not all shops have similar capacities. shop A may have only one reel X for sale, while shop B may have 10 for sale. thus prices differ

not all shops treat you similarly i.e service. some will not bother to entertain you, while others are like good friends where u can go to the shop, sit, drink, chat and end up not buying anything at all. thus prices differ

some tackle shops are within walking distances to many other tackle shops, and each has their own way of getting their customers, while some shops are the only shop in town, thus prices differ

some shops are run by pure businessmen with no relation to fishing at all, while some are run by anglers like you and me… some keep the shop alive by keeping sales healthy, some keep the shops alive by running clinics/lessons/building rapport/fostering camaraderie, thus prices differ.

some products carry official warranty, and some are grey imports… some get it from the local distributor, while some go out of their way to import stuffs. thus prices differ.

say, if you’re a regular customer at shop A and have spent 5 digits there all these while, wouldn’t you expect to get a better price than say a random person walking into a shop asking the? food for thought ya…

always look for the MSRP. if you get 15-20% off then it should be ok. if u are getting more then u are someone special to the shop owner.

sometimes, the prices reflect on ourselves as a customer, as perceived by the shop caretaker. that says a lot about our own attitude too [:D]

i’ll continue later after work… [:D]

thanks bro ft… we know we can always count on u for advice on topic like this… pls enlighten us later on k… thanks

rk bro, listen to ft advice… this would be interesting… i always compare prices first before i make any purchase… including searching online… this helps me understand the pricing better, esp for exp tackles…

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

bro..tjs agree..its reels/rods like cars, where we can survey around…when you like for sure you will go all out to get it…i do agree FiR3 TiG3R…that better you know the owner the better the service is…its vice versa…so this is an intresting topic to be discussed… and you’re correct about spending $$$$ equals better priceses and service…but what if you’re on limited budget (have to show account to HM on regular basis- and had to play aorund with figures to ballance my account)…so where do we get good deals…what if we can get even better deals somewhere else…what i normally do is…check online tackle shops prices (normally in USD/EUROS/GBP)get the price in RM..use that as base to to check for best deals…hmmm…

actually the price shown in Jap/US/UK websites are not exactly accurate when the currency is converted to RM. international brands usually have different MSRP for different markets…

for example, the new ABU Morrum ZX was listed at USD499 on Japantackle.com,47000jpy on purefishing.jp, whereas i got mine for around rm1200+/- locally

some brands actually boycott malaysian markets because of the ‘lower’ pricing aka ‘spoil the market value’ kinna thingy…so that is why when we order certain parts/reels/rods of collector’s value or high-end stuffs, we are always at the last in their list. their priority is usually JAPAN,USA, UK, AUSTRALIA etc…because they go by number of orders. that is why some of our local tackle shops deal directly from those countries aka Grey Imports, instead of going through the local distributor for a certain brand!

also, the recent ‘Daiwa 50% off MSRP’ prior to the world cup by THE LOCAL DISTRIBUTOR OF THE BRAND had bludgeoned a lot of retailers, including their i-Shop carriers…

oopss..out of topic, hehehe…let’s get back to the main question by RK.

best solution to your problem would be, save up if u are really serious in getting the dream reel. remember to weigh out the reasons why u wanted the reel/rod. need vs want. this is my serious advice to fishos. go for the reel if u can, and don’t look back. and after u get it, don’t look at other things until ur pocket fills up again.

i have learnt the hard way by buying lots of unnecessary stuff along the way, only to end up wondering why i hadn’t thought about it earlier! [:D] currently, in my possession are the reels that i have learned to trust, reels that stood the test. the rest had been sold off…

thanks for the valuable info.[;)]..i owe you yamcha bro[:p]…(look like i owe alot of people yamcha)..hehe..somethimes…you save for long time..when you finally decide to buy..then its a disaster..its either out of stock or next day you purchase it..the market price drop..its happend to me…i bought my kelisa for about rm37-38k..exatcly the next day after i took my car home…nationwide local car prices drop between 1.5 to 2k…rugi man…just 2k been knocked off the cars value when the cars milage was not even reached 50km…
another senario..would be the very next day after you purchase the rod/reel…the model goes on sale in another shop…although you got what you wanted…you will be kinda heart broken for paying more than its market value..[V]

