Live! MFN in pursuit of IGFA Black Bass Record

In a matter of hours, MFN anglers from bustling KL to shining-sea Sabah (Otek Hunters) will gather together in Tawau for our common objective of pursuing a world-record Black Bass. My flight with Marlin will leave KLIA at 1640 hour today and this maybe my last posting from my notebook.

This will be our very first attempt to go for a world-record by the books – meaning sportsfishing at its finest here. To learn what we mean by the books, download these two documents from IGFA:

http://www.igfa.org/BookRule2004.pdf
http://www.igfa.org/IGFARecApplication_07.pdf

What you learn here, will also be what we will be learning for the first time (see record below which we are aiming for).

This pursuit has been planned since January 2007 (http://www.fishing.net.my/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10133). We have not met the Otekers before (except briefly for Luther who was here on a Genting spree a few months back). We ha
d dinner with him at Midvalley to get some info on the BB (i.e. habitat, fighting style, etc). Other than that, everything was arranged online or by phone.

We will be landing in Tawau around 9PM tonight and SaltigaGT will be meeting us. It is my first visit to Sabah and I am really excited! What more, this is in pursuit of our own native and very powerful fighting fish that is the awe of hardcore estuary anglers.

Whether we set a world-record for the very time, we are not sure and this is the unknown. That is why we call this a pursuit. If we don’t make it this round, we hope from our first recee experience, the next group of anglers from here will continue our quest.

I will be giving you a blow-by-blow account live from the wild Tawau rivers. Where is it? Still unknown to me but it will be revealed in due course.

What I have been briefed by the Otek Hunters (OH) is that monster siakap as a by-catch is common. Stretches of the river are still virgin like the many rods you are keeping in your utility room.

It’s now clear sky and greenlight at the rivers. What will happen in the next three days, hopefully, will be an adventure of bewilderment and filled with the unexpected.

Butterflies in my stomach? You betcha! Fear of the unexpected? You betcha? Wanna make MFN anglers proud? Definitely!

Don’t cheer for me. Cheer for the nine other MFN guys who, with determination, made this expedition happen. Fortune favours the brave.

So strap on your seat belt and fly with us to the Land Below The Wind!

Next posting will be from my trusty Nokia 9300 and it maybe short, due to the GPRS connection. Over and out…

Vincent

P.S. – We thank Mr. Quek of Pure Fishing (www.purefishing.com) for sponsoring the Berkley rated IGFA line for this attempt.

All the best and enjoy your 4-day trip. Will see you back in KLIA. You forgot to tell us when you’ll be returning.
Take care and don’t worry about us.

4.30PM. We’re done with French Fries at the domestic departure hall. Lovely to fly on this calm Thursday to Tawau. Well, you don’t really expect heavy load on a weekday. That’s fine with us as we mentally work out what we need to do when we arrive later.

Marlin and I thank forumers who sent us sms well wishes. We’ll keep you posted more later. 15 minutes more before we enter the plane.

8.10pm. Landed KK airport. Could say a harrowing flight as the plane went smack into a thunderstorm on the way. I thought I saw lightning strike the plane. I was not COOL but Marlin was (or pretending).

Awaiting to get back into plane to Tawau

If I had a wife who would go all the way to KLIA to wait for my return, and not even knowing when to expect me - I would scramble to respond to her post ya ? Hmmmm …

All the best - go for it guys ! [:)] Hope she is still waiting when you guys come back with the record in your pocket.

HAHA Vince, it seems that in your excitement to go to Sabah, you forgot to report to your Home Minister!!!

Take lots of pics, have a blast and… As they say in Japan, “KAMBATTE KUDASAI!!!”

Happy landing Vince & Marlin, say Hi to the OH.
My regards to all!!

What is the method of fishing for BB’s? Trolling or casting to structures[?]

…and so the adventure begins as the guys unload the boat on wide 300 metre Kelumpang River. It all begins from here admist the tropical jungle and weaving palm oil estate around us.
