looking for team mates

After discussion with some friends in Taiwan, I decided to introduce the heavy duty rock fishing in Malaysia.

This fishing had never been executed here before. I am asking our forumers who is

  1. fishing enthusiatic
  2. determined to hook up and land a big sea fish from land
  3. able to join fishing trip once every two months.
  4. live in KL

to join me and fishing together.

the ultimate target is a 30kg + grouper or GT to be catch from land (rocks). We will frequently visit islands.

What to expect:

  1. Heavy Duty Rock Fishing (HDRF) required a lot of excercised. so be prepared.
  2. Camping on rocks for 2 nights on each trip.
  3. long waiting time while fishing.
  4. No IGFA records.
  5. the whole sets of gear will cost you 7-8,000 RM. each trip expect to share at least 600-700 RM
  6. weekly Teh Tarik session for discussion in PJ

so if you really think you are the one. please send me e-mail. We need max. 5 team mates only.

All the skill we will be learning from my friends in Taiwan. and they will come join our fishing for the ultimate targets.

Hi Pocketfreak,

Looks and sounds very interesting…but I guess I may not have the fitness level, endurance and the luxury of time to indulge in this type of rock fishing, real hardcore man!!!

Just wondering, any MILDER kind of rock fishing that you would want to do???

Well, brother,

I understand this HDRF style is not everyone’s cup of tea.

It is like hunting Kelah, you need to travel on 4X4, mounting climbing, swimming to reach the secret spot just to catch a Kelah.

Who said fishing is past time game?

If I do form a team you are welcome to tag along for your milder rock fishing, actually that is what I will do as well because fighting kg+ fish on ISO tackle is also a thrill.

But you may be “poisened” when you see any of our future team mates hook up and land a 30kg+ fish. hehe…[:)]

Ah, but first you have to find your fish! Dunno where you will find real deep water around Malaysia though.

The guys around Hong Kong do the same stuff, boat out to the small rocky islands, stay out there for 1 or 2 nights and come back in. They just use normal ISO gear or just normal surf fishing gear as the biggest fish will be 3 or 4Kg if they are really lucky. Unfortunately, Hong Kong is really over-fished with netters around every piece of land and greedy fishoes who keep even the smallest of fish without any thought of conservation.

I wish you luck though and hope you do find your big fish!

Thanks!

I realized it is not an easy task. like you said I am not even sure if there are 30+kg fish in Malaysia waiting to be catch on land base.

But this is why it is facinating to me, if I want a “surecatch” I can just travel back to Taiwan and fishing giant grouper in the paypond. it is for sure I will hook up a giant grouper and land it.

I know there are very rare ppl like me wanna “chase the ghost”. that is why I must stated whoever “interested” in HDRF should know what to expect.

Wish you all the luck, brother! I haven’t heard fishos going for rock fishing in Malaysia because we don’t know where the deep waters are. Most of the nearby islands with rocks are not the type that we see on your link and the fish in Malaysia are already over-fished by the trawlers. Well, perhaps you can get one or two big ones but the rewards would not commensurate with the effort, time and expenses put in.

If anyone has been doing rock-fishing and got giants we would already see them reported in the fishing magazines.

Thanks, bro Jam

actually it is not difficult to allocate the spot. I am planning to visit Langkawi myself and what I will do is first to ask a boatman to take me just circulate the islands. the tatic we usually will do is to tight 10 lb line on a stone then just cast it near the bank of island, then the boat will be drifting away slowly and when I retrieve the stone I know the depth of that particular spot, if the stone got snagged I know for sure the botton is rocky, so I snap the 10 lb line and tight another stone to test other spots.

Taiwan was (and probably still) over fishing but we still able to do the HDRF, I think mainly because the giant grouper find their hideout and hardly you found them caught by net.

I admit it is the temptation to catch a big fish near the bank, it could be a virgin paradise for HRDF, who knows? one of my very closed friend told me he had seen seen giant grouper hiding under the whole near a small island. I guess that is why I keep a high hope on it.

I wish to at least find two teammates if not 5, cause fishing on rock overnight is not child’s play and we definitely need to take care of each others.

For many yr ago. I went to stay in Langkawi Datai hotel and did decent reef fishing survey around that area. The right conner of the beach ,There is an Island have reef base form bridge link to the Main Island when low tide you can walk across reach the island. Around there always have steep drop off. So I think , you can try something there.

Thanks for your information brother. will definitely go try it [:)]

Pocketfreak,

I’ve also heard of stories of people casting jigs and poppers from Tukun Perak and spending nights on the rock to catch huge trevally and stuff.

Not sure if they did bottom fishing.

Anyway, heard that although the bitings were great but many trophy fishes were lost due to the sharp rocks cutting their lines while trying to beach them.

Don’t know how true this is actually?

It is possible to catch GT on Tukun Perak for sure.

The reason is simple - if ppl can catch GT on boat near Tukun Perak, that means the place should be the hunting field for GT. I think the water there is pretty deep - probably a drop off more than 50 M near the island.

If you want to do bottom fishing for these giants, you can not use normal leader line - be it wire leader or mono. 99% chance will be the sharp rocks will cut the line loose for the fish. in Taiwan we use short, 500lb wire leader connected to Kevlar wire (1000 lb). that will do the trick

Bro PF, There are a few islands in Karang Luas where there are sudden drop in depth. Had read Rod & Line article on that area a few years back .If you required our regular boatman contact , I can revert to you. Regards
