Message from Dr Ling ( CCI )

Congatulations guys for setting up the web study so fast. Now to the nitty gritty.
By stipulations you can use a rod and line up to max 7wt and a leader setup of
not less than7.5feet in length. I would use a setup on the heavier side I.e 6 or 7 wt medium action rod
and a wt toward line.
I suggest we have 2 practice sessions a month say first and third Tuesday starting off
in November.
More importantly is to dissect and learn the 5 essentials and Bruce six
step method to analyze your cast.

Rod Tip,
Ling

Reply From Babyjojo,

Hey Fly Anglers,

I totally agree with what Dr. Ling has suggested. Would be good to learn and know for those who will be taking part of the CCI test and also to those who keen to learn for their future benefits & casting.

Here I would like to share a website with you guys that are interested for the CCI test. This site is dedicated to the enhancement of fly casting instruction, and is specifically for those interested in becoming certified Federation of Fly Fishers™ (FFF) fly casting instructors. It teaches you every casting of the practical test with a video demonstrating the individual cast. It also have questions that the examiner might ask you and also teaches what the answer is. It is more for the CCI and MCI. You can also practice within your friends.

Happy Learning & Casting.

Post by Peter Hayes ( MCI / Australia )

Well done guys . It is a credit to you all. Your passion and enthusiasm is infectious and one day you will all look back and be very proud of what you all achieved in 2010 - 2011. I am only too pleased to help in any way I can. I personally think there are two major things that those interested in doing the CCI need to get down Pat.

  1. Write down an explanation for all the explain and demonstrate ( teaching ability) casts. Do this in your own way. Don’t just copy someone else’s answer.
Ie: if you are asked to explain casting into a head wind.
a, The issues: the main issue is that the line wont fully unroll because of the oncoming wind
b, Be happy to cast shorter distances ( the fish will likely find it harder to see you because of waves so it is ok to get closer )
c, Shorten your leader and beef up the butt end.
d, try less wind resistant flies if possible
    Casting considerations
e, Tighten loops by focusing on SLP of rod tip
f, precise trajectory for target point with 180 degree rule in place
g, increase line speed by 1. driving the rod forward harder which will increase the load and the depth of bend so you will need to open up the forward arc ( drift to do this) and 2. Add a haul ( either a single haul on the front delivery only or a double haul )
h, if the leader is just about to turn over and there is just a little energy left in the cast you can ‘check’ the cast with your line hand and force the final turnover. Some call this a third haul
i, Some say casting low to the water gets below the wind but I believe this is a myth. You find out why I think this
j, Casts like a Moulson wind cast can be useful.

After that explanation, I as an examiner, would be left without a single question to ask you. About all that I could do is to ask you to turn into the wind and demonstrate each of those points to me.

You need to cover each of these questions in your own words that you are familiar with and comfortable with to that degree of thoroughness. Make sure you leave the examiner without a single question he can ask you. Period !

Send your written answers to any one of the Australian MCI’s for their marking and returning to you.

Secondly, Practice casting watching both the back and forward casts until you have both super smooth rod loading and good tip control.
Symmetrical loops both back and front. Good definition between speed changes and loop heights. Good tempo as standard. No tailing loops.

Go to it and good luck. You all deserve success.

Peter Hayes

Can someone give a broader ideas on what will be covered in the CCI test. Just the general outline for everyone to study and practice. Cos there are so many things to digest.

Casting Sessions - CCI Performance Test

Hi everyone,

We will need to get these sessions on the way as soon as possible.
Doc Ling and Ben Foo suggests we meet 8.30pm every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month with the first session on 2 November.
The venue suggested is MBSA field next to Masjid Shah Alam.

To all MF Rodders and other flyfishos who are keen to join us for these sessions, we welcome you all with open arms…
To those attending, please use a rod which you fish, cast or practice the most with. Please have appropriate floating line, leaders and a piece of yarn or practice fly. We have tape measures and markers for all. You can read the post on FLY GEAR SET UP if unsure.

We’ll begin with the first 2 or 3 performances on LOOPS for Controlled Casts for the first session.

Thanks and see you there.
