In a matter of hours, MFN anglers from bustling KL to shining-sea Sabah (Otek Hunters) will gather together in Tawau for our common objective of pursuing a world-record Black Bass. My flight with Marlin will leave KLIA at 1640 hour today and this maybe my last posting from my notebook.
This will be our very first attempt to go for a world-record by the books – meaning sportsfishing at its finest here. To learn what we mean by the books, download these two documents from IGFA:
http://www.igfa.org/BookRule2004.pdf
http://www.igfa.org/IGFARecApplication_07.pdf
What you learn here, will also be what we will be learning for the first time (see record below which we are aiming for).

This pursuit has been planned since January 2007 (http://www.fishing.net.my/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10133). We have not met the Otekers before (except briefly for Luther who was here on a Genting spree a few months back). We ha
d dinner with him at Midvalley to get some info on the BB (i.e. habitat, fighting style, etc). Other than that, everything was arranged online or by phone.
We will be landing in Tawau around 9PM tonight and SaltigaGT will be meeting us. It is my first visit to Sabah and I am really excited! What more, this is in pursuit of our own native and very powerful fighting fish that is the awe of hardcore estuary anglers.
Whether we set a world-record for the very time, we are not sure and this is the unknown. That is why we call this a pursuit. If we don’t make it this round, we hope from our first recee experience, the next group of anglers from here will continue our quest.
I will be giving you a blow-by-blow account live from the wild Tawau rivers. Where is it? Still unknown to me but it will be revealed in due course.
What I have been briefed by the Otek Hunters (OH) is that monster siakap as a by-catch is common. Stretches of the river are still virgin like the many rods you are keeping in your utility room.
It’s now clear sky and greenlight at the rivers. What will happen in the next three days, hopefully, will be an adventure of bewilderment and filled with the unexpected.
Butterflies in my stomach? You betcha! Fear of the unexpected? You betcha? Wanna make MFN anglers proud? Definitely!
Don’t cheer for me. Cheer for the nine other MFN guys who, with determination, made this expedition happen. Fortune favours the brave.
So strap on your seat belt and fly with us to the Land Below The Wind!
Next posting will be from my trusty Nokia 9300 and it maybe short, due to the GPRS connection. Over and out…
Vincent
