sifu FR, i don’t think so that it can swim, i think it will hanging on my motorcycle key, he he he… cause i’ve just working on the lip, but i failed to place the lip at exactly perpendicular to the lure axis… so sad…
RB,
i see from yr photo there is still a lot of wood in yr shoe rack ma, hehehe
cutting the lip slot need to be very very carefull
i always mark the lip slot with template on both side of the lure
connect the lines from both side to have two perpendicular line on the lure’s belly
cut by using a small saw on one side n continue on the other side
u will have more keychains soon like me, especially when u are beginning! but like i said, u have done better than me when i 1st started. it’s a good progression and never let a bad lure go to waste, they are ur teachers in ur luremaking who will guide u and remind u when u look back!
today, me and yeapwl went to Lapala’s home aka LUREMAKING HEAVEN aka Bachelor’s Pad aka Paradise…we spent 12 humbling hours there chatting and learning lotsa stuffs from the sifu. it was a real eye opener as i have dreamt of visiting his place since i knew him online! (oops…anthony, looks like u’re gonna be havin more visitors hahahahahahhaha). luremaking is never ending…what i know today is only peanuts compared to Lapala’s wealth of knowledge, so to speak. i wish i could live next door hahahhahahahahah…THANX FOR everything sifu!~!~!

tight lines, bent rods, spitting lures & singing reels…
i hv a borad to hang all my ‘key chain’, my wife calls it ‘the board of disgrace’ ;-(
anyway, i find it very motivating n inspiring as when u look back, u can see the inprovmemt in yr laue making skill
i still hv my very 1st ‘key chain’ on the board n dont intend to give it away, kinda sensimental value hehehe
so dont stop here
u still hv a lot of wood left on the shoe rack ma hehehehe
sifu FT and FR, i will proceed with my second “keychain” soon, he he… but i need to buy the 5 min epoxy and carving set. by the way, thanks for your lecture, layaaaaannnnnnnnnn…
FR, why dont you just post the pic of your “board of disgrace”… he he…
p/s: petang ni nak test lure tu dekat tasik pandan perdana, nak tengok dia berenang kuak lentang ke kuak kupu-kupu ke atau free style, he he…
sifu FT, FR and lapala, i have changed my mind, i want to try that keychain on MJ at kota bharu when im home next week, he he… it can swim, even in fast retrieve. but i test without split rings and hooks, hope it will not give contrast result after i put a pair of hook on it.
will upload the final photo on thread “what do u build” later. and i will proceed to the second lure TONIGHT. i dont have any LC flash minnow, so im going to rumah Jai to borrow one and copy it. he he… thanks a lot sifus…
keng,
good to know that it swims. next thing on ur mind is castability, then float/sink/suspending. then many more things to come. do post any Q here, we are glad to be of help whenever possible.
i’m glad that we inspired some forummers to take this hobby up!
Part 3 will be out tomorro if i manage to complete it. it touches on some aspects of lure detailing(scales, paint scheme, foiling etc). sorry for the wait.

FT, i’m thinking of how to get more space to implant weight in the lure if im using direct steel wire from head to the tail of the lure, that is the wire is the bone of the lure and blocking me to dig a big hole for weight. the second one i want to make is the sinking one. i have carved the wood and also has just made a longkang for steel wire, and i test several sizes of split shot by using masking tape to stick it together with the carved wood, and put it into the water to find out which size will be sinking. and i found out that the split shot to be used is too big that i must dig a very deep hole to implant the weight. what can i do?
p/s: i’ve cut the split shot into 2 pieces, and reshape it from sphere to cube. one will be at the tail side and the other will be at the head side, so that the lure will sink horizontally.
Keng, make a hole first then install your hook hangar la. Then use a split shot. Split shot has slit in between and just slot it in between the wire da…

FR, yeah, memang syok! when im on my way to the lake to test the lure, berdebar-debar macam nak ambik result SPM pulak, he he… it really swim, but actually it swim more on one side because of the lip, maybe i can refine the lip so that the action will be improved.
i’ve make the sinking one, like the pic below. i reshape the split shot as shown in the pic and make a longkang for the steel wire. then i ketuk masuk dekat lubang yang dibuat di bahagian bawah lure. then, i throw it in the water, and it sink not so fast and not too slow, just as i wanted. he he… now i am waiting for the wood to dry, and will put a layer of epoxy to cover the longkang and to mount the weight later on.
u can use those thin lead strips use by electrician instead of sawing, banging shaping the split shot
go get from electrical wiring supply shop those laed strips, is 8mm wide x 1 or 2 m long, comes in a roll of RM2
FR, last week i went to an aquarium shop at pandan jaya, i ask them for polycarbonate, just a small piece, so they give me the scrap one, i mean lebihan daripada kerja diorang, it still with paper cover on both side, the size is about 12cm x 40cm, and he want RM15 for that scrap. but i didnt buy it because it is 3mm thick and i think RM15 is expensive, takut kena kencing, but when i read FT posting about the polycarbonate price, im a little bit shock! he he…
just wander how to fix the lip, just slot it in the lip slot and glue it with 5 min epoxy? or is there any more secure way to make it more unlikely to be peeled off?
i’m planning to do a deep diver, so afraid that the lip might give way after some time knocking the structure.
I come, I see, I fish!

(Team Longkang Gang Kelisa U4 2006)
for the deep diver (ala risto rap, DT series etc) the lip can be held on position with a small screw from below, say, near the ‘jaw’ of the lure. u can predrill a hole on the lip and the wood, and then secure with a screw, then epoxy the screw to cover the hole.
or, what the masters in US are doing are:
the line tie on the lip extends from the thru-wire from the lure body. like the one lapala showed us (either skeeter’s or coley’s). but the wire is then visible all the way from the lure body till the lip where it attaches.

I get my 2,5-3mm poly for free from a friend :D(i still ain’t sure which thickness is it). It’s used as a divider on the cigarette shelves. So if u see one try getting it for free
And from what i know most CD’s r policarbonate(see mith busters on discovery :D). U can try getting a 10 CD pack, that has 2 protective CD’s, that r transparent. Those will work as thinner lips. That’s what i use. At first i didn’t understand why it became brttle after glueing them, but i noticed that the glue i was using(some special plastic glue) was interracting with the poly, ans as soon as i started using epoxy on all the lips, the problems were gone.
Hope this helps. The transparent sheets on store freezers r poly as well. Almoust any protective traqnsperent sheet used as protective cover for posters or reclams in stores r policarbonate.
I’ll try remembering some more policarbonate sources, but policarbonate is everywhere arround u. I didn’t know there r more than one type of policarbonate, but as LaPala showed me there r more than i expected…
