hi, i’m new in this forum. a rock hopper of sydney from kl. i would
like to share with fellow malaysian the amazing variety of fish we catch off the rock around sydney. fishing technique, bait gathering, and the
most important aspect of rock fishing (safety issues). i will begin
with photos of our favourites. hope they are of interest to forumer.
Dear Superreel, I visit Sydney often on business trips. May I contact you and follow you out if you are going out on these kinda trips?
2 months ago when I was at Sydney, I chartered a boat out(very expensive) but caught a few trevallies only.
I will be back in Sydney mid Sept, next month. I usually will bring my rods in a rod holder with me.
hi, rs.
no ploblem. if ur alone don’t bother to bring any gear for rock fishing. just bring a pair of old
shoes to add metal plate to it. you can use my gear cos your gear may not be suitable.
hi, rs.
in sydney you can fish whenever you like if the weather permit. i can always find someone
to fish with you anytime. btw the chartered boat trip you mentioned was it jigging or general
bottom fishing. i a’m a newbie in jigging cought my 1st fish after three outing.
SR, the black rock grouper with blue eye lids, looks like a cross between a grouper and a parrotfish(due to its mouth).
I am also surprised you can catch squid of that size from the shore.
rs. learned a lot about jigging from mfn. i think the heavy gear i use may be the problem.
as for kingfish jigging. the catches were not good at all this year. my three outing only seen
three or four caught. btw a 8 hr jigging trip cost 120 aud. per person.
rs. that’s a blue grouper. don’t think it belongs to the grouper family. it belongs to the wrasse
species (sow mei) the teeth look like parrot fish. look at the set of denture in the photo.
it taste really nice. their diet consist of sea urchin and crab. not only we can catch squid
off the rock. we regularly catch cuttlefish 5-10 kg off the rock in winter.
SR, the boat I chartered costs me AUD600 for half a day. Catch was not good, just a few trevallies.
I chartered another boat earlier this year in Auckland, NZ. Caught(and released) 50+ red snappers(size 2-3kgs) in 3 hours.
hi superreel, nice fish you have caught! Looks like sydney has lots of kingfish, luderick (black snapper), red snapper and squid.
Surf fishing can be very dangerous. Alot of people have died by drowing, especially those that are unprepared and take too much risk!
Just a note, Always watch the weather and swell forecast when going fishing on the ocean! Things can get very nasty very fast!!
Great job trying to educate people.
quote:Originally posted by kenchen Bro Briank , is it true that there was chartered helicopter flight for fishingin NZ ? there's a lot of fishes in the designated spot.
hi kenchen, yes it is true. we have helicopter fishing here, they will fly you to a rock fishing spot in a secluded place to fish! And those spots you can catch XOS snapper, kingfish, etc. The NZ pride themselve with the BIG 3- within a day a helicopter can fly you everywhere to catch a marlin, trout and shoot a deer. Personally I have not done it, but I can see that it will fullfill the dreams of many outdoor person.
Morning guys ! That is a fresh injection here to get the adrenaline running again, weather has been erratic lately.
Bro superreel, NIce catches from the rocks. I am RS’s fishing kaki and we both hailed from Penang. The custom made shoes looks awesome and also hi-lights great care/safety first whilst doing these rock fishing.
Are you using surf rods or just any 8footer will do the job ?
Hi briank, long time no chat, the twins are into their 3rd month - easier now since they sleep 11pm-5am and they are a delight to look after, now that they can smile and utter all sorts of sounds and can be quite hilarious at times.</font id=“green”>

Hi NexBigCatch, indeed long time no chat! Been so busy with my new house. Problem with buying old houses, so much maintenance Its over 3months I have not gone fishing, now really itching to go fish. Unfortunately, the winter weather is almost always horrible.
Great to know that your babies are doing well! At 3 months they are very dependant us. I can only say, babies get cuter as they age. my girl is now 20 months, and she never fails to amaze me with new things she does and says!! So you still have many many more months of fun. But mind you, as they learn to crawl and walk we need to grow eyes behind our head, because they can get into alot of miscief. [:D]
Normally rock fishing here, we use rod that are over 10feet long. those kingi superreel caught would be have posed a big challenge coz they are known to play dirty when hooked! So cudos to superreel for landing them.
