A buddy wanted to offload his Shimano Navi 8000 on the cheap, it’s new with no sign of use, wondering whether it’d be a suitable spinning match up for my 13’ cap ayam rod I am using for the beach/rocks? In my hands the reel feels slightly on the heavy side.
Can anyone advise? I only fish off the jetty, and off the beach. Strictly no deepsea stuff.

oops … there it goes again!
Very sorry me hv very limited knowledge with spinning reel for surf. What I personally emphasized when buying a spinning for surf are,
Long & Deep Spool, which is specifically design for Surf fishing
Reel weight less than 500g, the lighter the better

Retriving Speed higher than 4.1:1 ratio
Drag anything above 5kg should be sufficient.

[/quote]Onn,
Just to correct a little bit…as for point 1) I think it should be large, long and shallow spool lah, right?
nabghani,
Generally all spinning reels which are fairly large can be used for surf fishing.
I’ve even used the Penn 9500 (big mama) after watching some of the Australian surf angler using it…but it’s really heavy and not good for distance.
Like Onn said, the ideal reel basically should be light and with the spool specs as mentioned above.
Mind you, smaller spinning reels are usually for ultralight fishing and can easily be damaged if used for surf fishing especially in snaggy areas. Retrieving is also a torture and not to mention line capacity…you’ll definitely cry if you happen to hook a ray..he he.
As for the rod, don’t lah say “cap ayam”, do you know that my heaviest catch on my Zziplex is only 10 kg so far and Onn’s best catch is only 11 kg on his numerous UK rods.
Most of the trophy fish are caught on cap ayam rod only, even in our group…en rahim @ selby, his best catch is a 16 kg ray on “cap ayam” rod what!
…but of course distance casting is another story lah!
Spinning reels for surf fishing e.g. like Daiwa Cross Cast model 5000/5500/6000, Shimano Bulleye 7060/7100,PA Prosurf and PA Spin Power,INTERESSE ENTOU XT 3080/3100 all with deep type spool la.
nazeri…if i may…besides the technical analysis shared by the seasoned surfcasters here..myself in particular who always switched between the multiplier and spinning reels on my surf rods would like to share with you some lights on the issue. If you feel uncomfortable with the reel i.e. felt that is is heavy then you should reconsider matching it with your rod. However sometimes this are issues at the first sight…use it for a few times with appropriate matching of tackle eg lead’ lines etc and you would discover whether it suit to your taste..nonetheless as mentioned by bro onn and aznaff a deep spool will limit your drawings of lines when you cast out as long and shallow spool is indeed more forgiving in this matter. But mind you…some rays were hooked with shorter rods that casts shorter distances.
While the general consensus of using surf rods is to cast out as far as you can..accurate guess of a fish zone will help you increase you catch in quantity or size. Using longs rods on rocky and snaggy areas will help you fend offthe fish from diving into the snags. A good and stong reel will also be very helpful but this is very subjective as many anglers with budget reels and rods still manage to conquer the jerk at the other end.
However if the price of the reel is really a steal just grab it man. Probably one day when you decided to fish off shore you do not have to break the bank to buy a similar stock..alternatively you could also re sell it at a profit? But at the end of the day as long as you feel good then your choice as encik rahim has quoted…is “exclusively yours”
Thanks all for the input … I’ll pick up the Navi 8000. Initially, I was thinking Alvey 500 might do the job but having just got one, I found nothing winds the line onto the spool better than a spinning reel/overheads.
