lures... best application??... advise needed...

hey guys these are lures that i recently acquired… i have no idea wen to use which and for wat… just bought them cos i want to start lure fishing and basically felt the itch to buy… could all the sifu’s help me out by telling me where and when its best to use these?.. any feedback is appreciated…

abu garcia tormenter - 9g/70mm/Floating

yo-zuri crystal minnow - 10g/90mm/sinking

no idea wat brand - 9g/80mm/floating

lucky craft hagane 70ps - 20g/sinking

lucku craft cranking shad tango 55s - 7.2g

yo-zuri arms crank md - 10g/60mm

some plastic frogs

Wah very rishhh ah u bro… one time buy so many lures ahh hhahhaha

tormentor not bad lure, shallow runner tho i dont use em much, the action is quite wide side to side movement… actually didnt get fish with it since i only have one, the old ones for collection purpose lol

the crystal is a fantastic lure tho yours is sinking, my floating version works amazingly so i think this wouldnt be any worst… since u can vary ur depth by its sinking ability… good action

no brand top water walk the dog lure… for surface walk the dog but no comments on its action since never try one before

LC brand i dunno, not a fan. other sifu can enlighten u there

yozuri crank… nice lure… tho i never caught anything significant with it before but it;s action always get me excited. deep runner

plastic frog usually work best at weedy area since its wat they are made for… walking on the surface without tangling… action wise no comment, never use this brand before but looks good for snakehead

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

wow. nice lures. got from the sea tackle sale?
i like the frog closest to the camera. hope they still got. how much u got it for?
wanna sell? hahahaha…

anyway,
i’m not an expert, but fishing with lures is what i’ve been doing most of the time since late last year. still kinda noob sometimes, but i got good sifus n coaches. with their tips n teachings, plus my own exprience… lets do some late-night lure talk!

hmmm… u got some very nice lures there. for someone who just recently started lure fishing, that’s quite some pricey lures (if without SEA tackle sale la).
about 3-4 years back, i started with my first lures, all below RM5 each. hehe. also caught fish! (but mostly used a few times then cacat. dunno why.)

bout those lures u posted up here, i only used the tormentor n the arms crank before.
tormentors are great lures to me, especially for the price u pay. good action, nice finishing, good for many fishing conditions, n can cast a good distance.
the arms crank.. i love it too. nice tight wobble. maybe can try some juvenile-toman fishing with it. mine has caught me many tomans over the past few months. (then again, when toman frenzy, wiggle your finger by the side of the boat also like 10 of them will come n hentam.) again, another very reasonably priced lure.

most of the lures u’ve chosen have nice, natural colours. many ppl say that it doesn’t matter coz fish r supposedly colour blind, but i try to use lure with colours that resemble natural prey of my target fish anyway… (maybe just for my sake… but i guess it just increases my confidence in using them… which i think is a good thing.)

when to use which for what?
difficult to answer just like that. i think there r so many things to consider when it comes to choosing a lure from your box n putting it onto your snap to be casted out. some stuff like: target fish, water depth, size n weight of lure, action of lure, diving depth of lure, natural prey of the predatory fish in the area, brightness of sunlight, time of the day, sometimes even wind direction.

all i can say at the end of the day is… the more u fish with lures, the more u’ll understand them. i’m still learning. only just begun (just 1% maybe), but i’m learning fast by fishing with the right ppl (ppl who are passionate bout lure fishing). if u wanna take up lure fishing, fish with ppl who really love it n know their stuff.

hey guys thanks for the quick replies… actually i got the tormentor and the cap ayam lure for ten bucks each at a small tackle shop some time ago… hands itchy… the yo-zuri’s were only 10 bucks each and the LC’s 20 bucks each at the Sea Tackle sale… the plastic frogs were 1 ringgit each at the same sale;)… so yea not that rich la… just very hard to resist after seeing ppl rush to grab them lol… now i really want to start lure fishing but i have no clue where to go location wise or how to work a lure… all my fishing buddies are bottom kaki’s… the one guy who does lure fishing travels to Air Kuning which is a bit too far for a broke student like myself… guess i gotta just find some water and start casting:)

Warr..all da sifus above lures actually touch water n caught something arr..my lures dun talk laa..sometime im so disappointed wif them i haf to cast them in my swimming to see how they actually work!! Sigh…

To fish or not to fish, tat is da question

i’m no sifu leh…

for topwater…froggie and pencil..walk em a dog hehe..or pause and twitch in between
for cranks(arms and LC)…try crankin’ deadly slow in the shallow..they kick up the dirts on the bottom…
for sinkking minnow..count 1 sec 1 foot…retrieve and jerk…sweep your rod and crank in either on long sweep or short..or on combination of both heheh..

just a joke though…ignorance is appreciated…

just use them at any pond u encounter or fish with ur bottom kakis… you’ll never know wat you’ll get furthermore u might get those bottom kaki’s converted hehehehe

just read on others comment and see which water which lure suits better and most importantly, put some confindence in the lure u use…

lastly good luck and enjoy luring!

