Marlin's TAKE YOUR TRASH HOME Thread

Drive 6 hours to get to your boat, steam another 5 hours to get to the most remote fishing location in the lake and here’s what you find when you get there.

Tasik Kenyir extreme southern part inside Taman Negara. Disgraceful! Wonder how long this little corner will stay clean after we cleaned up? Probably until the very next houseboat full of anglers parks there.

sigh.. when will Malaysian anglers learn to keep their fishing spot clean?
Here we see a very caring Mat salleh clearing up trash left behind by anglers in a our own country. Malaysian anglers who left those trash behind ought to be ashamed of themselves. Come on Malaysian anglers please have a heart and be more responsible in keeping our own environment clean at all times, it seems that this campaign will definitely take a long time to knock some sense into those litter bugs anglers. Keep up the good work Marlin, I 100% SUPPORT YOUR CAMPAIGN.
I sincerely hope that there will be more pictures like yours to be recorded in camera and posted here.

Marlin thanks for cleaning up! Keep up the good work its good to have anglers like you!

You wake in the early hours full of anticipation. You drive through the night. Arriving at the waterside, you suck in the fresh clean air. Dawn is breaking. In the dim morning light, you can see others have been before you.

This really sucks! I’m fed up with this sort of crap everywhere I fish in Malaysia!

Hi guys,

I am driven to put in a few opinions here.

Firstly: the Watanabe Program by Rod&line. It was a great one. It was an early trigger for anglers to change their mindset and habits. Taking trash home regardless of whether it’s theirs or others’.

My little part in the program was contributing to the slogan: “No Mess, No Less!” (did I get it right, CJ?) printed on the T-Shirt.

Yes, it was a Japanese angler named Watanabe who was the quiet model. Editor Fong noticed that he quietly collected all the rubbish from the boat and carried it home. That triggered Fong to start the program.

It’s been some 10 years now. The rubbish is definitely back. I can speak on behalf of the KAGUM activity of River CleanUp. When we go to the same picnic rivers, we see the same rubbish everytime. So, is the clean up futile? No. The main agenda is to be role models, to quietly pick up the rubbish, right in front of the people who throw them. Sooner or later, we believe others will follow.

Some Sabahans are now doing river cleanup. Cleanups in longkangland are in the plans, a little bird tels me. I met these groups in Tmn Tun Dr Ismail and Batu area who are cleaning their adopted rivers.

Whether this is happening due to the example set by KAGUM or not, doesnt really matter to us. What matters, is that the action happens!

So, we MFN forumers need to go beyond mere words. Let’s motvate each other. Catch ouselves doing it right, post the pics here in this thread. Most importantly, do not give up when we see a mountain of rubbish!!!

Cleanup Australia originated from one man who decided to quietly clean up his area. Now, millions are involved on their nation-wide cleanup day.

We can make it happen too.

><<((:>

Agree!

Hi everyone,
This is sure one very intresting MFN thread. This is what I called “enviroment friendly threads”.
In this thread we see caring and considerate anglers putting some effort to get rid “abit” of trash out of the “big rubbish dump of Malaysia”. Sorry to say that, we Malaysians seems to take a long time to learn (Except for a few kind soul setting the example).

I agree with JB comments on the KAGUM activity of River CleanUp.
" When we go to the same picnic rivers, we see the same rubbish everytime. So, is the clean up futile? No. THE MAIN AGENNDA IS TO BE ROLE MODELS,TO QUIETLY PICK UP THE RUBBISH, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE PEOPLE WHO THROW THEM. SOONER OR LATER, WE BELIEVE OTHERS WILL FOLLOW".

I truly believe this is one of the best example !!!
By the way, how many of you are going to support the comming KAGUM’s river clean up???

I like to contribute some ideas here for everyone kind consideration.

Sometime in the early eighties, I have the previlage to join a river clean up orginaized as a Church family’s activitie. It a clean up of a river deep inside the old Ampang road. Many of the volunteers are Mat Selleh people. They set good example for us Malaysians. It’s a first time exprience for those local Church members. They said it’s was a success to instill awareness to our youth, but for some reason the second clean up never happen. Only Gods know why!! When I learn from here that Watanabe came and show his “Example”. I too feel guilty and ashame for most Malaysian are not doing much for their own parks, lakes and rivers.

Having said this, I strongly believe if we first set the example and do what KAGUM is doing.
We should keep records of all clean up activities (and even take pictures for the record).
With these example, we then approach Churches and ask them to organize clean up OR ask them to join us for clean ups. Churches have very large youth movement that we can use to instill this awareness to the younger generation to set example. Family activities is also good. I strongly believe this will work.

Another success that I notice is, when PeMM organize a fishing compeatition with MPPJ at Taman Jaya, I remember it was may 31 2008, I did not catch any fish BUT I learn a good lesson when someone from PeMM announce that they are giving out “goodies bags” for any children that pick up a bag of aprox. 1/2 kg of rubbish. With that I saw childrens running around picking up rubbish, also parents helping them. Seeing this happening is well worth my paying RM30 without catching a fish during the compeatition that day.
I know that in the above example, we are giving them a carrot to make them do some clean up.
But atleast they learn good value of cleaning up.
It we can make people “proud” of setting the good example, every parents are proud of their own children and they will teach their childrens to be “proud” to keep our parks, lakes and our rivers clean. Make them “proud” of doing it, That is the all the “carrot” they need.

It take only one to show the example and many will follow the good deed !!

Marlin and JB, keep up the good work, the rest will follow !!

Regards
David

Marlin,

You have the right to be angry on this issue, i feel the same way too. Very unfortunate that a lot of Malaysians have no inkling why it is important to keep the environment clean. The problem does not lie with anglers only, but with the rest of the society. It came about because of the misconception that there will always be somebody that will clean the trash or that that they paid the tax or asessement, so why bother? let the Alam Flora or Majlis Perbandaran take care of the trash. This is wrong as they cannot be everywhere!

I have my share of disgusting experience witnessing the tekongs throwing garbage into the sea, when confronted they would say" relax! the sea is big!". I usually stop taking this kind of tekong.

The other day i was driving behind a kanchil which was driven by two ladies very slowly, all of the sudden a can of Coke flew out of the window and almost hit my car! I horned but they couldnt be bothered! They rather littered the street than their car! I am sure other people also experienced this kind of thing, ciggarrette butts etc.

The root of the whole thing lies in the education system and parents which failed to incalculate the civic mindedness and love for the environment. I always told my kids, if you cant find a rubbish bins, keep the chocolate rapper in your pockets until you reach home, otherwise no chocolate the next time.

So, Marlin, we need to keep this thread alive and remind everybody to do their part to keep the environment clean.

We cant let those morons win!
