Mixing a 7/8wt reel to a 5/6 rod

I want more backing than what my 5/6wt reel can accomodate. Would there be a problem if I use a 7/8wt reel, fill it with 20lb dacron, and put a 6wt fly line? Would it make the setup unbalanced? Too heavy?

Why want so much backing.100 metre also enough what.my 5 wt i put 50 to 60 metre for Pacu at pond fishing also enough.maybe u go for bonefish aah .

Im targeting milkfish, threadfin, ladyfish, and if lucky, trevally. I understand these fish tend to run hard when hooked, so having more backing might be useful.

Also, I’ll be casting from a small boat out in the bay

My strategy is that I use light tackle and equipment for small(er) fish and go first into longer backing from weight 6 and up. I fish mainly catch and release so I don’t fish light tackle for big fish or strong fish. Not that the equipment cannot handle it but more because when you release an exhausted fish or fish that has been played very long the chances that the fish will die are much higher too.
In my way of fishing I never see or saw any need for more then 100meter backing for weight 3-5 reels. I use 150 meter on my weight 6 reels for grilse & char species and there never was any need to use more. I always use 200meter of backing from weight 7 and higher.
I use mostly 7 weight when fish for big and strong fish. (saltwater or salmon, lake trout and seatrout)
I prefer to fish as light as possible to catch certain fish but for example using weight 4 or 5 rods for salmon or seatrout will destroy or kill the fish because the play simply would be far too long!

With saltwater fishing i use lots of backing 200-400 meter backing and using rods from 7-10weight

If u going for sea fishes like Travelli then must use bigger reel with 200 metre backing as this is real fighthers…sorry i don’t think small reels can cope the strenght of a big fish like travelli

Thanks for sharing your experiences, guys!
