Sorry for the late posting . HAve been rather busy .
Poor weather condition during the DEC 8th - 17th Trip hardly produce are decent catch for Serbies . Water level was at its lowest and hardly any rain during this period.
The FACT that the entire weather phenomena has made fishing conditions difficult in most parts of Kenyir During the DEC period , though there were reports in the MALAY Forum for some decent catches during the Christmas period till early JAN 2007.
This trip only accounted for 5 small Sebaraus. THis was caught when all speed boats was
speeding thru the highway . Guess the water turbulance and waves created by our speed boats brought the sebarau to the surface . Quick reflexes and accurate casting got us a few hook ups . We never saw any more sebarau for the entire trip.
Dissapointed we decided to moved from PAPAN to Chegor with no better results . Only during the last 3 days when we move the mother boat to Lebah Kerabat bottom fishing resulted with some decent size BAUNGS and Belida During Night and early DAWN.
One of the Sebarau for the Trip …
The BAUNGS CAUGHT DURING the wee hours in the Morning ( between 2:00am )on life baits.
Large size Terobol for life bait.
The Belida Caught during DAWN on Lifebait during the short interval of drizzle.
Another BELIDA within 10 minutes ( Also on Lifebait )
Both the BELIDAS …6.5kg & 4.9kg
HOT AFTERNOON In KENYIR …
Our Arsenal … which did not bring us any luck .Bottom fishing on Lifebait was the order for the entire Trip…
Irritating MAY FLIES during the NIGHT …
No Rain … see water level…[V]
Boat ride to explore more casting avenues…
Not bad catch at all, so I presumed you have steamed baung for dinner.
Ah ha, those flies are natural warning for rainy season, they also make very good bait, use thin line tie direct to small hook and fill up the hook with those flies and flick it out near your floating house, very soon those lampam and sebarau will come rushing for it.
yes water is extremely low ever since kenyir’s dam over-flowed and now a constant release of water is done at the main dam…yeahpss some of the malay forummers jus came back frm leban kerbat and the catches was pretty bad tough..
Hi Lefty …
They are a few baits options for belidas . The terbol ( hope I spell it Correctly ) and the Seluangs. Best time to get the bait fish is during night . I had a chance to go out with with the boatman during the night up stream or river armed only with torchligth and scope nets. Believe me It is really hardwork. Since Kenyir has banned
netting we did not have any cast net for the lifebaits which would have made things easier. It was drizzling during the late evening and the boat man suggested we row out in two teams at night, staying very close to each other’s boat . Amazingly bait fish will swim up stream to lay their eggs during the rainny period .We collect
quite a decent amount of bait fish and kept them alive in a little cage tied to the side of the houseboat . THis is the first time I have seen seluangs as big as my palm and about an inch thick ( My mistake for not taking some photo shots of the baits used ) Beautiful baits. The other bait is similar to the terbol ( do not know the exact name ) but it has a black horizontal stripe from its gills to the tail.
One belida was caught on terbol and the other on the seluang . The big baungs was also caught on the big terbol .
WORMS ( ie EARTH WORMS ) accounted for most of the baungs . I bought
12 packet of worms ( pity that Cacing Gila no more on SALE ) 3 weeks before we left for Kenyir . Put them is a nice plactic container
and fed this guys with rotten organic materials like vege and fruit peels . This made the worms FAT & JUICY …[:)]

Hi Lefty …Wish you good luck ..
I have been to Chegor many times but have never caught any belidas . Both the belidas
were caught in Lembah Kerbat. However Chegor gives me lots of memories especially my
Biggest Sebarau to date 2.1kg. AND plenty of tomans thru Casting lures. Try the pencil for top water action. Chegor will always be a mystery to me .. at least this is the place
where I lost, probably my personal records on Big Live BAIT during NIGHT Fishing from the HOUSEBOAT for BAUNG . The reel drag screech out during mid night when all was asleep.
Believe me I had a spool out of 100m braidline -20lbs on a light/medium spinning outfit. This occured in DEC 2005 during the monsoon season when the rain was really heavy
and water level quite high.
Baung .. you have to park the Houseboat as close as possible to the upper streams or inlets where bait fish will swim up . Night fishing with bait fish and WORMS for baung .
Note : Usually it is the wee Hrs in the Morning (Mid Night - 3am ) is were the Giant Pak Suh Kung ( baung ) feeds.
Since you will be in Chegor in FEB CNY .. lets hope the water level is still high and if the weather permits ( Hot and Humid ) the tomans will raise . Watch for the raise and if there are toman fries try casting to disturb the fry population " BANG "
Late March / April & MAY is usually the TOMAN Spawning season where sightings of tomans pairs and fries are abundant … Pls prctice CNR as the toman stocks in Kenyir is getting depleted due to overfishing and netting by the locals before commercial fishing was banned last AUG …Only 2 years ago we can still land tomans of 5 to 6kgs . However the comman size these days are between 2 - 3kgs.
BEST OF LUCK … HAPPY FISHING … [:D]
try using rattler..it might work..but must have plenty of em since u might want it to swim very close to the bottom [:D]

geno bro..i guess the best time to go there is during june to july there…or around that period..or maybe during feb..ehehe..the best time i went there was in early july…awesome trip..
heheh…i guess u guys shud allocate some off days in june or july period..go wit the clan and enjoy some peaceful scenery and great fishing (hopefully)..its better to seek for advice frm fellow boatman b4 headin to kenyir..
