DAY 1
Over the weekend, me and a couple of friends drove up to Rompin for a little fishing, with the fishing reports that the Diamond trevally’s, were in we went off with hopes of getting a piece of the action.
We left at about 5pm on Friday, the drive was uneventful, we got in about 11pm, met up with our boatman for the house keys had a bit of supper and head straight to the house to set up our gear and some shut eye…
On the first day, the weather looked pretty decent, with a wonderful sunshine and no wind, we were looking forward to a great day of fishing.
All of us were optimistic on the days out fishing sea.
As we approached the river mouth.. we noticed that all our optimism were to avail.
The seas were rough and choppy and getting out to sea was an arduous task.
With choppy seas, our task hopes of getting a good number of fish at the end of our rod and line had diminished…
With a whole day of jigging only hit 1 grouper around 2 - 3kg by my masterful kaki Ktang… that was to be our dinner… yummy… the rest of the catch for the day was pitiful…
As the day continued, we had some who had succumbed to mild seasickness and some who were just frustrated with the day…
Little did I know I would be given an opportunity to have one of the most exciting fight of my life…
Within minutes of discussions with the boat man and among us on how bad the day was, my Revo Inshore with 20lb color marked line & Tenryu Inshore Light set up… had a monstrous take… well it would feel and look like monstrous take as it was only a 12lb Inshore Light jigging rod, as the day was slow and my backside was itchy, I had just had to whack a piece of bait on it to see if we could catch anything.
As I pounced on the rod and started to fight this fellow,.. I soon realized that I was at a disadvantage, my rod was not match for this bugger… he was making 10m dashes at a go, at first I thought that it was a Cobia but this assumption diminished as it did not tire after 4 to five blistering runs… I was increasing the drag on every run but to no avail, I was not able to even make an impression on the fish… from the back of the boat the fish had me running up to the bow of the boat making its dirty run to the anchor line.
With the help of the boatman and also Ktang, we were able to avoid any unnecessary entanglement with the anchor rope, I found this fish to be fickle minded as it made another run right to the transom area of the boat, and we had to make another lets pass the rod to the back routine ….at this point I had 70m of line out on a rod that had no ability to muscle this fish up.
10 minutes into the fight, I was already mentally kicking myself silly, and wondering why I decided to use a 12lb rod …….. as the fight ensued I was able to bring the fish up to 20m from the boat… with this.. I felt victory is at hand….at last I will be able to confirm what had taken my bait and gave such an arduous struggle. As I kept pumping and reeling in the line I was 5 m from victory…… as the boatman and my fellow kakis advised I loosened the drag in anticipation on the final run….. and with that victory was mine… all I need to do was to take up 5 more meters of line…..before I could say fresh steamed fish for dinner …the fish decided to give me one last run….. a run for its life I would say… one big one, before it goes into the cooking pot… I was ready for it and so was the fish… with all its might it did gave its all …. And with that…….
I give u ….
A Straightened Hook…… KNNCCB……… the thrill of victory (for the fish) the agony of defeat (for me)… my only one consolation… the thrill of the fight…
No pain no gain, dont try dont know… muahahahahaha
