Rompin Sailfish Frenzy!

Hey guys. Just got back from Kuala Rompin for 3 days of sails fishing. Just wanna share our amazing experience. We were there for 3 days of fishing. This time 6 of us went for this trip. Jerry,Hennie,Leo,James, Phillip and Melvin. As usual we depart KL to K.rompin on friday evening to spend a night and the next day start fishing. As most of you know, the sailfish season off K.Rompin began every August till Nov.

Expectation was high as I have been calling our Boatmen Steven almost everyday one week before our departure date. He informed me that the sails are swimming happily in large numbers around K.Rompin water.

Day 1.

We shoot off to the fishing ground 8am sharp from the under renovation familiar rompin jetty. We notice that the sea was really calm. With only very mild waves. After 30 minutes of boatride, we reach the first spot to collect some live baits. Baitfish were not around in huge numbers and we have difficulty gathering enough bait for a day fishing. After about an hour, we decided to make a move to the sails spot after steven advice us we could fish for the sails and also gather some bait at the same time. When we reach our first spot, we were happily welcome by at least 30 to 40 sails swimming around the boat. James first bait out was taken within 5 Minutes. It was lost after fighting it for quite sometimes. No worries, we still have many around. Many hooks up occur and we did land 7 sails on day 1 with more than 15 hooks including one on popper by me. It was a thrilling experience seeing the sails chase after your popper and wham.. miss.. come back for it again…strike.. perfect hook up and the sheering run began. About 5pm we call it a day. Here is the pics.

Day 2.

To keep the story short.. day 2 was another fantastic day. Reach the fishing ground around 10 am..start fishing and many double and triple hook ups occur. We have many different mix variety a well. Like a lone ranger tengirri on live bait by leo and a huge mama todak. We had many takes on jigs and popper as well But all throw the hook after fighting it for about 10 seconds. Total sails landed for the day was 9 landed with about 17 hook ups. 1 Tenggiri on live bait, many kerisi and grouper range from 500 gram to about 1 kilo. 4 green eyes squid and a 2 arrow squid.

Day 3.

Last day of our trip. Was suppose to do some bottom action today but then the action was so good at the sails spot yesterday we decided to go out back there again. We can still fish for bottom fishes and drift for sails as well. The sea is quite rough today compare to the last 2 days we were fishing. Reach the sails spot.. first drift didn’t provide with anything. Was quite surprise. We procedeed to look for the sails. Only till about 10.20am did melvin hook up the first sails. I then went in front to pop for some sails after seeing the birds around.. Never did i expect a silver flash suddenly appear from the depth and whack my popper! I strike and it was a solid hook up. After a few runs, it was gaff. Is a tenggiri. My first tenggiri on poppers. Was very happy. Continue to pop.. suddenly another take..took a jump. I shouted dorado.. no mistake as it was my fav fish. It manage to unhook itself and took a dive.. was quite dissapointed. Then the action was slow.. as the bird depart the area and dunno fly where. Many huge todaks disturb our bait. We hang around for about an hour or so. Steven took us to another spot about 20 mins away. We drift out our live baits.. no take. Waited.. then steven took out his squid jig. First drop a green eye grab on it. We suddenly change into the sotong mode! Haha.. Everyone was dropping the squid jig..we caught about 5kg worth of squid that day with the biggest about 1 kilo. Leather jacket was caught as well and it taste superb. Total for 3rd day is 5 sails landed with 8 hook ups. Green eye squid about 5 kilo. Leather jacket 3 pieces. Numerous kerisi and groupers.

Second Tenggiri of the day on live Selar

Squid - 5 Kg (biggest about 1kg)
Groupers - About 10 pieces (range from 300 grams to 1kg)
Leather jacket - 3 pieces

Thats is the end of the report, hope you guys enjoy reading it. Cheers. Jerry

Wowwww…what a marvelous catch bro.
What’s the outfit like to fish those sailfish?

Thanks.. We were using PE3 rods and any reels above 4500 will be sufficient. Line will be braided line above 30lb.

Wonder how the ladies do their business on a boat like that?

Feeding fish if not getting any on rod and line, let them grow bigger to fish another day.

Marvelous catches mate !!..Bunch of mates were out there last weekend..and they had a thumpering time as well.2 days fishing, where 1st day is sailfishin n 2nd is jigging and popping/bottom. Results were fantastic…

Now is the best season to be taking out all your virgin lures and entice them. Best time for catching sails on fly !!..that be fun !!..

Good on you guys…i had a fantastic day trip too wit sky back in early june…where is the worst season to be there…we had 9 hook ups n landed 8 in 7 hours, could have been more if we were landing them faster, but on a 30lbs is a lil risky..ehehe..cheers

I think some are smaller some are average in size..but nowadays seldom see anything above 50kg..but they do fight alot stronger this season. My friend was spool twice on a shimano baitrunner. I was quite surprise of the first run when they normally stop at about 70 to 80m..but then now they easily take about 150m of line..

Izzy,
It does ring a bell on the alarming situation, the trawlers or wat so ever darn fishermens do occasionally net them ‘accidentally’ around the waters there. Nothing much they can do with but to sell them in market, if not mistaken for few RM per kg..and use them in our local ‘keropok lekor’ !!..sux isnt it…or probably the big ones are getting smarter !!..ehehe

Jerry,
Yeaps bro, even the japs are here. Have to agree that catching good size sailfish is way way cheaper than in costa rica, broome in Western Aussie,etc..Next year, a team of fly casting gurus, tournament champs and magazine writer from aussie will be here to tease the sails on fly !!..

Jerry bro,

I have no idea about that but knowing msia ringgit is so tiny !!! Youll be expecting some big bucks over in aussie for sure, lets say about rm5-10k cause aussie’s labor charges are sky high. Whereas in Costa rica,i really have no idea but i guess is about rm10k and above !
