Tackle Box have organized a trip to Maldives next March… Bro Riki, Nick, Irhamy, David Samuel, Pak Amin, Eddie Lim and my self have confirmed…
I guess.. from the above… Bro Riki is a first timer… I’m sure he have lots of questions about what to prepare for this trip…

That to wear… SPF 30++ fishing shirt with quit dry pants… and a good pair of polarized sun glass… a hat or cap, lots of sun block… hand glove…

This is also a very good way to dress up for party at Maldive…

I saw some of the secret weapon in Pak’s fly box… one of the pattern is Surf Candy… others are Clouser, Charlie, Big Deceiver in Flash material ( Pak say it’s call Pak amin’s Christmas tree.. )
Colour… urrrr… got pink, chart, olive, whole white with UV flash… ( base on my memory only…)
Some of Pak’s fly in the box… banyak besar… I guess that is for GT…
Makan… no worry, if you are going with Pak Amin… you will be putting on weight… cos Pak is a Dammmm good cook…!!!

You also need to tie some Merkin Crabs, bro.
If you see a B-I-G triggerfish tailing…and if you can stop your hands shaking long enough to tie on a Merkin’s crab…[:D] (sorry…no pics of the triggerfish tailing…hands shaking too much) [:D][:D]

You got to get close enough so you can cast without spooking it. If you can cast far, then you have an advantage.

You got to cast right on its nose, then leave it there, twitch it a little…

and IF it takes your fly, do a strip strike and just HANG ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!

OH ya…a good pair of wading boots is VERY VERY important. It’s a must have. And don’t listen to those people who tell you that dive booties are good enough. They are NOT! You need something with a firm sole, high cut so your ankles are protected. When you buy your pair of wading boots, get a pair which is one size up from your regular shoe size. Coz you also need to get a pair of neoprene socks. 2mm or 3mm is good enough. The socks will protect your feet from the sand that will inevitably find its way into your wading boots.

Fly Fishing is what fish are for!
Saltwater Fly Fishing… you will just melt into the scenery… crystal clear water… superb fine sand…blue blue sky… walking by the beach… searching tru the polarized sun glass… if I could see a mermaid… ( Mimpi aja…!!! Huui… bangun lah…!!! keep casting.. stop dreaming…!!! )
Actually… all these dream does happen in Maldives.. except for the mermaid…
It’s sign fishing game at the flats… you see the fish… you move in stealth.. pull out your fly lines… aim at the fish, and keep you eyes on it… 1st false cast.. 2nd false cast… fhuuuuuh… there the line shot out.. drop just a few feet from her nose… strip it fast.. she turn and… split second.. you feel an unexpected pull on the line… Hearts start beating hard, adrenalin flood your bloods… lines shot out from your stripping basket.. reels start scream..!!! Panicky, search for the line on the other end… what you can see … line is cutting tru the water.. A big black shadow at the end of the line…!!! a big GT..!!! Big GT…!!!
Suddenly… line loosen… Oh…!!! you are screaming…!!! DAMM..!!! SHxt…!!! all the curse..!!!
What to do… go back to fishing again… this time… you see the fish again… the story continue…
That is what so ‘SHIOK’… and enjoy…

The journey..
Flight from KLIA with Mas airline took about 3 hour 40 min to reach Male… upon reaching the airport, we will be welcome by the friendly captain and transfer to the mother boat with the unique water taxi… 1st night were spend on the mother boat…
The boat will be departure from the jetty early morning… at the speed of about 10-15 knot.. it took about 8 hours to reach Fadiffolu atoll on the northern… on the big and stable mother boat, the breakfast and lunch were served… Reached the first spot at around 3pm Maldivian time, we were ready to land on the island for our first evening FF session…
The rest of the 6 days.. we will be fishing from different islands, lunch normally served on the island.. by evening.. back to the mother boat for our dinner and carry on with the night event… jogging or bottom…
In the event if the weather are not permitted for FF…will cruise slowly along the reef area… time for some popping for the big GT…
Solid 6 days of FF, jigging, popping, spinning… and non stop of laughter and jokes on the deck after the dinner… what else who be more enjoy than this…
For any fist timer to Maldives, especially fly fishos,first thing is your fishing gear is impt. Start with wt #7 to #9 with a good drag reel. use either sinking tip or intermediate line with a 15lb to 40lb leader. as andrew mentioned a good pair of wading boots; stripping basket, polarized sun glasses, hat, sun block, camel bag or water bottle.
Maldives water has got GT, long nose emperor, trigger fish, parrot fish, all kinds of coral fish and of the course BONE fish.as for flies, only four types work well in maldives:
white crazy charlie; minnow clouser; lefty deceiver and any crab pattern. as for what colurs to use, it depends on colour of the seabed. From my observation it varies every year. My friend in maldives will let me know what the situation is like a month before my trip.
and last but not least, because weather now days is unpredictable practice casting into the headwind and galway cast or reverse cast.
