Pak Amin would like to know what is this ‘sharing knowledge’ that pops up very often in this forum?
Example:
Will any instructor travel out of his home base to teach FOC?
I can share all my fly fishing experience and knowledge FOC to any malaysian (or anyone living outside of singapore) who is willing to come down to singapore and spend three days with me - at his own expense.
What my understanding is knowledge will never come freely, there is always a price to pay, be it money or time.
Just like the recent fly tying session I gave at Tacklebox. Yes the instructions was free, but did you not have to make time to come down? did you not have to buy fly tying materials from TB to go home and try it out? Or did you not have to buy magazines, books or videos to read and learn more? You googled on the internet? Need a computer and internet access? All for free?
So far, only one guy came down on his accord and spend time with me to learn fly casting and fly tying. I’m proud of him because he made the time to do so. As a reward I even built him a rod.
Pak Amin
First of all i must agreed with Pak Amin.
lessons are Never Free…one way or another you have to pay.
i have heard all kind of stories …but i rather chew them than to sallow them.
one of the reason why i dont teach is i know the kind crap people are going to say…i mean why waste my time, i dont get anything out of it.
as for Pak Amin …i rather stay home then to travel and give FOC lesson…why should i, rather why should he?..what will he get at the end of it?
if i were you pak amin i will charge them..after all you too had to pay for gaining your knowlegde. people will take it for granted when something comes free.

I’m sorry… I do not get this. Are u saying u come down to Malaysia solely for teaching people fly fishing or simply meeting up with friends & go fishing? I mean, if u’re specially invited by some people who ask you to teach them fly fishing, charge them by all means. I would do the same.
But if u’re gonna be here any other way, why can’t u do some stuff pro bono? U don’t lose anything but in fact u may gain some friendships. Yup, u did some fly tying classes, (which I didn’t manage to attend anyway), but I guess u can’t charge them here (correct me if I’m wrong) because u’re not FFF-certified as a fly-tier but in fact a fly-caster.
What I’m saying is, try getting to know the people… the ‘rakyat’ of fly fishing. Not all of them are doctors, engineers or football players. And most of the time they can’t even afford to pay for entry level SA fly line let alone your rate. Plus, they have to fork out more for all the stuff u mentioned above. But one thing I can tell u - they really really love fly fishing and I guess u’re the best candidate to teach & reach them. Because if they come to me for lessons, sure hancur one (eventho it’s free)! Hahaha… [:p]
So Pak Amin, I understand & realise not everything is free. And I totally understand & realise too that u’ve done huge monetary sacrifice to get your certificate. But what the ‘some things’ u can afford to ‘make free’, please make them free. Maybe not for me… but for the others who really really need them. I’m very sure if u search deep enough for whats left of ur humble-ness, u can do it. Cheers. [;)]

rikirahman: you don’t know me… you really, really, really don’t know me. When I’m up in KL, let’s have teh tarik and get to know each other okay?
Salaam
Pak Amin
Bro Riki…to be fair, many times Pak Amin have come down to teach fly casting, mostly at his own expense. I know because I’ve attended quite a few of those myself. And a lot of those times, it wasn’t to go fishing. Meet up with friends, of course, definitely. But the main reason he came down was the fly casting clinic.
AFFM pro-tem committee meetings, he would come down JUST to attend the meetings and to give advise. Next day he would be off back to Singapore. Not a cent was paid to him to cover any expenses, and neither did he ask for anything. What does he stand to gain from this? NOTHING, as far as I know. As a foreigner, he cannot even sit on the committee of the club when the club is formed. In contrast, local fly fisher on the committee can’t even be bothered to attend these same meetings.
I understand where Pak Amin is coming from. Go overseas…a certified fly casting instructor will charge u up to USD150 an hour for classes. There was one time he wanted to charge RM50 to attend his fly casting clinic…to cover his travel and accommodation expenses. People were complaining. Is it not worth RM50 to attend a fly casting clinic by an FFF certified instructor? And is it wrong to charge to recover expenses incurred?
I know economy in Malaysia is not great…but not everyone is as poor as they make themselves out to be. They just want everything for FREE.
Let’s take Oliver Edwards. I do not know if he is FFF CERTIFIED but he is certainly well known as a master fly tyer. As we agreed yesterday, certification is worthless if the guy don’t have the proper skillset and can’t teach properly. I’ve heard that he charges up to USD300-400 per hour for one-to-one session with him.
Pak Amin came down to teach fly tying, to share his knowledge with the local fly tyers FREE OF CHARGE. Certified? No. Qualified? DEFINITELY.

