Would appreciate rod and reel suggestion for the following application :
- Snaggy pond - need to reel back fish as quick as possible
- Fish - freshwater fishes range from 5-15 kgs (patin, tongsan, pacu)
- Rod - need good “control” of the fish
- Reel - drag is tight enough
- Budget - RM1k thereabout. Of course if can spend less than that will be better haha
What size/stiffness/spec of rods and reels are suitable ? Dont wish to carry oversized or heavy equipment than needed
Have owned only 3-4 sets of rods + reels before, so am still inexperience to fishing tackle selection. Hope sifu-sifu can teach
Suggestion of brand and model would be very helpful to cut down my search time too
Thanks !
if u are very serious in pond fishing (using baits), i’d suggest to get a hand on the european carp rods paired with a baitrunner… fits the bill.
don’t think the rods are available locally but the baitrunners are.

WAR: it’s not about who’s RIGHT, it’s about who’s LEFT
We need to look at a few things.
In some snags - you can use 100lb line matched with a 100lb rod, and still sometimes not be able to land your prize.
Why ? - because the snag allows the fish to apply leverage against your terminal tackle and " lever " the hook out of it’s mouth. You are then left with a snagged hook no matter what poundage of rod / line you are using.
On the other hand, with abundant snags, you also want to be able to quickly pull your prize away - so, a heavier poundage line / rod / reel will definitely help.
Another scenario is where you have so many lily pads that it is almost impossible to cast / retrieve by the bank. In such cases, FT’s recommendation of a long carp rod will be very useful. On my part I use this method almost like " jigging ", and because of the length, I also have a bit of room to play with when the fish get’s near.
Most things / techniques in fishing will be a compromise that you decide on - again, on my part, my choice would be a 8 - 12 lb set in clearer ponds, and a 14 - 20 lb in others. So far, this has served me very well for many years.
Would really like to hear other ideas - there is this private haruan pond with monsters inside, except that I can hardly see the water ! Hoping to get prepared in case I suddenly get an invitation. [:p]
Oops ! forgot - you asked for a recommendation.
The bulk of my pond fishing is done with my St Croix Premiers matched with Fin Nor Estima reels. They will cost you less than half your budget for a set - but personally, I do not see any reason to break my bank account any further for pond fishing for the types of fish that you are talking about [:D]
hehe…my favorite outfit..5’6 (4-20paun)rod…for pond fishing..6’6 for casting…for snags..i try to avoid it..but if no choice ..then 20paun line should be fine…
bro hardly can catch patin more than 7kg’s nowday in ponds…

RM1K is quite a big budget if you’re fishing mainly in paypond.
I believe your current outfits (i.e shimano baitrunner and rods) is good enough for most payponds.
Why don’t you do a bit more fishing to find out what you really like before ‘investing’ in your next set? Perhaps join the others in their next outing and exchange more ideas.
If you look at the recent CR on BSR, ultra light also can land 18kg plabuk.
Thanks guys for the advice and recommendation !
I think I better come clean [:(]. I was thinking actually getting this setup for those fishing competition. Kinda embarrass to tell…hehe. In those competition, there were hundreds of fisho fishing shoulder to shoulder. Each rod is sitting only 1 feet apart. When casting, lines will cross. So we have to very accurate when casting. And imagine when there is a hook up, lines will definitely tangle like meehoon. It will tangle even more lines if the fish is not reeled in faster. So, other fisho will swear and curse if we dont keep pumping and reel back. Some of them will just strike and break the line and the trophy fish is gone. Its like fishing in a snaggy pond actually
My current shimano baitrunner DL is only 2500 + 6’ bassterra EV 8-16lbs is ok during normal fishing time. Actually quite happy with this setup and no problem even with 5-10 kg plus patin/tongsan because I have enough time and space (not crowded). But I feel the rod could be a little too soft. Is a 7’ extra fast action rod which has a stiff tip better ? And also a reel with strong drag ? But I dont know how many kgs of drag is enough. Dont feel good if I bring a PE6 rod and a 10000 reel there lah, everybody will look at me hahaha
Sorry if I didnt give the whole picture earlier. Correct me if I’m wrong, do I need an extra fast action rod with stiff tip (not going to the extent of seafishing tackle) and a 2500-3000 reel with the strongest drag ? If so, what are the spec I need to look at ?
I do not participate in fishing competitions - but from what I have seen, decent equipment, but with full friendly mutual cooperation from those near you, is likely to be the better solution.
I would stick with something around the 3000 / 4000 series, even though I feel that your Shimano will be more than adequate.
If you really want to try to winch the fellas up, try cupping your spool ?
All the best in your competition - and keep us posted.[:)]
Correct Mike, those sitting beside/near will determine whether you will have fun or not that day. That’s why I only go together with a few friends sitting in a line (I choose the middle seat hahaha). And try to make friends around us. The majority are extremely friendly as they would also face the same situation if they hook up fish. We will reel back our lines when someone got hookups, and they will do the same next time we got hook ups. In general, most fisho are considerate people
But I wouldn’t feel good if I kena big fish and then play with it for 5-10 minutes. They cant cast out during that time. And also the fish will spook the area and no fish will come to the area for the next 1/2 or 1 hour. Worse is if I’m unlucky to meet an impatient fisho, then I may lose the chance of a lifetime.
The first time I went, I was shocked at how the competition runs. The lines were practically crossing other lines. Not 1 line, but 4-5 line crossing above your line. Then whenever there were hooked up, the buddies will shout “kiri kiri…kanan kanan…bagi laluan…jangan sembat…”. It was so funny. My line got tangle a few times. Then everybody will decide which line to cut. There was 1 time my line got tangled with a makcik’s line. And she say “you potong lah. Lelaki potong, perempuan tak payah potong” [:D] I lost about 1/3 of my spool line. It was different kind of fishing where you will see so many types of anglers in a day

