Materials & Tools

Will really be helpful if we could come up wif a quick start-up list of materials/tools/gizmos/etc to delve into this art of lure making. As the list grows, we should be able to then categorically group these items into relevant categories to make it easier for lure making wannabees [:p] (dat includes me hehe…) to give it a go… i prefer not to be caught unprepared, which might possibly be by the time u managed to get hold of things ur enthusiasm oredi fizzle down [xx(] hehe… let me start 1st & maybe sifus/frenz can add up later & organize 'em into an easy to follow guide of some sort…

Wood - balsa/jelutong (thickness?)
wires - brass/stainless steel (diameter?)
weight - lead sinker (weight g?)
paint - primer/coloration/clear coat/acrylic (any color/brand?)
lure coating - clear epoxy/lacquer
glue - waterproof glue/gam gajah [;)]
cutting board
paper & pencil
sand paper (spec. ?)
knife - cutting/carving knife
saw - handsaw
lure lip - polycarbonate/acrylic
split rings
treble hooks

this is messy but if we cud pool our list together & make a ‘must-have’ list, then this will definitely make life easier for most of us [:)]

cheers

Of course, by then the racun will go straight to the heart! hehehehe[:D]

Binjal, as u get along u’ll find u collect more tools along the way or make ur own custom tool to feed ur needs.

Lets see if I can get u guys started for hardbait:
Cutting tools (in order of necessity):

  • Sharp carving kinife (snap blade works very well too)
  • Coping/Fret Saw
  • Half round file
Material:
  • Wood - actually any wood depending on what u want to make. Jelutong is the best all round wood here. Balsa is imported so there’s a price issue
  • Polycarbonate sheet 1.6mm for lips, other include .5mm Stainless Steel sheet (of course this will vary with whatsize of lure u wanna make.
  • Hard SS leader wire, gauge size 18-20. What I usually use.
  • Paint Anchor or Krystal brand Rattle can, advice is to stick to ONE brand, mixing of brands can sometimes give u unexpected results.
There is no hard and fast rules on what to use, depending on ur budget and working style, just start simple and progress from there. If I give u a list of all the tool I have at this stage, u might think I operate a woodworking workshop. At the other end of lure making even a CNC machine is pretty desirable LOL

binjai, elakkan gam cap gajah, ia tak sekuat epoxy. better guna epoxy. FT bgtau kena ada 2 jenis epoxy, satu yang 30 minit (recommend brand devcon - 2 ton epoxy) untuk coating dan satu lagi 5 min epoxy utk gam lip, wire dan sebagainya. kedua2 epoxy tu kaler clear. untuk permulaan aku cuma beli handsaw, kertas pasir 400 dan epoxy devcon je. carving knife aku cuma guna pisau biasa yang bleh tukar blade tu je, cuma ia cepat tumpul bila dah carve sebijik lure terus kena tukar blade. material guna barang terpakai, he he…

I use
a band saw to rough cut my lures
a router to finish shape my lures
.030 inch diamater stainless steel wire
5 min epoxy to glue my lures together
Water based acrylic paints
30 minute Devcon for top coating.

sifus, what is water based acrylic paint look like? can upload some pic maa? where can i get this paint, and at what price? i found it is hard to use can spray, cannot control the burst of the paint unless if a single colour of lure is to be made. if the acrylic paint is easier to used?

i started off with some basic tool like a saw, snap blade, drill, plier, expoxy and spray paint, most of the stuff u have in yr handyman tools box.
and as the interest progress so as the need to make better lure and easier way to make it - actually i dont think there is any easy way to make lure :-((
u will eventually start to aquire more and more tools and gadget :-))
but a word of caution, once the buying starts, there is no turning back
my lure making things hv already spill over from my store room and there r still things i need to get my hands on hehehe

Using acrylic paint means getting an airbrush, they don’t really come in spray cans, so for a start try to master spray-can painting, it will be much cheaper to start. Acrylic paints (water base) can found in artist supply shops.

To tackle spray can painting u have techniques like masking, stenciling etc so u can paint finer details that is possible with a direct spray. Also spray from a distance of 4-6" so what hits ur lure is the finer spray and not the thick burst. Practice on some scraps so u know how to control the spray. It’s one smooth sweep of the can over the lure & not spray direct on lure in spurts.

Search the web for “airbrush tecnique”. There’s alot of info on it and u can adapt the techniques used to spray can as well.

lapala…

got da hang of spraying methink lar, but got it only after a few times… now wud like to acquire most items 1st b4 getting meself started into luremaking. btw, u mentioned that u used car primer to make an initial coat. aint dat expensive? care to suggest alternative paint (?) or rattle spraycan will do?

cheers

ooo, i thought acrylic paint is like a special type of water colour. he he… air brush is expensive maaa…
lapala, is there any objection to used ordinary water colour or poster colour? it is not waterproof but it would after epoxy coating, rite? i thought the only problem is that such paint doesnt have choices of sparkling colour.

Binjai, any good quality primer paint will work. I’m not sure what is available to you but here in the U.S. we have a number of paint options. Some even dip their lures into latex house primer (Brand name of Kilz)and rotate them until the paint cures.

rusabekeng, I don’t think the water colour is a good idea. you proably will have adhesion problems with your top coating. I also use some spray cans for some of my painting. when I need a fine mist cover i hold my bait at arms length and quickly pass my lure through the paint mist. Do this outside or over a drop cloth to protect your house from overspray.

RB,
go get yrself a can of spray paint, maybe 2,
spray yr lure, clear coat it n u would prefer the finished lure
i started off buying only few color, ie. white, yellow, green
but now, got quiet a few canssss
just like buying most fishing tackles hehehe

Binjai,
the automative primer is not that expensive lar
1 litre can for around RM20
can last u a long, long time

Fun 2 Fish, Fish 4 Fun

FatRap…

any particular brand of auto primer in mind? white yes? will those cheap white gloss paint do?

dang… my fav hw store only got da white devcon expoy lar… da guy oso blur2 when ask him 'bout the clear devcon epoxy one hehe…

cheers

Binjai,

most brand will do, prefer white - it brings out the colour u gonna spray next
we want primer, not paint

Devcon clear in 30min is kinda difficult to find in KL/PJ, i’m hving trouble also

Fun 2 Fish, Fish 4 Fun

i use a manual band saw to raw cut my lures
snap blade to shape and detail the lure
0.4mm and 0.8mm stainless steel wire for my baits(i even used 1mm wire on a couple of jobs)
5 min epozy to glue my baits
propionate to base coat the lures
and 30min devcon(from master LP) and envirotex lite(this cures in a really long, anoing time)

who know which shop selling devcon brand epoixy around kl… manyak susalah mau cari ini barang wo…

kedai hardware musti ada maaaa… aku beli kat kedai hardware pandan jaya.

if that hardware store don’t sell devcon, then boycott his shop heheheehheheehh

I do still have about 30 packets of Devcon 30 min so if any of u really can’t find them I can spare a few. PM or email me. Or if u wanna buy in box of 12, I can order them from shop here. Distributer is in Butterworth I think, but I got it thru a local hardware store.
