I am a novice and appreciate if you can help me on these questions. Thanks.
How much would a rod+reel+line combo cost? I am looking at Scientific Angler combo Wt5 which I found in eBay. Do we need to pay tax for this? or can I buy it locally? Tacklebox, perhaps?
I am traveling to Berlin next month and I know that DAM is from Germany. From their website, they also have a rod+reel combo, not sure how much would that cost here and whether it is better to get it locally.
Why dont you drop by a local fishing tackle store. I believe they will give you very good advise to your questions.
However, I’ll try my best to answer your question. If you are a Malaysian resident making a purchase from ebay, you dont have to pay sales tax. Tax only applies to the state and country you are living similar to the seller. For example, a US buyer and seller, both have to pay taxes. If you are a beginner in fly fishing, I wouldn’t advice you to get something very expensive. Try something very cheap and see if you really like fly fishing. Fly fishing is a fishing game sport not for everyone. Some may think that fly fishing in Malaysian water is not practical. As in the boat they are on, fishes they are going after, and etc. Many reasons.
I believe you can ask other forumers such as, Kurauking and Uncle Thomas, they have a shop you can visit. I also heard a guy by the name of Nick in KL area that specialize in fly fishing equipment. You can also try to look for him.
If you are traveling to German, you can do a cost comparison before going there. Check out the same model and price in Malaysia, and then go there to check the price. Then, rationally make your choice, if they are selling the same model cheaper, by all means buy it. Otherwise its the other way around.

I am a novice too.
Just for your information bro, DAM is not well known in fly fishing. Not a common brand at the least. That said, with so many OEMs out there now, please take my words at a pinch of salt.
There are some cheap and good beginner sets sold here in Malaysia. They are actually cheaper here than anywhere else. Check out Tacklebox on Retailers segment in this forum. Nick, the owner, should be able to help you. Tacklebox is specialised in fly fishing and offers a variety of product for beginners to professionals.
Otherwise Kurauking of Klang might be able to help too. He has a few entry level reels and lines if I am not mistaken. It has been a while since I last met him so I don’t know whether he still has stock or not. He has cheaper Aquanova lines that are suitable for beginners.
Buying online can be cheaper and fun sometimes. I’ve bought many fly fishing equipment online. But it also depends on the value and availability of the product here. In short, when buying online you need to be reasonably product specs and online trading savvy before deciding which one is a good deal. For beginner sets, you might want to have a feel of these products because you still do not know what you want at this point. Besides, there isn’t much to save from the already cut-throat prices of the entry level segment. Therefore I think buying from local retailers is a better option in your case.
Guys,
Thank you very much for your advice.
Yep, DAM has very limited choice (from their website/online catalog).
Will drop by Tacklebox for help as I am just staying in Sunway.
Thanks for the info.

Bro,
My short experience tells me that for (fly) fishing gears, prices in Europe are generally more expensive than here even in its original manufacturer’s country. Simple comparison is Abu reels are more expensive in Sweden than here (at least that’s what I have compared lah).
Buying in Malaysia got other benefits also. Can see, hold, try and can sometimes get free casting lesson also [:D][:D][:D][:D]. So many masta around for free tips!

Thanks, bro. Agreed. In that case, I will just go look see look see.
Shall take some photographs of their tackle shop.
After you acquired the gear, the next best thing to do is to practise the casting techniques, knots and perhaps fly tying. Nick Ooi organises casting classes near his shop, check out the dates with him. I have seen a lot of frustrations with the new fly boys with nice gear but unable to cast reasonable distance even after 6-8 months, then the interest wanes and fly fishing takes a back seat. What a shame because this is a good sport to take up. Good luck brother</font id=“maroon”>

Agreed. I think many had drawn to flyfishing due to the “gaya” way of casting. I am interested to pick up this method due to its sheer pleasure of having 1 on 1 tug-of-war with the fish. nothing to high tech and too fanciful that will mute the feel of being “in touch” with the fish. correct me if I am wrong