WAR: it’s not about who’s RIGHT, it’s about who’s LEFT
For fishing competition:
Rod : 12-30lb upto 7’ should be enough. You may want to consider a jigging rod (and kill two birds with one stone)
Reel : 4500-6000 series, high gear ratio, lock the drag to the max
Line : mono 30-40 lb (cheaper if you have to cut away the tangle)
Fishing style : just strike and reel the fish in.
(and good luck in your future competition)
hehe…hmmm..yea lor…strike and reel…

Yea RK, like FiR3 TiG3R said, I may need a more sturdy rod for the application. On other occasion, I like going light too
StarTrek thanks for the pointer. 12-30 or 15-30 lbs and 6’-7’. I have phobia for seasick, so maybe not a jigging rod.
Saw that the baitrunner 2500 has 5kg of max drag. For 4000 size, it has a 7kg of max drag. Is the 2kg a significant difference ?
The max drag on a reel is to counter the pulling force of the fish, not the weight of the fish.
A 15kg fish does not weight 15kg in the water and may not have a strong pulling force (depends on the type of fish).
5kg or 7kg drag: Eer.., dunno leh… In all my fishing experience, never set max drag before (because never join fishing competition…)
A 4000-6000 series reel has a bigger spool and higher gear ratio, this combination allows you to reel in the fish faster as each crank of the handle draws in more line (compared to a 2500 series reel).
12-30 or 15-30 lb, somewhere around there la…
If you really just wanna ‘tarik’ the fish in, may want to consider 15-40/20-50lb single piece 6’ boat rod (Ugly stick only about RM250 there about)
correct me if i’m worng bro;s…if you set your drag too high..when the fish make the run..i have experience the hook snapped/straightned,ripped out of the fish’s mouth etc…maybe my technique was wrong…

he’s going for competition where it’s a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd. Cannot ‘play’ the fish, otherwise tangle here and there.
So, get strong hooks (2x,3x) and let the bending of the rod take some of the fish pulling pressure. And hope for the best (i.e. hope that the lip of the fish doesn’t get wrench out…OMG…).
hmm…maybe that’s why we don’t join these type of competition
OMG…bro…then its not competition…its not about competing with our skills..its about..who’s rod/reel is stronger…

Thanks startrek, I have a better idea now. Will do more research in the tackle shops now…
RK, actually the fishing competition is about how effective is your bait, knowing the location where the big fish are and some element of luck. Its all about “the bait of the day, presented at the right place at the right time”
And the second part of the competition is after fish on, the skill of reeling back the fish. And the right equipment is very helpful in the final dash to the line
The lip of bigger tongsan and patin is quite hard to penetrate. Actually we need to strike as hard as possible 1 or 2 times to make sure the hook is properly set
hmmm…competation is another area that i havent venture out…