I have to say this in support of Pak Amin. (penang fly fishos, please correct me if you disagree)
Pak Amin has made a few trips to Penang since I and many friends of mine in particular the ever so adventurous longkang gang started fly fishing. And in all the trips, Pak Amin has come to fish with us and more importantly, he imparted knowledge to us without us even having to ask him. Ever so helpful he was that each time he saw us doing something wrong he would just come next to ask and say “bang, your casting will be better if you do this or that… Let me show you” Yes he even lowers himself by calling us “bang” and we’re a few generations younger than Pak Amin.
Pak Amin gives us his flies instead of showing us how to tie them coz there is usually no time nor facilities to teach us how to tie the flies. But this coming trip I believe he will be bringing his equipment up to Penang to show us how to tie flies.
Pak Amin has done all the above and my fellow fly fishing buddies can confirm that. He has never asked for a single cent from us so in appreciation, we buy him a Teh Ais here and there and usually all chip in to buy Pak dinner in appreciation of his free classes. What comes from the heart is returned also from the heart.
I would say that a lot of Fly Fishers in Penang have improved both their casting skills as well as other aspects of fly fishing from Pak Amin’s trips to Penang and on behalf of the Fly Fishers who have fished with Pak, I say a big thank you to you!
Pak, please do not be discouraged by a few negative comments and if there are any misunderstandings, it could be cleared over a Teh Tarik, be it in Arab Street, Tacklebox, Penang or elsewhere.
All the sifu’s,
I’ve been Pak Amin casting clinique, and seen andrew cast, man,it’s beautiful and i shall remind everyone again, this 2 people, they got MAGIC!!!Those days,i can’t even cast 30 feet not to mention Pak Amin cast with single haul close to 50 feet i think, with only one teh tarik session in Hassan, the knowledge i gain i guess worth more the RM500 already,[:I][:I][:I]
i sure wanna join this teh tarik-ing event [^][;)]

Come to think about it, I also must thank the following guys for sharing Fly Fishing with me since this is the sharing knowledge thread :
Haji Syed : for getting me started on FF
Lanun and Firetiger : for their tips and free flies
Evergreen, Shahril & Irhamy gang for bringing stuff down from tacklebox for me and for their tips especially Irhamy’s famous pellet fly.
Nick : for poisoning me
Andrew, Ben Foo and Dr. Ling for their casting instruction and advice
Dron : For his free flies
My fishing buddies like Nique, Melvin, Choo, Farkson, Lato and the rest for fishing with me and not laughing when I hook on to a dog;)
And how could I forget Baba : thanks for the free flies, jokes and for making me look good when you do not haul up any fish when you’re fishing next to me ! ! !
I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for letting me be part of your fly fishing community and hope to fish more with all of you guys more often.

Riki, as all three of us (You, me and bro Alpocot) realised during our meeting yesterday, it’s all a misinterpretation and misunderstanding. If all of us can sit down and talk, all should be well.
As to what you said, what we got, you haven’t encountered from Pak Amin. Like I said yesterday, where are you guys when Pak comes down for casting clinic and fly tying clinics? You can’t gain the knowledge if you’re not around bro.
OK lah…talk it out between the two of you and hope things get settled. After all, we ALL want the same thing… to up the level of fly fishing in this country. We can get there in different ways and methods, but why not do it TOGETHER.

You guys are true gentlemen for handling these disputes over a teh tarik. I’m not sure if I would be able to keep my cool if I was faced in a similar situation. I guess I have a lot to learn from you guys on becoming Gentlemen Fly Fishers.

It’s easy bro when it’s not personal attack. And it never was. [:D]
We just have difference of opinion. And we just debating the issue. I apologise for losing my cool…that was wrong. But I would rather discuss an issue rather than have all the trash talk.
Trash talking is fine but it has its place.
