making own fly rod

Read many sites that teach how to make own fly rods. All refer to Tonkin cane or bamboo from china as their raw material for the rod. Anyone tried using our local bamboo esp the buluh pancing ikan type? Just curious.

i have tried one with common bamboo. but i do not know if its up to par or a bit lower. the bending strength is nice but it was broke due due to a small catfish(keli) about 2kg.mebe its my fault in building it.waste half a year of time making it. sorry i have no pic of it.mebe when i one to build other one i shall snap a pic.

Bro Fisher…itu lobang in the middle of your bamboo blank, won’t it weaken the rod?

The bamboo strips are binded temporary for heat treatment process.
It has not been plan and that is why you see some gaps or lubang in the middle. But when it’s finished, you won’t see any gaps in between the bamboo strips..
