Sepat and Puyu on fly

Hi Guys,

I’m interested in tempting some Puyu or Sepat using small drys or nymphs. Can anyone kindly point me to some areas, preferably not too far from the Klang or Port Klang area? Company would be most welcome.[:)] Would also like to try Tenkara on them.[:)] … many thanks.

Haha, just had a quick glanc at the Bahasa section and found lots of info on Sepat and Puyu fishing … and looks like the best places are not too far from where I am.[:I]…like Cikgu’s hometown in Tg. Karang.[:)]

So KK can help or not?

Good Morning Sifu,

There are many places in Port Klang area with puyu and sepat. One of my favourite spot i hunt for puyu/sepat is at Pulau Indah, behind the hawker stall at the entrance road to Kampung Sg Kembung/Sg Nipah(after Starcruise terminal). The other spot is at the entrance road to Kg Delek where you fish for tarpon(you can see lots of kids fishing there in evening)…[:D]

Okay Jerry, long time no see, … but must get response from Taikor first.[:)]

puyu is easy to catch on dries or nymph and even gugler…but sepat is another story. We have 2 local sepat in our water, they eat minute filamentous algaes and detritus(???)…long greeny algae flies on #20 hook???

Hi Sild and PidauS,

I’m starting to take a keener interest in our smaller local species on fly since getting interested in Tenkara.

Tenkara is great for the smaller species, esp. in our hill streams. After the small Tengas Daun, the Temperas and Seluangs, the next step is naturally our own “warm water” Puyus and Sepats.

And yes, PidauS, I sometimes mentally go back to the good days around the paddy fields and swamps of B’woth., Kepala Batas and Simpang Ampat where I grew up … also the canals in the coconut plantations of Prai … these places were full of Sepats, Puyu, fighting fishes … and cobras too.[:D]

Thanks Sild, for the suggestion of algae flies. I have tried them (quite unsuccessfully) for Belanaks [:(] … perhaps they will work better with them Ronggeng fellas?[:D]

Kurau King was kind enough this morning to show me a couple of spots in Port Klang where Puyus thrive … on roti canai[:)]… will suss them out this weekend …will also try a few spots around the rural longkangs of Pulau Indah.

yup me also like the tenkara style..simplicity…
but sometime i cant get to used to it…cuz i always act to strip the line due to fly fishing with reel..so i kinda leave it and go back to fly fishing…but still tenkara is fun to fish…i dont have any tenkara fly rod(its to expensive for me)..so i used a telescopic that used to fish udang…hahahaha…

Yes, Tenkara is fun in its simplicity… I started with a 12 ft. telescopic rod, catching small peekoks with goldheads in the subang lake in the good old days [:D] … had big debates with Ron Looi over his promotion of aliens then.[:D]
Then there were postings in the S’pore fly forum on Japanese fly fishing and Tenkara that got me interested… finally came Tenkara USA last year…now I’m hooked.[:D]

Must fish with you one day Bro.

Its a great pleasure to have new friends and thats why we called it FISHING… [:D][8D]

Make us of those good graphite telescopic poles of various length, you only have to fix the cork handle. Problems solved.

Aiyoo Tom,

These are specialist rods lah [;)]. I have used the normal telescopics and even converted a 3pc. double handed 6 wt. fly blank to use as a Tenkara rod. However, the makeup is totally different…too stiff, too heavy, too fast action…etc.

Now a real Tenkara rod … either 5:5 or 6:4 action, light and strong, telescopes down to 2 ft…etc.. nothing compares with the real deal.[:D]

I’m told by a Japanese tenkara man that he thinks Daiwa Tenkara rods can be found in Malaysia…know anything about this?

So Tony, how did you fared on the puyu and sepat?

Went to the longkangs of Pulau Indah yesterday, burleyed with rice as advised by KK. They were there alright,(mainly Puyus) but catching them with flies was another thing.[:(] … had to go after 1/2 hour …must try again soon.

Apart from fly fishing, I’m told the best bait (on #22 sized hooks) are eggs of Kerengas. True?

<><ICHTUS><>

grasshoppers and baby tebuan is also good mate. But you don’t want to kill another organism to catch others kan.