Hello Bro "Hu KAh " Geno & Ming,…
Must sincerely apologized for the late reply . Have been away for the entire week , Company’s Business trip , in Johor state from BAtu Pahat to JB . Did not get any chance to catch up with the Forum
updates until this very moment .
Anyway Flood situation in Batu Pahat is still bad. Especially the low lying areas in the rubber and Palm oil estate. It is really sad to see the poor being hit by the flood situation and their livelihood
adversely affected . The rivers and drains along the kampong areas are still at a dangerous level .
Well I did manage to get sometime off to drop by our very dearly
MFN Brother’s Shop " Thomas Lee " and notice that he was actively invloved in a Care bag program ,put forward by our landlord for the flood victims . I managed to contribute 2 sets and hope you guys will do your fair bit to help out anyway you can .In fact if you have been following the forum , I believed that you can also do your bit at Tightlines & Tackle Box.
I Guess every NGOs and the private sectors are busy working out some means of aid , be it monetary or gifts and labour to help clean up the mess.
My company , I worked with ,managed to collect a contribution of RM12,000.00 from employees and donated 200 stoves to the victims in Kota Tinggi this weekend… I believe there will more from others .
At least we at MFN are not left out either.[:D].. BRavo to Vincent..
Well Geno , I am not very sure with regards to Mings reply that July / Aug will be the best time to be in Kenyir for the Serbies .
Normally July till Nov is often the Hottest of months and the water level at its lowest. Well you can still catch Sebaraus if you are hardworking and decide to go casting early in the morning @6:00am .
Still dark . Dont not start the outboard . Suggest that you row out
gently and quitely so as not to spook them.
Belidas can be caught in the morning or late evening from FEB till late NOV if you have sufficient life baits. It is normally when the monsoon starts that the Tomans / Baungs & Belidas go missing . However do check with your boatman for the Belida potential hot spots.
This year the weather is rather unpredictable.
We were in Kenyir in Mid DEC where it did not rain . Surprisingly Kuala Berang has been raining non stop for weeks but the main dam was rather hot.
If you have read the Malay forum , the BEST time for Sebaraus is about now when it is still rainning heavily ( over 100 sebarau landed ). The water from the upper streams and valleys will be gushing down stream with murky water . Sebaraus will often head upstream to spawn and return back to the lake after spawning . Just wait for the serbies at the streams or river mouth . Cast consistently into the murky water and start cranking the crank baits or lure . It is often when the lure heads out to the clearer water when it gets WHAM !!
There is no better advise then to call your boatman before any trip .
TIMING is most important . Right Place , Right time and right weather conditions.
My best trip to Kenyir was in NOV 2005 . It was rainning heavily . Fishing condition was pefect and treacherous. The current at the river mouth was so strong that we have to paddle consistently to keep our outboards facing the river mouth or we will be gradually drifting far away form our spot. Water conditions - MURKY at river mouth.
If you enjoy soggy and wet conditions for 24hrs , then Serbies fishing will be fun . Well my 2005 trip brought memories of 80 Sebarau landed on crankbaits.
April & May ( Sometime as early MARCH ) when weather conditions is hot and the water level is still high .This is the season for TOMANs.
TOMANS will start pairing and ready to spawn during this warm season . They are at the most fiery mood during mating and while caring for the off springs during this period. Just cast you lure towards any mating pair or a school of toman fries and be prepared for the take. Spot for the toman raise as they have to surface for air.
Tomans can also be caught during June till Sept / Nov before the monsoon. However during this period they are less active and often
the single lone wanderer will be caught.
Well , if you enjoy hot and dry fishing conditions , then April till AUG will be ideal ,as Ming Suggests. Great sceneries and a cool afternoon dip at the cool streams and waterfalls. Do bring along some can sardines or tuna spread and bread for sandwiches. A hot flask of coffee and you will have a nice afternoon picnic .
Waterfalls and streams can be found in Papan , Lembah Kerbat , Chegor, Asli , Buai ( or Buaya ) Terenggan etc.
Baungs can be caught through out the year except during the monsoon which is quite rare , provided you have lifebaits.
Kelah .. often rare but can still be caught on palm oil seed during July till Aug at Terenggan. Hard work man !!! Lots of river baiting with OIL Palm and patients. Well Aug is often the fruiting season for Buah Maris ie a jungle fruit( Hope I got this Spelt Right ).
HOPE THE ABOVE GUIDE WILL BE USEFUL for your trip to Kenyir. Do check with the local boatman . Local guides or boatman you can contact are Ibrahim (09-6813727)/ LAtiff / Dato Asri to name a few . Sorry I dont have the other contacts .
Ibrahim 's boat is spacious and has Atro Facilities.
LAtiff’s houseboat , tough a bit costly but make up of spacious
dining and sleeping area. Nice varander and rod holders for night bottom fishing. In fact the most beautiful boat in Kenyir.Latiff’s houseboat can house up to 15pax.
Dato Asri… He is crazy for Tapah . Plan with him for a trip to catch the giant catfish …Houseboat a bit small but still Ideal for 8 pax.
All these boats are parked at Jenaggor Damm . If you need Pengkalan Gawi boats please check with someone else.
