Sandakan Ox-eye Herring

It’s nearly 3 months and many trips later, I managed to find the elusive ox-eye herring in Sandakan Water. Although rather small in size, they’re equally or even more ferocious than their peers in Tawau.

So far, I had travelled to 4 river systems in Sandakan. 2 of them seem to have quite large population of ox-eye herring. Perhaps I need to look harder in the coming months,

Apart from the ox-eye herring (the local name is either Bulan-bulan of ikan berlobok), there’re others species such as Archer Fish, small Bara…cudas, and groupers to entertain and keep you busy.

It looks like Sandakan is slowly revealing her secret…

very nice pics i must say[:)]

may i ask what camera setup did u use?

I'm still searching for good areas. If you are interested, just let me know......provided the tide and weather permitted.....

Hi…which part of Sandakan did you catch that fish? btw, is it a freshwater or saltwater fish?

These are estuarine species. We will find them in rivers Like Sg. Seguntor and Sg. Sepilok

did you fish there from the riverbank or on a boat?

Mostly, we do sight casting. You need a boat, and a good boat man. Part of the fun or rather frustration is to get into casting distance. This fish is first rate fighter, but poor eating quality. We should do something to preserve them. They will be good for eco-tourism.

yeah…there are many interesting fishing spots in Sandakan. Have you heard of Sg Jepun. It’s at the end of the road in Jalan Sulaiman. My friend caught mangrove jack there and I caught some stone fish.

Are you from Sandakan?
No, I’ve not heard about this Sg. Jepun. Is there any good for tarpon fishing?

Yes, I’m from Sandakan.I’m not sure where to find that kind of fish in Sandakan. Maybe you can try Sungai Kayu. I’ve heard the mangrove jack and selongsong ( what do you call that fish in English?? ) there are quite big. Are you an ox eye herring hunter? heheheheee… why do you ike to catch them? Is that your targetted fish everytime you go fishing?

If I’m not mistaken, ikan selongsong should be Siakap in West malaysia. Yes, I like to entangle with ox-eye herring or bulan-bulan. This fish has no commercial value, but a good fighter.I did catch them in West Malaysia before by accident, and saw a good speciment of about 30inches caught by my friend near Pulau Rimau in Mersing many years back.We were bottom fishing at night near this island and that ox-eye herring took his bait.

I started fishing for this species seriously when I was in Tawau. There are bigger speciment out there. This is a species that’s difficult to hook, and stayed hooked. It will do lots of jumping if pressured. It’s lots of fun and spectacular to watch acrobatic, but it can be dangerous at times when the lure flew straight back at you.

Bulan bulan may not have commercial value, but it may be one of the species that will boost our eco tourisim.

If you are going to hunt for bulan bulan again, inform me please. I’m quite interested to learn the feel of catching a bulan bulan. BTW, I’m still a beginner in casting and popping. I need to practice and learn more.

Yes, that’s the place, Mayong. How did you fish there? Bottom? Popping? Casting? My friends and I are always popping in ‘tembok’ for the past few weeks. Trying to get more people fish with artificial lure.
