ALOR STAR: The Kedah Government has approved logging activities at the Pedu, Muda and Ahning dam catchment areas, a move that is expected to generate about RM16bil in revenue for the state.

Mentri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak said the move was necessary to cover the high expenditure incurred by the state following the petrol price increase.

He added that the state would call for tenders soon and award the logging contract to the highest bidder.

“We will discuss the logging method to be used with the Forestry Department,” he told newsmen after chairing the state executive council meeting yesterday.

He added that the Federal Government had promised to pay an annual compensation of RM100mil in 2003 following the state’s decision to cancel its proposed heli-harvesting project to log timber in catchment areas.

“However, until now the payment has not been made. We have also asked the Federal Government for financial assistance for the water supply to Penang and Perlis and for the rice we are producing for the country.

“Since the Government cannot assist us financially, we will carry on with the logging activities,” Azizan added.</font id=“size3”>

This is bad news, we all know these Kedah Dams carrys a rich bio-diversity and not to mention Muda Dam has a very unique and big sized Haruan population and the close to extinct green arowana. There are hornbills, tigers, elephants etc etc in the catchment area forest too.

Logging the area will be disastrous as it is the last green belt in the Norther region and what would happen to the Dams which are providing water to the 3 Northen states? As per the announcement, they are approving it without even an Environmental Study!!!

Please help… I appeal to all concern to write to papers, the Mentri Besar office and have our voice heard. PeMM, PMPP, Kagum… can do!!!

What else can we do??? This is a battle against 16 Billion, eyes were blinded by less!!! Please voice your concerns here, the more the merrier and fast. We will need attention to this issue.

Lapala,
Great work!

If I’m not mistaken, someone (MNS?)organised a big petition drive against the proposed heli-logging of muda dam area, years ago.

We can channel our complaint to the Kedah state govt, but I think we need to go to the federal level too, to make extra sure that they stop this nonsense. Who?

eh bro…read in news today…heli-timber-cutting…3 tress per hectare…not bad what? kalau conventional typed earth clearing lorry driven style tu should be 1000% NO NO…this type sound ok for laymen like me…how?

KK, perhaps Ooakin or JB can help you there, my Bahasa is not up to par. Nak ngomong ngomong boleh lar.

Bro Ooakin
It is said so bro but from pass history of logging in other places, they do not stick to 3 per hectare. There will be a depot somewhere too which would be cleared for lorries to get in to transport it out. Clearing access road = logging jugak lar, they can potentially clear a 100m wide road!! Heli direct to sawmill wouldn’t happen. And look at the projected revenue of 16B, can they get that from 3 per hector?

JB,
That was proposal by the former govt which got shelved. This one is a new proposal to revive it by the present govt. MNS and Sahabat Alam has indicated their opposition to this current one too this time. Haven’t heard if there will be any petition drives or whatever yet. The PAS govt did say it will be done after an Environmental Impact Study but seem the message is that they are proceeding with tenders b4 and talking to a Sarawak company already.

These is interesting. Dirty Politics basically. Heard that some federal links company is pulling out from Kedah too as a signal to increase financial pressures to the state.

Just got back from Kenering and Temenggor which catchments is being screwed up. You gave them 50 hectares; they will easily double that!!! That the reality.

The best is to stop these masacre from happening in Kedah. WE can give pressures BUT the state have the right basically. Am having migraine so can’t think straight now.
