Caught this 13kg Shovelnose Shark early this morning. It took my big tamban bait and fought a hard battle with me. Upon this catches, I had almost completed caught every species of fishes that are found in Singapore shoreline with my own surf rod n line. Enjoy…

Thanks.
Yup, this shark fight very strongly when hook. It take long n deep running during initial hookup. After that it will take shorter run and twist n turn direction often. When it surface, it will shake it head vigourously trying to unhook. If has strong light around during night time, it will dive down again strongly. So keep all light away if U know U have hookup a shovelnose ray. But it also depend on where u hookup this fish.
If at beach, just maintain a smooth drag and a tension line n let the fish run until it tired out before U bring it close in.
But if at a jetty or kelong, U must becareful as it might run under n cause your line to break or entangle. Best is keep your line as short as possible when the fish is near structure so that U can react in time to steer it away.
Gaffing it also must becareful..If at beach just gaff it and pull it in slowly. But at jetty, if the fish is big must used two gaff to play safe. This fish is very powerful in it body strenght by twist n turn. It can dislodge a gaff by doing that.
When landed, keep your leg away from it initially as a whack by it tail is no joking.

Thanks for the enlightening input, by the way where was this fish caught, I mean jetty of beach proper?.. and also the tackle used, line poundage and all??
Cannot imagine hooking one! Normally see the pictures of catches in Namibian beaches.
It was caught at the east coast bedok jetty. Surf rod is a 10ft Penn power stick converted for multiplyier used. Reel is the old Penn 500L Jigmaster. Line is 30lbs mono joint with 40lbs shock leader. Rig is a self tie long snood bottom feeder n a size 4/0 short shank stainless steel hook with wire trace. Bait is a whole big tamban.
Yup, this fish is quite rare here. One year only one or two get hookup. Mostly ended up with line break if the angler is not skillfull enough to handle it.
