I don’t own this reel but I do a lot of pitching and flipping. The MGFV is actually a flipping/pitching version of the normal core 100. as you can probably tell from the pictures, the MGFV has a Quick fire like thumb bar for quick engaging and disengaging. Another different component is the main gear. the normal core 100 has a lighter aluminium alloy HEG main gear whilst the 100MGFV has a stronger heavier brass HEG main gear for flipping/pitching application. Personally, I do not see the significant gain in advantage of a flipping specific reel. I flip and pitch just as well with non-flipping version baitcasters. if you fish with reaction baits and do a lot of distance casting for most of the time, i’d avoid the MGFV and go for the lighter Core 100. Else, if you do a lot of flipping and pitching, the 100MGFV is the reel for you. [;)]
Tougher reels are usually made of denser materials hence they are heavier. if you don’t really pitch or flip with 60lb braided line most of the time when you’re fishing, the additional weight of a “tougher reel” doesn’t justify the excess weight. Plus, if you do only normal casting for most of the time, the new Quick Fire thumb-bar of the Core 100MGFV isn’t ideal, so to speak. if all you’re looking for is a “tougher reel”, any aluminum body baitcaster with phosphor broze main gear and pinion gear is even better than the Core 100MGFV in terms of stiffness. Some good examples: Alphas 103 (purple model only), USDM Sol, all Zillions (not sure about the HLC), Scorpion, Met XT and many others…
Personally, I have a ZDV which is one of the toughest baitcasting reels out there many aspects. Compared to the reels I use normally, it’s like holding a brick. But, it’s been such a long since I last fish with it and I can’t remember [:D]
then get a conquest la bro!!! very highly valued by tackletour… n calcutta are traditionally built like a tank, dun think it will fare any worst than any low profile anyday… as beautiful to look at as it’s performance!
Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you
