His work is truly AMAZING!!! I like the story about how the US Customs office confiscated his ultra realistic nymph fly thinking that it was a real insect which had been coated in plastic and then mounted onto a fish hook. [:)]
I don’t think anyone in Malaysia even comes close to tying such realistic flies.
Maybe you can be the first, LaPala?
heheheh… uglee flies oso work down here, no need for realistic one but one thing for sure, EK has a new way delivering fly onto the targeted spot using a lastik…

ha ha does that mean EK still cannot cast? I’d believe that since he’s on who can “char beehoon” a spinning outfit with some regularity [:D][:D][:D]
Tangyp: maybe one day, very tempted to order his book, “lau hao sui” until wet wet. Even not learning to tie, just looking at the picss be nice.

I tried EK’s 9wt fly set and feel awkwardly using it, no wonder he invented new fly casting method using a lastik…

My dear “friend” Wahoo, patience will be rewarded. Just got a set of Fenwick 9wt for a very special price, cheaper than the 55’ training line. Will let you try it later.
And yes, Firetiger, it will have the 80lb braids for backing.
Sabar? cannot sabar oledi once waited you two fishing but catch nothing except the vibrating lalat… heheheh

dear Wahoo,
Fly fishing must be done with patience and skill both of the rod and when a fly is being created. A skilled caster with a rod but equiped with a poor fly will have no fish except if the fish is “blinded”. A poor caster with the best fly will also not get his fish unless it was his lucky day or if the fish isn’t too smart.
Vibrating fly…, that’s is just a bonus.
Good Day,
Interesting… may I first suggest looking at the following website which specializes in realistic tying:
http://www.realisticflytyer.com/
I dabble in it a bit myself, both fishing flies and art flies… hehe:
Christopher
That’s some really great flies you tie Chris. What’s ur nick in realistic? I registered there sometime ago but haven’t started on attempting realistic flies yet, still stumped by hre where to get some materials. I have ordered that Paul Whillock book though; now eagerly awaiting it’s arrival [:D]

Chris,
If you come to Malaysia again, you may want to leave your mozzie fly at home. The custom here might stop you thinking you are malaria or dengue carrier. [:D]
I have a more serious question. Is it an art or is it a tool? Both? If so what is the weighting like? 50% art 50% tool? What is your opinion?
I tried tying realistic fly but abandoned it after realising I am not going to be good at it. [:D] Too impatient.
Cheers
Good Day,
Thanks fellas!
First, my nick in the realistic forum is steelie.
That is part of the fun for the realistics for me. It can either be art or useful. For example, the first two pics are of fishable realistics where as the second two are for display only. It is not to say that I only tie realistic patterns either. I tie alot of “basic” patterns because they simply work. I tie realistics for fishing both for the challenge it provides at the vise , and for fishing pressured water and or picky fish. So I guess one could say that in some cases these flies are both art and tool but they can also be one or the other… doh.
Christopher
That is more like a collector’s item.. than a fly.. [:D]
Good Day,
FisheR - Indded the bottom two are just that, collector pieces.
Back to the original question by LaPala. Realistic tying in many ways is still in its infancy. However, as stated prior, take a look at http://www.realisticflytyer.com/ There are threads directly related to materials. many of the materials we use in regular fly tying can or are used in realistic tying. However, there are also many other materials that can be found at the DIY, craft store or even office supply store. The beuaty of realistic tying is allowing yourself to determine what you will use and or experiment with. For example, on the Hexagina above (yellow-ish one) the wings are made with fine paint brush fibbets for the veins, the wings are clear scotch tape and the darker veins were drawn in by hand. The legs for example are shaped broom bristles. Just allow for your creativity to soar. There is no true right or wrong, so long as the fliy is mostly tied… hehe.
