hello to all…
newbie here like to learn flyfishing but dun really know where to start n how to start…some 1 pls guide..
As a beginner, I would first research online for information that are available over the internet. Then, when you understand the basis would you try to purchase a fly tackle and then eventually start fly fishing. Good luck ![]()
Go find yourself a flyfishing buddy… [:D] if you have friends who’s into flyfishing and have been fly fishing for sometime…
Or you could get professional help… I am sure Pak Amin would be glad to help for a small fee… [:D]

Fantastic idea! ![]()
Bro,
I would suggest that you go for a professional advice… the fundamental of fly casting and presentation are most important… Simply cast, yes… you might still land some fish, but.. you might build up your bad muscle and memories… Casting in die hard style…!!!
Pak Amin come down to KL very often, check with Nick of Tackle box for his schedule.. you could always join the casting clinic one Saturday evening before deciding weather you wanna pick up the game..

Skinniekids,
Apart from the other suggestions already written here, I would suggest a visit to Tacklebox in Subang Jaya. At least that was how I started. Lotsa friendly people there who are willing to help out in fly fishing and fly tying. There’s instructional videos on sale. A fair bit of reading materials also. Give it a try.

bro,
pick up a budget setup and start fly fishing even if u’re not quite sure. mistakes remind u what not to do. trust me, u will progress from there! happy fly-fishing!

Hi there. Watching the video is fine for getting to know the fundamentals. However nothing beats getting out there and practicing with a fly rod in your hand. Do call Nick up and find out when’s the next casting clinic. There would be experienced fly fishers to guide u and tell u what mistakes u are making.
You don’t need your own fly rod if you go to the clinic but would be good if you have your own set to practice with afterwards.

quote:Ok.... many of you probably not quite sure what actually 'the fundamentals & style of fly fishing' is all about. So let me give a some explanation. Fundamental: it is the basic/simple but important rules or substance of flyfishing and these are learning the right way of: - timing between the back & forward casts - loading the rod - straight line path of the back & forward casts - basic loop shapes - mechanics of various casts (e.g roll casts, Belgian casts etc etc etc) - mechanics of different loops - mechanics of presentations casts ( slack line casts, reach casts, straight line casts and others) AND then there is 'style' which is the way of casting. Beautiful casting can be achieved when you got the right 'fundamentals' because you have developed the right techniques of: - form, how you grip the rod; your hand & foot positions - how you apply power in fly casting - uses of the single & double haul - methods used to achieve various loops

TIP: if you know all these you can cure your casting problems example how to correct your tailing loop…[;)]
How I know all these??? - I started by reading alot and watching videos. But I found them unsatisfactory. So I went away to learn further and took a one-to-one course from the US FLY FISHING FEDERATION. I tell you nothing beats learning the right way from professionals.
Happy learning BUT the proper way, so that fly fishing in Malaysia will be recognized. MALAYSIA BOLEH LAH [:D]

skinny,
just had my 1st unofficial fly lesson yesterday from my singaporean sifu steven. i must say it does help a lot, especially correcting my posture mistakes and bad habit.
although i’ve been watching many video clips from youtube but i have to admit it’s best if you can have someone beside you observing how you cast. it’s common that most of us can’t see our own mistakes and we tend to forget the theories when taking them into practical [:p]
i’ll bring my fly set to the field near my house tomorrow and do more practice. yup, practice makes perfect [:)]
btw, u’re skinniekids from myfishing? i’m “ye zi” [:p]

ok… thanks…
hello to all…
i finally hav my 1st cast already…
it is much more harder then i thought…
viewing some frens n video look like easy but when i actually hold the rod with my hand…sht.. it’s tough.
btw. some ppl told me 7/8 wt rod is ideal for beginners. but i think that’s wrong…the set that i bought looks like not suitable for me.the worse case is i bought two of the sets thought to start learning with my Dad.
should i continue learning with that or should i get 1 more budget combo
from tackle box…[:(][:(][:(]