back to the issue[:D]…i was planing to use this tread to scout around the best deal..mobilise our brotherhood…eg…‘broA’ would be a regular at XYZ shop and gets super cheap prices…‘broB’ wants to purchase reel (reel 007)..the normal price at xyz shop around Rm1000…but ‘broA’ can get it it for RM850 together with freebies…the only extra cost for ‘broB’ is yamcha for A to help B to get good deal…plus 'broA’s market value with XYZ shops increase more which equeals to even better deals in the future…so its win-win for everyone…

best deals? haha…

i once bought a reel for rm400 from a very very small fishing shop, which i thought was a good deal for that quality reel. normally it would have cost rm550. he only had 3 units with him. so i jumped at the opportunity.

i then found out shop A was selling it for rm350. he had about 10-15 units at his disposal.

i also found out that the reel is in limited stocks around the country, and most shops i’ve been to do not carry this reel as it was a clearance sale from the local distributor to make way for a newer, replacement for the said reel.

was i upset? a bit, but got over it. but who’s to be blamed?

i found myself guilty in the end.

  1. did not research enough on the price the said item.
  2. bought on impulse, want>need
  3. blinded by the fact that it was a ‘limited’ stock, and a bit ‘kiasu’
  4. what i got in return was ‘friendship’ with the shop owner, whom i managed to get some exotic old goodies from time to time at unbeatable prices, teh/kopi and picture viewing session, sharing of experiences.

i now have a few ‘regular’ haunts… some shops i will only buy reels from them, some only rods, some only lures, and some only others…i get unbeatable prices, treatment and companionship. from time to time, i visit the ‘hypermart’ aka Kepong Tackle whenever i’m in KL for some look-see on latest trends etc, and will buy if i get a good bargain.

don’t be a sucker for cheap prices all the time. give tackleshops some benefit of the doubt, put yourselves in their shoes. some people will prey on your weakness one day. like buying top-tier reels for rock bottom prices. there’s always a catch. for example, ‘smuggled’ products which have different internal parts etc…branded lures in different packaging etc

best advice: be informed, there’s always Google [:D]

do check certain reputable overseas online tackleshops from time to time, and u may actually find a bargain. i’ve done a few online transactions from www.plat.co.jp, they’re nice people.

Hi guys,
Speaking of reels, i plan to buy a baitcasting reel (the round one, not the low profile). Which brand do you recommend? Something at the reasonable price range as i’m still a student, no money.. Haha. I saw a Okuma reel that looks promising and price about RM100++. Any suggestions?

In need of inspiration and LOADS of poison![;)]

tomman reel should be around that price…not sure of performence or price..

I’m currently using a Tomman spinning.. Drag still good but something feels loose.. Haha. Maybe my imagination. But looking for a nice round baitcast reel(brand plays a role in my choice). Haha. Shimano’s crazy expensive..

tomman reels are ok, but things do begin to get loose after some time.
it’s true that we get what we pay for.

on that note… hmmm.. a RM100 budget for a new round bc… what brands seem to appeal to u more than others (since u said it matters a lot)?

and what do u plan to use the reel for?
and how often do u plan to use it?
and what rod are u gonna pair it with?

i know ppl who r using more economical fishing gear n criticize those who spend more money on higher end stuff, but the truth is that some ppl fish maybe 2-3 times a year only (2-3 days a year). so they barely put the quality of their gears to the test anyway.

matching the reel n rod is very crucial when considering potential buys. it’s especially crucial if u do lure fishing n make at least 200-300 casts a day while out fishing.

getting a bc reel, u’ll have to consider what kind of fishing u’ll be using it for, what kind of lures u’ll be using most, what kind of fish u’ll be targeting, etc.

true..bro..well said…lets just say..narrow down our search from rm100 to 200 range..find all models in this range and compare the pro’s and con’s of it…then survey for the best price in town…
