IMHO the HKK (i.e. Hari Kraf Kebangsaan) 2009 is the best with the Khemah Kembang Api whereby they practically made pisau, parang and golok there plus the already made earlier.
I went to the HKK 2010 and I felt so frustrated with the standard and quality of our local pisau, parang, golok, pedang etc.
No big name attended it. I think this year also the same!
Sorry to say aloud that it seems our local smith are sort of dormant!
CMIIAW but they are not moving at all!
In fact they lose the knowledge of our earlier smiths and they haven’t gain the knowledge of the western smiths!
Ask them about the besi pamor (i.e. damascus steel) and they said it’s a besi tua (i.e. ancient steel) and they are not making it any more!
In other words they don’t really know how to make a damscus steel any longer!
Meaning the ancient smith of 1500 era (i.e. Malacca Empire) were very much better than them!
Ask them about the type of steels for their pisau, parang and golok and they said they used besi papan gen saw or besi spring kereta or besi spring land rover, besi paku rel keretapi etc etc.
5160, 1095, L6, W2, O1, 52100, D2 etc etc are just some numbers that doesn’t carry any meaning to them!
Meaning they are left so far behind the western smiths!
Once, I think in HKK 2010, they showed me a Pedang Samurai. I simply asked the guy whether it’s a Tanto or Wakizashi or Katana and the guy showed me a blank face!
Again he showed me another blank face when I asked him about tamahagane, hamon, tsuba, habaki, saya!
Another blank face is shown when I asked him about tameshigiri!
I means it’s okay to make a Samurai sword but one has to really know what the Samurai sword is before claiming that he made one!
And we haven’t talk about heat treatment, annealing, martensite, hardening an tempering, hamon, bluing, etching, handrubbed finish, mirror finish, HRC, wootz etc etc!
What they actually show and sell are the arts of making wooden handles and wooden sheaths! They really good at wood carving!
But, how about the ergonomic of the handle? I’m not talking about the term but the actual feel of the handle in the hand!
My working experience in coconut plantation fields and padi fields told me that a carved handle is not good for fieldworks! Smoothen handle is far better in hand!
A carved handle will surely cause blisters to fingers and palm in no time! Test it!
So what to do?
Pak Samo, it’s good if you can write something on this topic and publish it in papers!
IMHO it’s something in line with your profession!
Make those smiths, menteris, politicians, students, people all to open eyes!
You suggest to them to equip our army so that they carry golok or short parang lading as their EDC instead of British Army Dagger!
Or maybe you can give a talk about the modern knife making technology vs the ancient knife making secrets vs the local current knife making technique in the next HKK 2012
