Project: Budget tunning for baitcaster

Hi Guys..

Now in the middle to supertune my baitcaster.. But I always have a nightmare for this kind of thing.. Although I have successfully supertune spinning reel (cos easy), I still din dare to touch baitcaster.. Probably it is much complex than spinning reels.

Well, I will put my plans here so that sifus outside can give me some advice..

Reel : Mitchell Spidercast SCP 400

Plan 1 : Friction Ring.
I will start with this part to make my casting smoother.
Plans to soft sanding and polish with “autosol” (sorry if my
spelling wrong)

Plan 2 : Change my handle knob.
I plan to buy 2 lightweight aluminium handle knob from tce
tackle (should be RM120 total) and a little modding to the
shaft as i found out it is not “screw type” like other
reels. It is some kind of dead end but plan to dril it out
carefully.. Should be much lighter than plastic knob and add
some bling bling as well.

Plan 3 : Clean my pinion gear and braking mechanism.
Now the hard part comes in. I need to dissamble everything..
Pins, gears, washers and other complex, tiny, weird looking
parts need to open up… Lolzz.. Then I pick up something
look like pinion gear (agak-agak) and clean it with soft
sanding, washing with warm water and polish it with WD40.
Yeah, you can do it using WD40.. [:D]

My braking mechanism seems like a cheap looking cloth plus
some washer.. Feel like wanna change to carbon matrix but
the price is hell out of my range.. So no choice. Use back
the old one laa.. But take all out and clean it with soft
cloth and let it dry in direct sunlight. Cos I just have a
feeling the braking system is contact with some oil and
grease.. Hopefully can change the feel..

Plan 4 : Respray my frame and cover.
Tough job for this one. First need to find the colour and
sanding. Since it is smooth surface, I think wanna put some
primwer first but some how will increase the weight and make
my casting poorer.. Gonna check the spray for Tamiya rc cars
which they use to spray smooth surface parts.. Sanding the
parts and clean it with warm water.

I feel like wanna sanding the old paint from the frame off
to expose the naked aluminium look. Then I will spray some
lacquer or clear cost for protection purpose. The cover will
     be sparkling yellow.. [:D]

Plans 5 : Reoil all other moving mechanism.
Same old trick. [:p]

Pls leave your comment and thank for your contribution.

Cheers~

Hooi ,

While you are at it , why don’t you consider upgrading to ceramic hybrid bearings for the spool and change the drag washers to carbontex . As for respraying the body , ask the advise from those in the car refinishing business , they are the one who know best and may be able to supply the paints ( primer , basecoat , color coat n clearcoat ) without your having to buy too much for just one reel . I imagine airbrush spray will be needed , some car refinish shop may have it .

Good luck .

Jon .

Hi Bro..

Thanks for the advice.. Considering changing the bearing as well. But changing the drag washer to carbontex.. Woww!! Cost a fortune.. hehehe.. But who cares.. Maybe I will haha.. And for the paint, I can get for free.. My father’s factory have a lot.. [8D]

Cheers~

bro! if you can afford rm120 for 2 knobs. i wonder why rm30-40 set of carbontex washer is out of your reach?

yeah mate… carbontex dont cost much… pop up to sabre tackle in KL if u r nearby to get a set of carbontex, just RM30±, it dont cost a fortune really, just save up on a rapala and u can have it liau hahaha

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi Sifus,

Oh really? Then this will save my day. Hahaha.. Thanks for the drag info..

i guess that all new AbU’s model carried carbontex..or am i wrong?

hehe…yeah sometime you can build a house for others but not a hut for youself…

for tuning…both inside and outside should be done if you really wannado it..
not for me thou…i like standard gears…low ends…no maintenance…use until
they broke..buy new ones…save a fortune…enjoy the sport…

yeah new abu models are have their own version of carbontex(carbon matrix) implemented inside

but i dont think this particular model carries it though
