Penang rivers. Are we being taken for a ride?

Hi Guys,

Not sure if many pop into this section of the forum, but hoping i get an ear from at least a few of you, and would be awesome if i got your thoughts in return.

As of late, the Penang State government has been running lots of environmental cleanup activity, and i applaud them for that.

However, i hear they are promoting things like EM Mud Balls feverishly in their conservation efforts, and this has me very worried. Ive seen many woo-woo practices before, like the Garbage Enzymes they promoted prior to this and such, which at least seems a fad that is finally quieting down.

In a closed system like a pond, or even lake, maybe they can come up with something on a paper, yet even that i’ve not seen. But rivers and the sea? this one a little hard la.

The last straw came when they claimed that they ‘cured’ Sg Kelian using these EM balls.

This in particular pissed me off royally, as they use pictures from Sg Kelian’s bad cycles, and compare it with its clear cycle and claim it was their woo-woo products that did it.

I live near Sg Kelian and i can very well vouch that the river cycles thru many clear/muddy and sludge/sandy phases every year, and for these guys to come in and claim false authority over it, instead of the real reasons like downpour and tides etc… well, that just wasnt very nice.

I then find out they are using the ‘success’ at Sg Kelian as a reason for moving on to other rivers… yet as i stare into its waters after breakfast the previous weekend, i notice the dirty cycle is back.

But these disgusting people have already gotten the publisity they wanted. They no longer cared about what the river is supposed to look like as they hunt for more publicity elsewhere…Even Gurney Drive was done lately.

Sorry for that long story, but its just part of what i feel is a publicity drive of a few characters i see leeching on to Guan Eng and his people to promote their own agendas.

I have many more observations to share, as i’ve done much study into the things these characters claim their products do.

More important for me now tho, is if there is anyone who might be able to advise or help take a real stand for proper education in our river conservation efforts, so these short-cut ‘feel good’ people get some resistance and at least be brought to try showing us what the real sciences they think they have are about.

I would not mind getting involved, but i do lack the scientific papers to make any real impact. These people have brushed me off before just by ignoring my plea for some answers when they could not answer my questions anymore.

It seems that these ‘guilt removing easy answer’ peddlers are out full swing and i fear that if no real authority rises to challenge them, the gullibility of our people will keep rising…

…as will the pollutants in our rivers.

Anyone have any advice?

Peace

JustJobe,

Heard about this mudballs before and have been trying to dig for some info on it but found almost nothing. You have any details on that?

Am currently working on Integrated Shoreline Management Plan for Penang; would love to ahve that detail if any.

Thanks.

Sild,

You can try to google EM1 or effective micro organism. Plenty of articles on it.

Understand found by a Jap scientist in the 80’. Many countries developing similar technology currently to clean up the water ways.

Met one sucessful organic farmer producing his own em using cacing(understand only 4 useful types - LOTM or Mr D should know) and horse dung. Good for the soil and can be used as pesticide. Basically idea is cultivating good micro organism, given a boost with O2 to 100 of millions times and apply it to the plant. Say 100 millions good micro organism against say 10 millions bad micro organism. So good one will dominant over the bad ones.

Still fairly new in our country but understand in NZ the government encouraging locals to produce they own em at home.

Anyway, hope to find more time to reseach and do some experiment on this EM thingy.

PopperCaster,
Yes most people make their own compost. Reduces the amount of garbage going to landfill and fertilizes the garden and the soil.
There are various compost/worm farm bins available from our local hardware store http://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/gardening_supplies/wheelbarrows_and_compost_bins/index.cfm

Many thanks for the link Bluenose, make life easy for those who wish to try out at home.

You're welcome. If you haven't already explore the site, there is a section on 'How to ...' Making compost is under 'Garden Care' http://www.mitre10.co.nz/how_to_guides/gardening.cfm Hope this helps you embark on composting project [:D]

Mitre10…old company…I 1st heard of them wayyyyy back in 81. 8D

Hi All,
Been awhile since i checked back here  sorry bz lar close to yr end

Yeah Sild. Whatever details i could get are from a few articles and vids online.

What bothers me about all this is the use of EM-1, a completely agricultural product, in a way it was never originally designed or tested to work in.

I also recently learned that this move by the PG government lacks any real academic bodies backing this.

When i saw vids showing that Garbage Enzyme was used to make the ball, even more curious i became, because that one is another funny practice in itself. To me, i feel like the move to mudballs was due the the Garbage Enzyme fad finally dying out and the folks with interests invested in these are trying to re-spark interests in it. I could be wrong tho, as that is just my speculation.

My main questions is, how do you go from an agricultural products with mixed feedback on efficacy to “making it into balls and throwing it into sea” will clear it up. I find no research backing this claim up too :frowning:

Latest news on EM, apparently Perak gomen is following the foot step.

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/12/2/nation/5221612&sec=nation

But again, getting public to involve in this EM or mud ball project believe main objective to create public awareness and cultivate care for nature. Similarly like call for river clean-up or gotong royong, main objective to cultivate public awareness. Best is to get the kids involve, life time education for the youngs. Adults are too late to change, bad habit die hard. Tat’s why u see so much rubbish in the rivers/sea.

Talk about effectiveness of such campaign to clean up rivers within short span of time, probably have to do it full time or joining the councils.

Latest news in The Star! Seem like this EM-1 thingy are catching more attention in the country. Even Surabaya Indonesia already ahead of us carry out in their garbage disposure.

Go check the recent Star papers. Just found out that there are so many methods to create the inoculants. No time to try. For those interested, can start making your own organic fertilizer and organic insecticide and start planting organic fruit trees/vege at your own backyard. No joke!
