RK,
My personal advise to you is to at least get a 1000 series. Why? Unless your 500 series has a spare spool or you bring along a spool of line, you will end up just watching other people fish when you are unexpectedly de-spooled by some giant!
" ..managed to and 2 monter size keli with it (5 and 6kg’s).. " - that is a fantastic achievement, but agree with RR unless you have a pond with unlimited space to play around in ( less drag - let the fella run )
Even if you continue to land the biggies successfully, think about the wear and tear on your small reel - maybe they are simply not designed for this kind of a load in the longer term.
I was using a Shimano Spirex 500FA for the same thing - after about a month, everything felt " loose ", the drag felt scratchy, and I stopped using it since. What a waste of a good reel ![xx(]
Agreed with both RR & Mike…500 series reels are not built for toughness or perhaps long term stress[V]..tats why I have 2 similar reels[8D]. However having said tat…the fun on small minis is beyond description[^]…just like minis [car] owners[;)]…I guess tats the opportunity cost between fun & longlasting[xx(]</font id=“purple”>
For about the same Rm$$, with a very small weight penalty, you can get a Fin Nor Estima 100 ( 1000 series ) that is being cleared in Singapore by the agent.
Together with 10 lb braid, this is what I am currently using for the payponds.
As for the smaller low range Shimano’s, a few are currently made in Malaysia. However the ones that I use a lot are the much larger Baitrunner series - also made in Malaysia - and if a good example, absolutely no problems with them.
Before I forget, have a look also at Ryobi - some of the little ones are rather nice.[:)]
i believe most of us(me included) have the wrong mentality when it comes to small reels for ultralite fishing…
when u mention UL reels, most will think of size 750 or 1000 (shimano) reels… by default.
but for the past few years, i’ve given up on them and have changed to bigger sized reels.
u see, the problem with small reels is that line twists are more prevalent, and wind knots are not welcomed at all with all those repeated casts. the spool diameter is small, and more curls are formed as you cast.
i’ve resorted to reels like the 2500/3000 size with shallow spools in replace with the 750/1000 sizes now. even better if you can get ur hands on the ‘C’ sizes for shimano reels…‘compact’ reels, i.e C3000ss means reel with 2500 size body and 3000 size shallow spool…bigger handle, stronger body, bigger spool diameter but similar line capacity as the small reels.
in the long run, less wind knots as the spool diameter is larger, and the line curls are bigger and more manageable.
do note that for these reels, i spool up with 6lb braid/fused lines for maximum distance, sensitivity and strength.
small reel is for paypond, lakes and rivers…its very-very rare to hook-up with monster…even if that happend..that would be once in a bluemoon…RR..yes tiny reel not build to witstand the giants and there is a big posibility of unexpectedly de-spooled…but how often this happend…i used to be person who carry medium action rods (min 6 foot rod)and 5000 series reels with 20-30paun line. for the last 10 years..i only landed a monster 12kg carp with it…even in most of the payponds the fish are not that big..thank you for the input…since i moved it light tackle…i seem to catch more fish..i can feel the tiniest nibble…FiR3 TiG3R..agree you input bro…but tiny reels come handy to fight tilapia and lampams when there is no fish biting…you can see the fish run with you line…

" … even in most of the payponds the fish are not that big ". Be a bit careful with this - it does not always require a big fellow to cause your small reel discomfort.
I wore out my 500 series when the salt water payponds stocked up with 800grm - 1 kilo Mangrove Jacks, and slightly larger Jenahaks ! These guys can jerk anything loose for about 30 seconds … and you cannot have too light a drag because you do not want to fowl the fishos next to you.
The funny thing is that I had no problems with much larger Patin in a clean pond - just loosen the drag and let them run until tired.
Guess you can stay with your 500 series, but it will probably depend on your target fish, and where you are actually fishing.
Best of luck in SEA Tackle - probably see you and your friends there. [:)]
Totally agreed with Mike on the venue that we fish. If it’s a clean pond, then no problem. However, having said that, I have been fishing with my Tica Cetus for about 2 years now. Both salt and freashwater pond, clan or not so clean… Tackling minnows to titans…errr…titan to my standards…meaning real babes to sifus out there la[;)]. So far so good[^]. Have not have the need to use my brand new spare reel yet. IMHO…it’s the marriage of the reel with a suitable rod and not forgetting suitable line poundage too. I have seen many “mismarriages” that causes failures…errr…I dont mean sifu Mike and all sifus out there oh[:p] </font id=“purple”>
hehe..wkl agree with the point…watch out see takle…the newbies shall come and invade…
yes…mostly i i’m into freshwater ponds…not so pro yet to explore in salt water yet…plus…keeping in mind wear and tear of salwater does to your reel,i have my 5000 series rod on standby mode in case we want to venture out…[;)]

must concur with FT bout line twist/wind knot issue where small reels are concerned.
i see mono curls in my 5lb braid(!) when i cast, more so after repeated casts - don’t experience this with my larger sized reels
this, in spite of the shim’s line propulsion spool lip
but, it is a fun reel to use
my friend’s 1000 series identical model (paired with cherrywood 1-6lb) performs flawlessly … tempted to get that now … [B)]
hehe..havent had any time to field test it yet…next project..0.8lbs line paired with kewl or tica tiny real…would be a realy test to whack those pesky lampams and tilapia’s…it would be wonderful fight if 1 manage to land anything bigger than 1kg’s…
I pair a M.I.Thailand SS700 with a Shimano Bullwhip 5ft 5-10 lbs rod, spool with 8 lbs mono line. Quite fun in local fresh water paypond, but have yet to try the bigger species in Tow Foo n etc. So far landed 2.5kg patin that was the biggest. Simply love the SS Tournament series’ line peeling music when fighting fish, much nicer sound from heaven than the orgasm moaning [:D]
Don’t recommend reels smaller than 1000 series. I had a 5min fight with a 500g Pacu at EAK last week Sunday. My Shimano FX 1000 OFB spin-reel with Ajiking 12lbs mono had a tough time reeling in the fish, is fun lar but after the whole debacle, my reel started giving mechanical noise. Really strain & damage the reel, not so smooth anymore.
Also, my friend lost a whole spool of quality braided line to another biggie Pacu few months back bcoz he was using a 1000 series reel. Even when he try to lock the drag to max, the line went all the way out. Reel totally over-powered by fish. In the end, he had no choice but to cut the line. It was totally unexpected, just toss bait onto a random spot & the float sink & start flying!
Anyway, smaller reels, less than 1000 series are meant for Prawn fishing.
