On the 13-17th May 2008, i went on my first ever trip to Kenyir Dam with my family. After having read so much about it over the years, finally had a chance to visit it. It was also a trip to try out our home-modded inflatable kayak outfitted with a minn-kota thruster, which didn’t perform as well as intended. Anyways, shall let the pics do the talking! [:D]

The floating jetty to board the speedboat ferry

Awaiting speedboat to ferry us to Pulau Sah Besar chalet, with our inflatable kayak, thruster, fishing gear on the jetty floor!

Enjoying the wind

Arriving at Pulau Sah Besar after a 15 mins ride
It was already almost 8pm in the evening when we arrived, so mom prepared a quick ayamas golden roaster + cucumber + seaweed soup + hot steaming rice dinner. Simple and tasty!
After dinner, dad n i proceeded to the floating jetty to check out the supposedly plentiful sebaraus that hammer baitfishes attracted by the jetty’s spotlight which he witnessed on his last trip here. In fact, we purposedly lugged seluangs + mountain river fat shrimps all the way from ipoh for them! Sad to say, there were no signs of sebs at all that nite so we retired at midnight for a much needed rest.
the next morning, i woke up at 5am and groggily wandered down to the jetty and stood there staring. The seb were there, not a very big group, but about 8- 10 of them happily having breakfast. Went to wake dad up, and we figured that we’ll be into some action in no time. hooked the seluangs, cast out and waited and waited. A few came to stare before u -turning. One nibbled half heartedly before deciding against munching on the hooked seluang! fluorocarbon-check, tasty live bait- check, tiny hook- check. Sebarau- nil. Finally we gave up and went up for breakfast when the sun rose.

came down after breakfast and set up our kayak in a jiffy.added the seats, the ice box which doubled as an elevated casting seat and actually serves as a “drybox” and mounted the electric motor. Set off at about 10pm.

the side mounted motor on dad’s self improvised mount on the inflatable. Did not work too well as the inflatable had no hull nor rudder and the offset motor placement made it horribly difficult to steer the boat!!!

first fish of the day. baby toman from a fallen tree with a storm thunderdog.

first ever sebarau from a dam for me! Caught with a small rattling lure on 8lbs fireline and shimano stimula 2-6lbs rod. Put up a pretty exciting fight before it was landed. Being on a small water craft makes landing a fish much more difficult, esp if your caft is prone to punctures!!

2nd sebarau was landed from some deep snags with a duel 3d minnow. Shot out from no where to gulp in the lure right in front of me. Was bigger than the first.

That concluded our first session which was the most productive session. Sadly, our other sessions throughout our stay there were fishless! The kind manager of the chalet even towed our inflatable to a river inlet area as our electric motor was grossly underlasting and underpowered for moving around to other fishing spots, but the picture perfect spots yielded nothing as well. Only consolation was another baby toman by my dad.

Me on icebox/drybox/casting seat
One of the reasons we alluded was the abundant rawais set by the locals there. They landed many baungs and tomans which were kept in their keepcage. Didn’t manage to snap shots of those.

Fresh fish for dinner on! Heavenly…
That concludes the report . till next time [8D]
