd traffic lights(bandar laguna merbok). look out for a driving school ur right. at the 3rd traffic light(semeling), make a u-turn and head back. it’s the tanah merah trail right before the school. rm 30 per day, 9am-7pm. fr, sat, sun n public hols only. if not mistaken, it was featured in Chinese R&L april(not sure)

do let me know when u guys are coming up…fridays would be nicer as it’s the 1st day of the week that they open up the pond. 30th & 31st of this month would be a nice date. would be a good opportunity to meet the central sifus!

Wah…looking forward to going. Count me in, Dron. Ever since Hai Pro in Teluk Gong shut down, been itching for some saltwater action with the light fly rod.

What line u guys using, Firetiger? Better to use intermediate or fast sinking lines in such situation.

Leave some for us ya? [:D]

i was using both sinking and intermediate, choo was using intermediate, Lannun was using sinking line… surface action very poor maybe due to the hot sun. i’d suggest fast sinking…anyway, according to the owner, max depth 6-7 feet or so only af the deepest level. tippet about 15-20lb, needs frequent change. clousers & charlies work best, epoxy flies too…[:D]

not too far from bedong, abt 10 mins away. i’ve defected bedong for more than 2 months or so already…bored of ladyfishes hehehehhe.

currently still looking out for new haunts!

If you guys wanna wet your pants then go to this place [:p].The siakap are fed 4 times a week,hence the pond opening only on Friday-Sunday and on public holidays from 8am to 7pm at Rm30 p/day.
I was using a 4wt with sinking line.The bites were very frequent.Small flies attracted the smallies but when i switched to bigger flies…dats when the action really started.Lost 5 flies using 15lb tippet,switched to 20lb and it helped a lot.The pond is 5 acres and has a length of 700ft.The only setback for the fly guys were the wires dat were hanging all around but we managed not to lose any flies to the wires [;)].
Just to let you guys know…these are no Ordinary Siakap…they are on steroids (no joking)
Go give it a try. I’m sure you wont regret it.

Well…lucky you. We still haven’t got chance to try out the ladyfishes yet. Hope they’re still taking flies. :slight_smile:

for accomodation, there’s Swiss Inn & Cinta Sayang Resort… i think cinta sayang would be better coz it’s a chalet(can cram many ppl)

We’re thinking to fish Bedong on Friday and then “kakilai” on the weekend. Will firm up on the dates with Dron and get back to u.
