Yo All…
Any boat owners & fishing kaki around the Port Klang area on MFN.? I live in Damansara and I have a boat in Port Klang & go out fishing almost anytime that the weather & tide permits. Otherwise, I would just go yum cha around Port Klang or RSYC. Maybe if anyone with similar interest in boats or sea fishing, and happen to be in the area; we could meet up.
Hitman,
Where do you go around port klang?
Hi Piscator.
I go just about anywhere around P.Angsa, P.Ketam, Westport, Northport. Recently the catch have been quite good at these areas, so don’t need to go to far.Used to go OFB & Jugra, but have not been to these two places for quite sometime, maybe becoming a bit too lazy la bro… hehehehe..
Where do you go Piscator..?
So far I fish in fresh water only. The sea is a bit too hot for comfort.
May be join up with you one day for a bit of Pulau Ketam experience as I was told the fish culture area is very relaxing. You will see that I dont emphasize on fishing for fish, but going fishing for relaxation. hahahaha…
Yo Hitman, I fish in Lumut/Pangkor area often on my friend’s speedboat. So far the trips have been very enjoyable - out in the open sea where the sense of relaxation engulfs you immediately. Am contemplating getting one myself and having it berthed at P.Klang area. Have a few nagging doubts/questions though. Hope you can help me out on these doubts.
One is I noticed that there is no “999” to call when you are in trouble in the open sea. Maybe there is such a service but not publicly made known. As a boat owner, who do you call if you develop engine problem at sea and needs towing services back to shore?
Two, are there any classes for beginners learning to use boats in the open sea. Equivalent to our RIMV-endorsed L-learning centres. Classes that also teach navigation, emergency rules, survival, etc.
Hope you can, as a boat owner, shed some light on these issues.
Thank you
Hanyt

U R rite Hanyt. Unfortunately theres no 999 calls 4 boaters in distress. As 4 RSYC, they have a radio, but… anybody monitoring???
As a keen boater myself, have long wished 4 such a rescue service. Good radio communications would b a great start!!!
Perhaps getting all boat owners to have a VHF radio would b a start???
Hi Piscator.</font id=“size1”>
I use to do fresh water fishing decades ago, found it interesting but now I only do sea, as I don’t really eat fresh water fishes. Yes, I agree with you that it can be rather hot in the open sea, but you can dress (on undress) for the heat… but once you get a hit using a size 6 or larger hook… you will instantly forget the heat. A good hat, long sleeved shirt, suntan lotion & drinks loads of cold water will surely cool you down. But I just love those sunset evenings, when you are on board with cool buddies & the sea breeze just take your breath away.

Brother to Who..?? Doc.?? Doc who..??..[:D].. Hehehehe… Yup he’s my big bro, a cool bro too… but I’m the good looking one.. so don’t get confused.. How you been RR..?? Maybe should catch up again one of these days.. & yum cha or light fishing around Pulau Angsa / Ketam.
Hi Hanyt,</font id=“size1”></font id=“blue”>
A good VHF radio will do well when you are in trouble. There is an emergency channel that you can set the VHF radio to. Internationally it’s locked on “CHANNEL 16” in general terms or 156.800ghz in frequency terms. All ships & harbour masters have this channel turned ‘ON’ always & will render assistance when there is a distress call. We can have a good radio communications system; or the best, for that matter… but is there anyone monitoring it…?? Just as in RSYC. So with good friends about, we look out for each other & keep an eye should there be any problems out at sea. It’s also good to keep some important mobile phone numbers.
Sadly too, I don’t think there is any school that teaches you basic boating ethics in Malaysia. It’s just like ,.. you are thrown in the deep end of the pool. How you go about securing yourself; is entirely up to you. But most importantly;.. in boating & this is so IMPORTANT that I cannot over emphasize it</font id=“blue”></font id=“size3”>… Listen to the right people</font id=“size2”>.</font id=“size2”> How do you know who’s the right people..?? That will have to come; when you go about trying to “meet the right people” & “shopping” for boat or boat stuff. Because of what I have gone thru, I have actually created a website http://www.boat-malaysia.com related to boats & boating in Malaysia. It’s to give a true & clearer picture of the boating scene in Malaysia. It is under construction at the moment, but you can just have a look at it if you like. A little lazy to get off my butt to get it done… but it will be done.
I do meet up frequently with “kakis” for yum cha & fishing trips. We usually meet up at Subang or Port Klang or anywhere else for that matter..
All right guys… going for my cha keu teow breakfast now… Happy New Year 2009.
Hello Hitman and Pegasus,
Thank you for the replies. They answered my questions but at the same time confirmed my fears on the non-existent maritime rescue services. Ha ha. Guess I will defer the decision to get a boat to next year.
While I was in Lumut, I heard about the case of this guy who was fishing alone in his small fibreglass boat near some rocky shores. It got dark and he couldn’t find his way back. Strong winds and engine trouble led him to the open seas. Five days later, his family received a call from Sumatra side saying that he was weak but OK and seeking help to get back to Malaysia. Apparently his boat drifted out and the currents took him to Sumatra. Stories like this sent shivers up my spine. It also highlights the lack [or absence] of maritime rescue services in this part of the world.
Hitman, will take up your offer to meet up with “the right people” after the festivities. Meanwhile here’s Cheers and Happy 2009 to you and Pegasus and all the other “right people”. Regards.
