More fish in Singapore?

Hi,

I was reading Ipohmali’s report and also comments that there are more fish in Singapore and I do agree that it’s easier to catch fish in Singapore. Think it’s a combination of low commercial fishing pressure, less polluted environment and enforcement of fishing restrictions. As for catch and release, it’s probably the same as malaysia, some anglers catch and eat, some anglers catch and release. Malaysia still has great fishing locations and definitely more great native species but it’s being ruined by indiscriminate development and unrestricted legal and illegal commercial fishing. Sigh…

I don’t fish very often in Singapore but here’s a selection of fish caught within 15 mins of the city centre and by fishing for less than 2 hours. Don’t think we can do this in Malaysia, except maybe on the east coast or east malaysia. Sigh…

Kram,
I agree with you, there are more fish in Sing. If Malaysian do nothing about the illegal trawlers, catching fish from shore would be the historical activities. By the year 2020, Penang anglers would only dream of the time they enjoy fishing gelama from shore . What will be our hobby when we retire? We work hard all our life, we deserve to enjoy fishing and more fishing when we retire. So plan for your retire, and do something.

Wow,

PB, markerel and golden travelly catch together in less than 2 hours! Fantastic, only in singapura! Not the numbers that counts but the species!!!

I’m just a college student and only have 10 years of fishing experience, so must beri tunjuk ajar!

hey… its already happening in mlk!
from shore if can get gelama can strike number already! [:D]

i used to remember non stop hookups of gelama when i was 12yo…

Hey guys,

Im new and living here and i’m from Sg.

Take my words for it, the grapes are definitely sweeter here.

Cheers[:D][8D]

Hi Buddy,

Thanks for the update and warnings. You obviously have a lot of experience fishing in Singapore.

I am quite new to Singapore and frankly don’t fish all that often. However I can assure you that all the fish I caught above was at LEGAL fishing areas
The PB was caught from MacRitchie Reservoir at the designated fishing area. Maybe I was lucky but there you have it. The rest of the fish were also caught from the shore at legal fishing areas

I still enjoy fishing in Malaysia and frankly prefer to do so, but it is getting harder and harder for occasional anglers to catch something good. Singapore anglers are luckier in that respect

Cheers

You are lucky. There are definitely more fish than Penang. See this pics, when was the last time we can get this fish 2 km from Penang shore.

Unfortunately our dams are all out of reach to the “rakyat biasa” after Sept. 11.

I dont know it is the case that the Gomen does does trust the people or the people cannot be trusted, hence the ban.

Kram,

How on earth you caught the striped Trevally/ Gerong Belang using squid lure?

The fact that you caught all these fish from shore/esplanade shows that the water quality is good. I have been to Spore quite a number of times, and i noticed the water quality is very good, a testimonial what nature can offer if we keep the trash away from the rivers and sea. This is the return when we invest in the proper management of the environment which is lacking in Malaysia. At the end of the day we can save a lot of money by not have to pay for boat rentals just to catch Tenggiri or Trevally.

Kram, how is Singapore dealing with the invasion of Peacock Bass in general?

Nice ..hard to find decent size PB even in Malaysia…maybe the small onel already kena whacked …so no chance for them to breed/grow up

All the fish from Morib to Johor migrate to singapore for better future & way of living..

Enjoy the fishing process… including borrow fish for photoshot…

Good question or the same question i asked some of singapura kawan about a year back when i was still hunting for my 1st peacock bass in malaysia [8)]

The replied i got was no action has been taken since all the reservoirs in singapura are restricted zone with some open for public fishing but only on small desinated area with lures.

One of them ever shown me his peacock bass photo caught at the restricted zone not long ago weighted approx. 3kg in size and not only one but a few so this is an indication this alien invader live very healthly in the reservoirs.

Ah Tee,

Maybe Singapore dont have that many indegenous species that can be threatened by PB invasion, so they are sort of welcome PB, i mean if the people are happy fishing they will complaint less, so the central government has less headache.

truth be told,

i have the impression the national parks nor the public utilities board which are the main bodies taking care of all the reservoirs give any sh*t or even knows what sorta species are in their reservoirs.

It’s true, the temensis species is doing very very well in one of the reservoirs in Singapore… healthy specimens that easily exceed 2-3kgs have been caught by those who dare venture into illegal areas

From what i observed personally, they are coexsting happily with tomans, sebs, kaluis and arowanas in that reservoir. Rojak population, just like the human population in SG.hehe[:D]

Snook Hunter, the trevally not caught on the squid lure la. If you see closely, it was caught on a bottom rig. I was using prawn as bait. The squid lure only for size reference, not meant to mislead people

As for the reservoirs, there are plenty of PB but also stocked with other fish which are not really indigenous to Singapore since most of the reservoirs are man made anyway. But agree with Ipohmali that they all seem to co-exist happily.

Anyway, i think the fishing pressure overall is lower in singapore. So it is much easier to luck out and catch a decent fish.

I think the picture for Gerong Belang is to show the size of the squid lure compare to the Golden Trevally, It’s amazing and highly respect if the Singapore Angler’s could catch the Gerong Belang using squid lure hahaha :stuck_out_tongue:
