Rapala Techniques

just to revive this thread, as this is a good thread to share our knowledge of luring.

Tail Dancer 07/09
Application: Mangrove area, casting to snags
Method: cast as near to the snag, let the lure sit on the surface for a while. Quick sharp wrist action to bring the lure dive as deep as possible, pause to let the lure float and then follow by steady retrieve.

Most fishes hide around the snags, letting the lure sits on the surface is to give them time to notice that food has landed, to get their attention. Then the sharp wrist action is to bring the lure right to their faces, letting it float to fool them that this “food” is injured. Last action to retrieve, is to fool them that this “food” is trying to escape.

There are times when the lure sit on the surface, the fish whack, this is rare. There are times after the twitching and when letting the lure float, the fish whack, not very common. Most of the time is when you start the retrieve and after a few turns, the fishes whack but dun dismay if there is no hits. There are times that they chased right close to the boat[:D]

This is just something to add to what Fred has posted and I do hope that this will help.

Fishing DT’s ( great for stumps and branches), DT Flat (Great for rocks, rocky and snady bottom, branches and stumps), TD’s( great for stumps and branches) & Deep Shad Rap( great for stumps and branches)
Location: Snaggy areas ( Branches, Stumps and rocks)
Target Species: Sebbies, Toman, MJ

I personally love fishing structures with cranks. A few things I will always make sure before I fish these places…

  1. Have a good soft tipped rod with a good amount of backbone… The Rapala rods are my fav. most bang for your buck…
  2. Good amount of top shot… as I fish with braids rocks and sharp structures make short work out of my line…

Here is how I work my retrieve…

  1. 1st Cast… very slow retrieve… this will give me an idea on what is down there…
  2. 2nd cast same spot… 1 - 3 solid consistent pulls… I don’t really jerk the line.. takut sangkut … hehehehehe… get my lure to the desired depth and slow retrieve.
  3. I will just repeat what i did on the second cast and include a couple of pauses in between and also a little jerk here and there…

Things to look out for:-
I find cranking works best when we keep the retrieve at a good pace… It can be slow or fast, I prefer a slow pace with pauses and tiny twitches in between, for me this keeps the lure in the zone longer and also give the fish enough time to react…
Also s slow pace keeps me out of the snags and reduces my chances of sangkut…

How I reduce my sangkut rate… having a decent cranking rod like the Rapala rod is an added advantage, the soft tip if very forgiving when fishing in heavy structure… you will have a slight time delay when u hit a structure, as such every time I hit a structure I will stop… how do i know it is structure and not fish… if i feed a hit/tug or a knock… I stop and pause…if i feel a solid pull.. then I will strike.

A lot of people i fish with will strike without waiting or pausing and about 60% to 80% of the time they will drive the hooks straight into a snag…

Hope the above has helped…

No pain no gain, dont try dont know… muahahahahaha
