Shimano Scorpion 1001XT

bro nyamaoan,

how are you doing? thanks for the info…sorry its not CQ50,
It is actually Calcutta 50…sorry for the confusion.
I have got an offer for cal50 about rm 610.

What do you think? should I go for that(cal50) or scorpion xt?
I cant afford CQ at the moment.

bro TJS,
so definitely scorpion is better from your opinion?
actually the reason I wanted to buy another reel is for small lures(for PB’s)plus sometimes sebarau and toman.
One more question, from my understanding rod & reel do play an important role if I would like to cast small lures?
It’s the reel or the rod has the important role for small lures? or both

sorry for asking silly question. am still noob in fishing world.

bro nyamaoan & TJS,

when wanna go fishing? can I join(learn from both of you sifu)?

both are equally important and crucial tomaxx bro, it’s increasingly more critical if tossing lighter weight lure is your target…

try to get at least a highly recommended and well known rod for that purpose. lighter rods esp for bc are quite scarce but not impossible to find either. but for tat sort of purpose, tat’s what u must get ready to face. alternatively you could source a good blank or spinning rod and convert it to casting rod

is cal50 is a extremely good reel… for the benefit of doubt, if there’s only one reel i’ll be allowed to own and fish with, that will be none other than my cal51, period… however if casting lighter lures is on your mind, by all means go for the more refined scorpion…

both are great reels, however they are good at very different things, for lighter lures, my cal51 could only go tat far as to cast mini fatrap, bout 3-4 grams nicely. after tat it wont work anymore. it’s like comparing between the choice of AK47 or M16 for your standard weapon, if u looking for a crude, functionable, durable and legendary reliability, go for the AK aka cal50, if modern, finness and spaceage choose the other… lets not forget bout all the above aspect is further determined by each and every individuals, i’m just viewing my opinion bro

i fish almost everyday… just now, and later i’ll be fishing too… hehe… anytime mate just get a venue and i’ll try to attend… but don’t call me sifu as i’m still novice and learning… see my nick heheh

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

or look for conquest 50/51s (shallow spool). hehe. definitely can cast light lures very well too.

both rod n reel important. have to work hard to find the right rod.
honestly speaking, locating the right rod is usually more difficult than it is to locate the right reel.

hmm.. dun fish as much these days. busy. maybe only once or twice a month.
u wanna fish, look up tjs, he probably fishes more than anybody else on this forum. haha.
if he’s not in uni or eating or sleeping, then he’s fishing. i think he fishes more than 40 hours per week! haha.

btw… no sifu here. most ppl i fish with are more experienced than me. i’m just learning.

Anybody has sampled Cardiff 50/51DC ? This is supposedly the DC version of CQ50/51 .

Jon .

Hi sportfisherman bro,

check the link below, it’s a review on your said cardiff 50/51 dc. too bad i don’t own it or handle it myself on the field so i have no say on it… what to do… so expensive! i would rather take a PX68 anyday since it can hold more line with all the refinement on light lure casting and every angle of it hold as much ethusiasm as a cardiff dc does, altho i dislike daiwa so much

kao lui? i think u too busy tackling fish la. haha.

cq51? no money la. saving, saving.
but now i thinking of the cq51s la. shallow spool.
px68 also on my mind.
two very different reels, especially line capacity. but both meant for finesse.

bro tjs & nyamaoan,

thanks for the info.
will see how, still have to survey more on the reel selection. anyway will update you guys on what reel i bought.

bro nyamaon,
you know what is the price for cq51s?
cq51s is left handle?

yup… any shimano bc reels size ends with 1 is left handed, ie: 51, 101, 1501, 1001 etc

lol nyamaoan bro, get the cardiff dc la haiyo so simple… shallow spool as shallow as the 51s mahhh hahhahha

Look at the raving review on Tackle Tour : http://tackletour.com/reviewscorpion1001xt.html

good reel heh… told ya!!!

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

yeah, fantastic reel. Just a little pricy … but what’s not pricy from Shimano and Daiwa nowadays … even ABU’s following suit with thier Revos and Neos.

Tempted to bring it to FV this weekend for a casting work out.

not very expensive compared to daiwa… plus the performance and ergonomics generally way surpassed daiwa

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

depending on model and range, daiwa and shimano pricing is comparative, par for the course.

yes, relatively pricey, but ‘yat farn chien, yat farn for’

i’d say daiwas are more robust whereas the shimanos need extra TLC
many prefer to ‘feel’ something working whereas shimano smoothness feels like there’s … nothing … there, which many also like, effortless, frictionless … some say, toy-like

to each their own preference … no hard and fast rule, no right or wrong in this respect

i have abu, shimano and daiwa, and penn spinning reels … all have done their fair share of work … all are smooth … but the individual feel is different.

allow me to digress further:
a friend taught me a trick/test his mentors shared with him: to test whether a spinning reel is as smooth as claimed -
a)turn its handle enough to get it moving on its own momentum
b)then move the reel to get that handle to continue to spin (a little somewhat like getting the liquid in a mug to move faster, tight and controlled)
the shimano and daiwa: no prob, almost effortless once you’ve caught it
the abu: took some effort
the penn: no go

TJS. can you let me know the details (blank, handle, split grip measurements, etc.) of your custom build rod featured in this thread? Thanks. [;)]

The one in the pic no longer exist… it’s been stripped and rebuilt again…

So now it’s spiral wrapped. the reel seat is 8.5 inch from the butt. Front cork grip had been exchanged with 2.5inch crosslock grip(previously in pic is 1 inch foregrip with regular reel seat). Rear cork length and butt cork length is 4 inch and 3.5inch respectively

Rod is G.Loomis Crankbait Bronze 8-14lb, 6foot6. Forgot the other spec and model number but i think a click online should be able to find it. i think it should be CB783 or CB883 or something like that

And oh btw the previous reel seat is fuji ACS, didnt like it so now i change to the more traditional fuji ECS. Guides would be Fuji SIC, 9 pcs. Spiral.

Once my computer and internet are fixed i’ll try to post up the pic of the redone rod…

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

TJS, do share how spiral-/acid-wrapped rod fare compared with conventional
Pros … cons … for better or for worse … [:p]

TJS,
Thanks for the info. Please send me some close up pics of the one in this particular thread by email. Also, i’m curious to know how the new build looks like, please send me some pics if you have them too. Thanks in advanced [;)]
