I normally surf fish with o.35mm mono lines on Abu 6500 reels when I need to cast further especially on clean beach (not snaggy).
But when I am spefically targeting bigger fish (like stingrays), I normally use 0.40mm/0.45mm mono lines on daiwa SL20/30 or shimano trinidad 12/14. However, distance will be hampered due to the thicker lines and bigger reels.
Just wondering, has anybody use say 0.26mm/0.28mm mono lines on Abu 5500 reels for really long range fishing from the beach?
Mind sharing the experiences and how productive is this technique, if I’m not wrong, this fishing style is frequently used in Italy and France.
Only problem with using the smaller diameter lines is that the breaking strain is so much lower - unless you use braid. The lower breaking strain, obviously means that you are limited with the pressure you can exert on the fish - which in the case of a good ray, can be considerable. If you are fishing a strip which has a lot of weed (Like Klang was!) you will lose a lot of gear.
I’m using .1mm Whiplash braid with a 30lb breaking strain. So far, the only problem I have had is if I forget to set the brakes on the reel!
Yeap, of course fising at Tg Harapan would not be an option to use such fishing technique. Not only the snag would you lose your rigs and sinkers, the ‘sampah’ too can snap your line right?..he he.
But…fishing on ‘clean’ beach with 0.28mm mono line and catching a 5kg fish would be bliss right?..I mean that’s the whole point in sport fishing lah actually! Using braid is best but pretty expensive especially if you happened to hit a snag.
By the way, done any surf fishing or field casting with our Singapore friends already?
Haven’t done any fishing yet, but was casting two weekends ago. Managed to average around the 180 mark, but hurt my back! Monday was in agony and had to have an MRI scan, followed by pain-killers, anti-inflammatory tablets and physiotherapy!!! On a boat this Friday - 7pm to 7am Saturday, so I’ll try my back out!!
Sorry to hear that you injured your back. Nice casting with you that. Do take care of your back and we shall have more session soon with the rest of the guys. Say ‘HI’ to your wifey ok

Are you guys actively casting still…but maybe not duirng this fasting month ya!
What’s the current craze on rods and reels in Singapore, don’t mind sharing?
My regards to Zahrain, Physlo and the rest of the gang…

Aznaff,
Sure I remember you. The DSG guys are still casting weekly before the Ramadan and will continue after the fasting month. Strangely, almost all of us have stop fishing and switch to casting for the past 2 months. Don’t know why though[:D]
Nothing has change much here. Most casters are using 2pc UK rod and no more 3pc at the moment. Only changes, I notice is some casters have adopted different casting style.
BTW, how is your side doing. Still active casting? So, when will be the next tourney be held. Understand from Meon, there might be a fishing trip and maybe we can join in the fun.
Zahrin, Edros, Meon, Hamid, Y, myself are still active casting. Just to keep us sweating over the weekend. Send my regards to the rest of the guys there.
We do use 10 to 12lbs line for more distant to target fishes at that range and often yield good results but if kena pull by the biggies juz standby kena spool la. There are anglers who pulled out pari successfully in excess of 10 kilos with 12lbs line but not common though. Unless if we really target for rays then we will use higher poundage like 20 ~ 25 lbs but line cap will be sacrified. Reel use normally Abu 55 and 65 for light lines. For higher poundage on surf reel varies to personal choices like Grandwave 20/30, Abus 7, Calcutta 700, Torium 16 and the list goes on. Hope this helps
