Kelah Sanctuary at Sg.Chua,Putrajaya

It is heartening to see that the authority is starting a Kelah sanctuary at Sg.Chua, Putrjaya last week. The 50meter strech of the river will be a holding area before they are released in the wild.

Hopefully, the Kelah will thrive in the water of Sg.Chua chosen for its quality. The authority need to keep an eye on those Kelah because i am sure there will be unscrupulous anglers trying their luck at night when their guards are down. You know lah Malaysian, everything boleh one!

Please do not blame all on us anglers, worse damage is done by those with NETs. In the Bukit Jalil Park, it was said the guards were the main culprits.

and the MATA who were doing their beat at night.[:0]

Yeah, those are the people who harapkan pagar, pagar makan padi. They need help. But i would expect members of MFN are better than them, and give those Kelah a chance to grow, and grow and grow in size and population until they are released in the wild. Then you can try your luck. It takes all of us to make it work. If you dont agree, then i cannot help you on that.

Superreel, you wouldn’t want it to be like that! In U.S, the fisheries department is worried with the current situation of carp invasion. Search for youtube videos regarding asian carp invasion. There is a 2 part documentary video detailing the whole situation. Should serve as a reminder to us not to mess around with alien species introduction.

what i meant was sungai chua with full of kelah (jumping).[:D]

superreel,

It can become a reality if the authority is not hangat2 tahi ayam lah and the Kelah are given time to grow. Look at Tagal in Sabah, it actually works and the orang asli reap the benefits. Nature needs time to heal the damages human made in a few days.
so lets give it a try, we got nothing to lose.

Oh, in the next couple of years if Sg.Chua is open to public, i will like to propose CNR and a maximum bag limit of only 2 per person, fish must be at least 20inch long. There will be 3 months of closed season for the spawning time. Penalty for breaking the rule when caught Rm 500 per fish. What do you guys think?

totally CNR and proper handling mate.

Let’s do the maths, 2 fish per angler per day with 50 anglers at most weekends (8days/month) would translate to 800 matured fishes for just one month. Those fish in Sg Chua would not be there very long.

Sild’s suggestion is therefore more appropriate.

Lucky we have the accountant to do the calculus.

I haven’t been to Sg Chua; hope they do have an area ‘suitable’ for Kelah and not a ‘place just to have kelah’ etc. Even CNR can do a series of damages to released fishes due to unsuitable fishing practices, handling etc.

Seen a japaneese CD (Lucky Craft promo thingy) last time showing an area in Japan where they are compulsary to use only artificial lure with strictly debarbed hook. AND the best part is that they are not allowed to lift the fish out from the water, they have to release the fish while the fish is in the water to minimise any impacts to the fishes which is already having some impacts from the struggling etc (well that’s the one giving pleasure to angler).

I am not again fishing but something to think about.

ekwong,

I am ok with total CNR dont get me wrong. I am using the guidelines for Snook in Florida as a base proposal. Not everybody will catch a Kelah on that particular day as Kelah is a smart fish and very sensitive to the surrounding. We can see nowadays from various fishing trips to Kenyir by many groups, not all of them will get Kelah as the population is dwindling, and when they do the fish are small, so they have to release them under the new guidelines. Of course total ban on take home will be ideal. But still the weakness is always the enforcement which is difficult and labour intensive.

well this is Malaysia and things can be very different. You do need to take into account the general attitude of the Malaysian anglers.

to put things in pespective, towfoo pond used to allow for 2kg of tilapia as part of its entry fee. Now if you were to ask anyone who has been to towfoo, most if not all, will say they had not taken their so called 2kg of fish. Well there are very few tilapia now in the pond. What used to be considered a pest for stealing your bait is now a rarity. Question is where are all those pesky tilapias, well MrD think that “too many of the few” had taken their qouta and hence the depletion. You will need to understand that Malaysian had not reached to that level of sportfishing. Most will take some fish if they are allowed to especially if there is a fee imposed for the fishing.

… towfoo had since last year stopped the 2kg allowance.
