Magnetic Braking Reels

Hi All,

I would generally group magnetic braking multiplier reels for distance casting as follows:-

1)Slidy system-Abu Mag Elite/Abu Sport Mag to some extent.
2)Knobby system-Mostly customised/Penn 525 Tourna Mag (knobby)
3)Centre Mag-Mostly customised

I currently use the centre mags mostly (Chris Macy system/Zahrain’s custom made)for my sports casting, like it very much.

The question is whether there is really a sinificant difference in one magnetic system over the other two systems?

Or whether a competent caster can easily cast the same marked distance with any of the magnetic system (assuming that all the reels are well balanced/tuned for sports casting)?

What do you guys think…

turning the knobb or sliding the mag wont give u much extra metre !!!

so it’is not about turning off the mag to increase distance, but it’s about how you going to control the “Speed Of The Spool”…or maybe “Forced The Spool to Speed Up”…

as a story when i and Ian@The Gila Mat Salleh were fishing at Peng.Balak, he give me chance to cast with his reel…well it was the first cast, with his reel, his rod,and with what i dont familiar…

after that heard someone said '****" and it was Ian, anger becoz i nearly empty out his spool while he only able to run off the line nearly half only…

Aznaff,
Why don’t you experiment. You can be the Mythbuster of distance casting.
I’m sure Ian agrees with me(at least Bro Onn should)
till later…

trust in god but tie up your camel or loosen the drag.

en rahim,

I’ve always been experimenting with it and currently my preference is the centre mag system although I found that it was quite ackward to use it initially. I am not making any conclusive decision yet but it works for me now.

The slidy is easier to maneuver but I find that minimising the magnetic braking to gain more distance is difficult to manage!

As for the knobby system, I’ve not really ventured into its potential because I don’t really have a good system installed in my reel yet. The one that I have still needs some fine tuning.

However, from my observation many if not all world class distance casters use either centre or knobby magnetic system on their reels.

en rahim/BroOnn,

Mythbuster Findings:

Fact

  • Compose cast + power-up + tuned reel = good distance + free air tin + mee goreng!

Fact

  • Erratic cast + power-up + tuned reel = bad distance + must pay for air tin + mee goreng!

Myth

  • No placing caster vs Malaysia No.2/3 caster = no need to give handicap (where can..he he)!
