Results from National River Clean Up 2010

Hi Guys,

Just would like to share with you about this event.

The NRCU was held last Sunday, 6June2010, in 13 venues (picnic rivers) around the country. 468 volunteers came out with garbage bags and latex gloves, to collect 2.8 tonnes of rubbish from our rivers.

This second NRCU breaks the record of last year, more than doubling the statistics. The following are the general details:

In all, it’s been a great outing. The most interesting venue must be Sg Ferringhi in Penang. LongkangGang and PMPP guys, led by Lannun and Tiger2, had to endure heavy rain and a 7-ft flood, and yet managed to collect heaps of rubbish. Rod Warrior was “bottle champ”, carting more than 30 mineral bottles.

Obviously, the biggest rubbish contributor is mineral water bottles. This was as we suspected, hence the reason why we encouraged everyone to bring their own re-usable bottles instead. We will highlight this when we communicate to the relevant regulators/manufacturers.

For recent articles, check out The Star 22May, and Berita Harian 6June.

Thank you to all organisations and individuals who have participated. And many thanks to our sponsors: Coca-Cola, Rentokil-Initial, and various individuals who have sponsored the extra garbage bags, latex gloves, buntings, commemorative plaques and KAGUM car stickers. You guys are GREAT!!

See you at the next River Clean Up!!!
