REELS FOR DISTANCE CASTING

Hi Sports Casters,

For distance/sports casting, I use the following:

  1. I use only Abu 5500 multiplier reels.

  2. I don’t like using brake blocks, all my reels are magnetic braking.

  3. I use “Chris Macey” knobby magnetic brakes system exclusively and rarely use the slidy (Abu Mag Elite).

Just curious…what do you guys out there use??

MSC

ive got 2 5500 both with mag conversions
2 black 6500cts with keith bartlett conversions
abu 6600 with mark jakins conversion

thats all the reels i got now sold most of them didnt see the point in having loads of reels so sold them on ebay

Hi Tom,

In total you actually have 5 field casting reels right? That’s quite a collection still…he he.

I’ve not seen the Keith Bartlett and the Mark Jankins mag conversions, how does it look like?

1 Abu Sport Rocket MK II 6500 CT for 125gm only, attached with my own made side mag, abec 3 bearing…and it’s the record reel…the rod - Zziplex DYMIC LT 14…

hi, Aznaff,

Is it true the casting reel cast the rig further than spinning one?

I do casting but only for fresh water, am thinking into Surf Cast at sea. I am used to spinning when Surf Casting but would like to know your opinion if casting reel cast further? thanks

Hi Pocketfreak,

Yes, it is a proven fact that the multiplier reel can cast further than the spinning reel especially on the casting field.

That is why in distance casting tourny, the majority of the casters use multiplier reels, even down here in Malaysia and Singapore.

But of course the choice of multiplier reels to maximize distance in a surf fishing scenario would make a diiference. I prefer using Abu 6500 (open cage) reels for clean beach and thinner lines (0.35mm)and the Daiwa Slosh 20 or 30 for rough ground and thicker lines (0.40/0.45mm).

Wish you luck in your venture using multiplier reels for surf fishing ya. Anyway how’s the ISO fishing going on for you here?

p/s why don’t you join us/or look see in Kuantan this 2 and 3-6-07 for the surfcasting tourny.