I have the same problem here.. Have a Storm deep diver and crank, Abu Island, Hinomiya pencil River2sea popper with a few cap ayam lures. Never caught anything with them. So hard to use, at least to me la.. Haha. Reading all the sifus catches with lures just make me salivate. Hehe. Maybe the place i fish is under alot of pressure, or wrong technique which i think is the main problem.

Like most things in fishing, a lot starts with having confidence. I have a suggestion that might work.

If we look at the ponds / pay ponds, a lot of fishos use what they call udang kopek i.e prawns with their heads, tails and shell removed, and a single hook through either the front or the tail end.

In many ways this is like using a lure ! - does the udang kopek resemble anything that the fish have chomped on before ?

Get some of these for practice to get confidence - you will see many people landing fish this way. Try to imitate what they are doing - and practice, practice, practice.

The progression to hard bodies, soft plastics, spoons and spinners then becomes easier once you have acquired the technique of presenting the " lure " the correct way. It is in the technique, and how you present the " lure "

When you move on, the soft plastics with scent will be the closest - they tend to encourage a fish to hang on longer. The hard bodied / spinners call for you to strike the moment you get a bite.

Take it step, by step - udang kopek is comparatively cheap and easily available, grow in skill and confidence, and then go to all the lures we see hanging on the walls !

And Oh YES ! … read carefully what Marlin and others have contributed - you will find very good advice given here.

Best of luck ! [:p][:p][:p]

Errr…why u fellas always say “Cap Ayam” ah?..cannot “Cap Itik” meh?[:p]</font id=“purple”>

Mike,
Thanks for the udang kopek tips. First time hearing that. Prawns from the supermarket should be fine? And my closest encounter to lure fishing is putting 2 small round weights to the leader attached to the hook. Caught dozens of cichlids. Haha. Anyway, will try your udang kopek![;)]

If going to the supermarket - I use the yellow ones for salt water, and the white ones for fresh.

If going to the payponds - just ask the guy selling the prawns for the dead ones - normally cheaper than the live ones.

The trick is to " mount " them on the hook so that they lie straight - Texas rig style.

I also like to use the cheap Relix " Worm 5743 " hooks ( size 1 or 1/0 )- these are offset so that the " lure " is less likely to spiral.

Another finishing touch is to buy some soft lumo beads - these can be slipped over the knot to tidy up things.

Best of luck ! [:)]

lol john small round weights as bait huh?.. interesting…

mike… never tried casting with udang kopek but at the freshwater paypond that i frequent we practise the same type of casting… except there we do it with bread or anything that resembles bread… works well for pacu’s… difference with that and actual lures is how to retrieve an actual lure…

" we do it with bread or anything that resembles bread… works well for pacu’s… difference with that and actual lures is how to retrieve an actual lure.."

Using bread ( especially Gardenia ) can be effective on many occasions, but the technique employed will be, as you have pointed out, quite different when compared to hard bodied and soft plastic luring.

I also normally use the " curry puff " variant - soaked soft pellets in the center, and a square of bread folded over and pinched together at the edges like in the making of curry puffs - but this is more so that I can get my bait out to where the fished are feeding - and this not not " luring " like what the guys like TJS are doing.

Have a look at all the excellent articles that the guys have contributed - and recognize that the luring that they do has limitless ways with how to display your lure.

e.g. " bottom bouncing " is one of my favorites - you can’t do this successfully if you only stay with bread.

Practice makes perfect - but the point I am trying to make is not to rush out and break your bank account with expensive lures - it is not necessary because there are cheaper ways to pick up the experience and confidence first.

After that - go and splurge - but just be mindful - other people are catching just as much ( if not more ) on " lures " that cost a fraction of those mega priced ones hanging on the racks.

Are they having as much fun ? - I don’t really know - but it is always up to each of us to have our fun the way we want it.[:)]

to me very simple, buying something u r comfortable..of course more xpensif lures wud better finishin n quality n budget for it..u cant buy now so buy later lorr..as if tackle shop is goin to close down soon or wat..

But also at the same time i will tell myself after spending some money, "Im stoopid but im HAPPY!"Best of all u can make yur friend yelous abt yur lures. Like most recently happened my friend mentioned he wan to purchase a small tackle box for mobility n lightweight..invited me to see his lures n i was like WTF; u hardly haf lures man..Then I showed him mine; u can see his face he was so cheese off!! from topwater, to popper to walker, chichida, spinner, divers, minnow, bomb, shallow runners, SPs, weedless frog, buzzbait, spoons, micro lures, kura kura all pack tightly into a small tackle box…

To fish or not to fish, tat is da question
