ben,
oi don say i give tips la..KNN. later kena ‘maki’ heheheh… say i give flies enuff. i got no tips. just got poison, which i’m glad to share with my friends. i share what i know, and if what i know is wrong, then kindly correct me. my mistakes are for all to see & judge. i learn from there and so forth. if u can’t take criticisms, then u cannot proceed. if u can take criticisms, but do not work on the flaws, then u stagnate.

WAR: it’s not about who’s RIGHT, it’s about who’s LEFT

your tips pretty good also lar. Don’t be modest.

Salam Pak,

Would like to take this topic to discuss about tdifferent material, tying and patterns… boleh tak Pak…?

Since this thread is about sharing knowledge of fly fishing, there’s a good lesson on learning the double haul by Joan Wulff in the latest Midcurrent Newsletter at www.midcurrent.com

You may have to register, but its worth taking the trouble…enjoy.

<><ICHTUS><>

Since Tonywee have started on the double hauling casting…

May be it’s good we could discuss about other casting style here too…

Joan Wulff is a great fly fisher la.. Bought the dvd a tacklebox after watching it, poison me a lot la in fly fishing.. That what inspired me to try fly fishing a lot more.. After learning how to tie fly, got more poison there.. hehehe… Thanks to all the people in MFN here who help me a lot in flyfishing…

Tips from www.midcurrent.com

You can make a rod’s action “slower” by overlining the rod with a fly line rated one size higher. Overlining rods often helps beginners get a better feel for when a rod loads. It can also help when casting larger, bulkier flies.

Also good if you are nymph fishing with 2 nymphs and want to open up the loop a bit to avoid tangles.

You are most welcome Razor,

Got the latest issue of Fly Fisherman’s… which comes with a little supplement book: 101 tips from the experts. To those who don’t have the magazine… I will post some good tips from the books…

This is some tips from Bob Clouser;

  • Roll cast a sinking line to the surface so it is straight before beginning your backcast.

  • Prevent tangles by casting around in a half circle, Make a low, slow backcast sideways and come forward with a vertical cast aimed above eye level. Think of pulling the line around the inside of a horse shoe turned on its side. This cast is sometimes called a Belgian or Elliptical cast.

  • Open your loops by speeding up and stopping your stroke over a long distance. Forget those tight, dry-fly loops. Slow down your casting stroke. Don’t false cast at all if possible.

  • Water haul sinking lines; don’t false-cast them. For the single water haul, roll cast the sinking line to the surface. Water tension loads the rod and set up a good backcast. Make your backcast, shooting line if you want, and present the fly on your forward cast.

  • Watch your overhang. Overhang, the amount of running line outside of your tip guide, is critical when casting shooting heads. Too much overhang cause shock wave in your line and poor cast. Too little overhang robs you of distance. Start with only the shooting head outside your rod tip and keep the thin running line in the line guide. Gradually use more overhang until you determine the proper amount for best loop shape and distance.

What Tonywee saying is correct.

As per the tips from Charles Meck for tandem flies;
Tandem flies, also called multiple-fly rigs, are a versatile way to cover different depths in the water column, match several types of food at the same time, or give fish the option of different colours, shapes, and sizes of flies to determine which one they prefer.

By casting two or three flies at once requires some adjustments.

  • Cast open loops. Forget the tight loops that everyone talks about. Open up your loops by widening your stroke and pointing your thumb at the target when you stop the rod.

  • Cast around in a circle. Flies collide when you cast in a straight back-and forth motion. Instead, begin your backcast at an angle at the side and bring your forward cast over your right shoulder ( if you are a right-handed caster).

Tips from Lefty Kreh; Saltwater Travel Tips

  • Read as much as you can about your destination online, in magazines or books.

  • Contact the locals, Before you make firm plans, call the guide, out-fitter, or lodge you are fishing with and get updates on conditions.

  • Do your research. Ask guides and lodges for a list of references and call their references. Good guides should have a long list, not just a few names. Ask others who have fished the location who the best guides are. and try to get those guides. request top guides in advance.

  • Travel during the best times. Many fly fishing destinations have peak periods of prime fishing. Plan to go at those times.
