Thought of starting a tread for fly fisherman’s in Penang. So, Penangites please identify yourself and if you could post some pictures and fly fishing places that you guys visit.
To start this tread here goes; it seems like Pulau Kendi is a good place for fly fishing. At the right time and place you can catch barracudda at spot #44 (I am nice to reveal this) …
Most of the time when the tide turns to the other side at the island, fly fishing there can be fun. I find using the ‘seaducer’ fly there is pretty good. Flies with a red head and a white body are proven to be deadly for barracudda as the colour is very similar to the ‘ang tau peng’ lure commonly used for trolling in Penang.
I’m from BM Penang. I’m not a fly fisherman but very curious and interested in this field. Very very interested. Though, all my friends are bottom fishers and nobody seems to know anything about flies!
Good idea to start this thread to get to know flyfishers around here. Maybe someday when you guys meet I can tag along and learn the ropes of flyfishing… and possibly become a flyer too [:D]
Pulsar13… nice to meet you and sure if you need any info I will try my best to help. In the mean while you can learn to cast and learn the pattern of flies. Then when the second bridge is open, the first bridge will be open for fishing again. Then, perhaps we can go fishing under the bridge. There are a lot of ikan todak down there. It can be fun!
hi, I am Olang Minyak and i normally fly fish with Bigtits88 and Choo and sometimes Capt Jack Sparrow. We normally fish along the irrigation canals and drains around Balik pulau for Tarpon, MJ, Siakap and Ang Tau Lay Hoo.
I also frequent Pros ponds like Bedong and also CWS. Teluk Bahang, Ayer Itam and Mengkuang Dams will be our next Fly Fishing playground soon.

Hi orangminyak,
I think you meant “bigbite88” instead of “bigtits88”… hehhe. Sorry just wanted to point that out
You mentioned ‘mengkuang dam’, can we fish ther? I thought the authorities dont allow us to fish? I may be wrong though.
Bigbite88,
I got the name right. hehhe…
Sure, we can go fishing one of these days, but I am not in PG now. Let me know of a big trip that you guys might be planning, perhaps I will make arrangement to meet you guys.
Pulsar13, PG have lots of places to offer for fly fishing. I tried Bedong pond 2 months ago, it’s a good place to start!
From what I know, Persatuan Memancing Pulau Pinang (PMPP) members can fish in either Teluk Bahang, Mengkuang or Ayer Itam dams on specific dates. The first of which is on the 6th of April which will be in Teluk Bahang Dam. Participation is on a first cum first serve basis and subject to a Rm30 fee.
As for BB88, he’s got lots of alternative names e.g. Boboi88 or even BigD*ck88 etc etc. Just depends on whether he’s been a good boi or not. But recently he bribed me with a fly jacket so for the time being his name is Bigbite88
Chuanjiek, when will you be back to Penang? We certainly can do with more of you more experienced fly anglers to guide us.

I would assume myself still learning hard, not really experienced yet. However, would love to share my knowledge and application for PG water use. Seems like there are a lot of interesting things we can do with fly.
Usually I come back 2 times a year, depending how busy I am. CNY I am always back
