Multi-piece rod vs the common 2 piece

Hi there.

Been going through tackle shops for my next setup, i stumbled across some multi-piece rods. Having a multi-piece definitely eases travel and storage for longer rods like 9 footers, but does that mean compromising the overall strength of the rod?

Any opinions?

bro..if you’re looking for multi-piece, you might aswell get yourself a telescopic rod for travelling purpose…Startrec recently caught and landed 8kg patin with rm18 telescopic rod..
between 2 piece and multipice..there are few factors need to consider..curve angle,no of guides ,your overall set-up(reel and lines)…normally multi-piece rod cost more than 2 piece…
see the previous tread on 2 piece vs 1 piece rod… check..always ask yourself why you want to buy it first…what will you get out of purchasing it…(i haven’t purchase any rod or reel in the last 2 months-so my yoga works)..heeh

i’m a big fan of multi-piece rods. may need to pay through your nose if u want a very good one though…ultimate in portability and mobility. if u plan to get one, invest in a really good one. it will last for years to come. recent advances in rod technology has created very good multi-piece rods, well, good enough for me.

no offence but i hate telescopics, they just do’t seem to strike a balance anywhere at all! most of the time tip-heavy, whippy, and the guides are horrendous…

FT bro,

have you tried bassone xt shimano telescopic rod yet??? it’s one of the best rod i’ve ever owned, so good tat i own 2 of em n never looked back… of all the telescopic rod none really challenge it(u know la last time i always need to hide rod in bag to fish so imagine how many i;ve owned those days), including price ofcos lol

however i like the days sakura from majorcraft tho i have no money to afford one hehehhe… would be great if i traveling overseas but for now hehehe no need first… have u tried it as well mate, it seems very different from the 1 piece or 2 piece days MC so i wondered how they performed

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

yup, tried the bassone XT tele… last saw it at Sabre..not my cup of tea really. good that u find it useful!

i’ve tried the Nitro rods from australia… very powerful rod. very nice action. i have one…can handle most of my type of fishing.

also have the berkley series one 4 pc… a bit tip heavy, but can land a 3.5kg mangrove jack with not much problem. not very finesse though…

if u have knack for finesse, sensitivity, lightness/balance… u gotta try the japanese brands… insanely priced, but once u hold them u won’t let go.

look at fly rods for example. most, if not all, are 3-4 pieces. the advancements in multi-piece rods have been phenomenal. just remember to take extra care at the spigot joints… a little waxing and cleaning, and lotsa love… for the price u pay, i believe in ultimate portability and reliability.

Thx for all the replies. The reason for this is i thought i want a longer rod but 2 piece is hard to store and travel with. Just looking around, checking things out. Reason for this is for extra knowledge. Thx anyway. [:D]

Anywhere i can go look for it?

hey mate…

yup sure but am busy now perhaps later tonight will upload the pic for u to see

spec is 4-10lb. 5ft8inch. 4pcs. i think la… try to check online n see i’m currently not at home so agak2 only

HI Guys,

Just like FireTiger, I’m also a big fan of travel rods (also called multi-piece and smuggler rods, for obvious reasons!).

Over the last year or so, I have been buying only this type of rod. Like FT too, I have the Nitro 5-piece and Berkley series One 4 piece. These two rods plus the Shimano Tribal, cater for all my needs when jungle river fishing.

The Berkley does lure casting for the sebarau. It has a soft tip but a fairly strong butt. Can handle a 18-g Vision Island, no prob. For rm200+, it’s great value for money. I have two!

The Nitro is simply awesome. Again, soft tip but mega butt, perfect for baitfishing for kelah. But price oso awesome lah. Expect 4 figure hole in your pocket.

The Tribal can only be classed as a baitfishing rod. The butt is on the soft side, making it a mid-to-soft action rod, not fun for casting lures. It gets even floppier when you use the extension section. To me, can handle kelah up to say 3kg.

I have also bought a couple of cheap Ofmer rods (4-piece 7ft), light to ultra-light. I use them for casual trips to the nearby ponds. Something that I can stash underneath the car seat. But the quality of these numbers is left wanting. The spigot joints are a bit dodgy, and they are tip heavy

Good travel rods can match normal two-piece ones nowadays. The big advantage for me is when you do lots of travelling, especially overseas. Unless I’m going for particular trips Cauvery, I can now just stash the rods in my suitcase. No need for long rod cases.

Now I’m looking for longer travel rods, including float and feeder rods (coarse fishing). I’m waiting for a Daiwa Wilderness and Shakespeare Expedition and John Wilson Feeder rods to turn up on my doorstep. Will report when they arrive.

The only travel rods I have not considered are the really big ones for mahseer, big cats and the like. But these rods are already on the market, mainly for the Brits who go fishing in India and Spain for the big fish. These are rods that go to 12-ft in length, 5 or 6-piece! Alternatively, you can buy bass rods (surf rods) with 3-lb test (handling 90-gm casting weights too: 12-ft, 6 piece.

One common mistake anglers make is thinking they got the lightest gears with high end technology can haul up the biggest catch… but no… for brute strength or we call powerplay, we have to sacrifice weight.
Eg… aldebaran is versatile, but is it suitable when in dams filled with logs? during river casting, when u hit a big kelah do u think 20lbs can stop to fella from running down the river or into the snag? same goes for rods. if u try to lift the fish forcefully, the highcarbon rod doesnt stand a chance.

for impoundments, dams, rivers and wild-wild west, i use Ryoga 2020H and Stella 4000 for the job. both on 30-40lbs braided line. most important is the right setup for the right job. =)
Eg. a conquest 101 i’ve seen the reel kena wack by tomans upside down even with upgraded drag. so…a Conquest 200 would be a better choice right? though the weight is 220 compared to 260gm and the gear is much bigger. Its ok coz we are targetting trophy fish, besides.. a little more weight wont kill your wrist.

Same for rods, i wouldnt use my Megabass Destroyer to drag out the toman, instead i use my old GL2 to do the job. just explaining that we should be too concerned with the weight of our equipment.
