When having to lob a heavy dough covered coil over large distances, I could not avoid the once in a while " thwack ! " whenever the bail accidentally closed by itself. Hong all over the place, coil and hooks donated to the pond, and a genuine red face shown to all those nearby.
Went back to my old and trusted RYOBI ZESTER and the problem all but vanished because it had a gentle drag that was activated when you opened the bail fully.
Question - have been told that this feature can be found in the new Ryobi Artica’s and a few others within the Ryobi range. Does anybody know of other reels that have the same type of mechanism ?
Hooi - my Zester has a slight drag to stop the bail from moving around when I open the bail for casting. I believe that this prevents the bail from spinning ( and slamming shut ) during a strong cast / lob.
Yes, I also did not have any such problems of premature bail closing when I was doing normal casting - only now when I need to lob a comparatively heavy lump of dough / hong to get the distance.
OK - will go to the shops today to see whether any other reels have the same feature.[:)]
my 2 cents on this- it should be due to the mechanism in the bail design for lazy ppl like me, whereby the bail will auto closed when you turn the handle. when there is extra force to cast the heavy hong it will casue the handle to turn and wallaaa bail closed, this is what happened to me when casting hong for plabuk.
mbax - Yeah, I also think the same … and the irony is that the smoother the reel, the more likely that this will happen !
Yes, we can completely avoid this premature bail closing if you use your other hand to hold the bail when trying to lob heavy dough / hong, or, use a rubber band to stop the bail from unintentionally spinning, OR, go to the shops and risk spending more money ! [:D]
