Shrimp fly

Hey there,

Don’t really have an agenda in posting this, just thought forum members might be interested in it. No name for the fly, I suppose “shrimp fly” or something would be fine

Been messing about with the tail arrangement and trying to fine tune balance of the fly - once its correct, the fly will move forward in the water as it sinks much like a prawn swimming forward, and you can strip it in short bursts like a fleeing prawn. Unfortunately, hasn’t been field tested :frowning:

SOrry bout the blur photos too…not enough DOF whilst taking the shots.

Nice realistic looking fly wylee. Whats the receipe?..materials used and tying sequence? Have you thot of employing some shiny material on th body or as feelers?

<><ICHTUS><>

TQ

Tying it is pretty simple:

Material:

  1. 5 Minute clear epoxy
  2. Colouring
  3. Marabou or similar wavy material
  4. Nylon
  5. Marker pens
  6. CD softcovers
  7. Deer hair or suitable ‘shapeable’ material

Steps:

  1. Cut the tail section first. It should be shaped like an elongated heart. Fold it in half lengthwise to put a crease in the tail. This is to make it move better in the water, e.g. like a hydrovane. Seems to aid in the prawn moving forward while sinking. Use a marker pen to colour the edges of the tail only.

  2. Next, make the nylon eyes and make lots of them for the future. Do this by melting some heavy gauge nylon over a flame, letting the nylon ball up and set. Once that is done, use your marker pen and colour it to your liking. Once that is done, dip the whole affair in some epoxy to protect the ink.

  3. Build up a layer or two of thread on the body and move from the eye to the gape.

  4. Once at the gape, tie in the deer hair and build up the head shape of the shrimp. You will need to spin the deer hair here.

  5. Use some suitable glue, my favourite is Uhuglue, and build up the head shape by gluing loose hairs together and shape it with your fingers. This is to represent the carapace and rostrum of the shrimp.

  6. Start tying the thread back towards the eye, all the while adding the marabou along the entire length. This is to match the shrimps legs, or pleopods.

  7. Tie in the tail section on the underside of the hook. Don’t worry if it looks unnatural, because the tail will be given a slight angle of bend once you tie your leader on. Since the tail lies flat to the hook, the leader will cause it to bend downwards. Once again, this should contribute to the swimming forward effect.

  8. Using the epoxy, build up a short layer. Don’t put all of the epoxy on at once, it just won’t stay there unless you rotate it by hand for some time. And don’t breathe in the fumes

  9. Once the first layer has set quite a bit, stick on the nylon eyes and let it dry some more.

  10. Finally, build up the final layer of epoxy and build the body to what a shrimp looks like.

I apologise for not having any pics yet. Just haven’t had the time  Also, I have yet to hit on the correct procedure or formula to make the prawn swim forwards - its hit and miss with some of them swimming correctly and some not. Guess its a weight distribution and tail alignment thing.

With regards to the shiny material, I did consider it but the epoxy itself is pretty shiny (imagine an oil slick and the rainbow colours, several times lesser), and I didn’t want to add any more stringy thingys that might interfere with the swim.

Cheers!

Well, will work on getting pics up.

Good Day,

Well done! I like it a lot… and am sure the fish will too!

Christopher

Nice!! i really wanna try this if given a chance..[:D]

Hi wylee,

The shrimp fly looks fine indeed. I guess looking forward we will see many more flies going the paul whillock’s way.

I just wonder why the fly has not been field tested though. Count me in if you need someone to try it out[;)]

how about tying a shrimp fly Pak Amin’s style?[:D]

I have tried tying a shrimp fly by using epoxy and CD cover but I find it is kinda difficult.. [xx(]
So, instead of using epoxy, I am better of tying a shrimp fly using Craft Fur. [;)]

fisheR,

The shrimp fly can be tied with hook point pointing up or not? Anybody tried? Afraid if hook down then we may lose more flies to the snag rather than fish. Mahal loh[:D].

Good to know that you guys have interest in this shrimp fly. You can tie in any manner you want - hook facing up or down does not matter. What is important is that the ‘fly must swim’ in the right position and not upside down. Try to study and understand the shrimp behaviour, which you can do so at an aquarium shop. Another important thing to note is to use the right colours, which play a very importnat part.
Cheers

Chris,

I picked it up from Pak Amin, his shrimp fly which was published in the R&L fishing magazine a couple of months back. He’s the ‘sifu’.. I just copied. [:D]
But it took me a few times of trial and error to get it right thou’. [;)]

Small question, where did you get the materials? I asked my wife to buy deluxe fly tying kits which include aa vise, bobbin, scissors and a whole bunch of stuff which i dont know its uses. I think its a complete box set. She’ll be leaving this Friday to Alfaretta,GA and later to NY. If the materials for fly is hard to come by, i’ll ask her to buy that too, along with fly box, foatants etc.

A long list… i just hope she didn’t bought the wrong items. Her fishing(especially fly) knowledge is… next to nothing

DarkAaron, I got my fly tying material in a tackle shop in Subang which specialise in fly fishing equipment and material. [:)]
Where is the nearest tackle shop at your place? Normally, most of tackle shop in town does not sell fly fishing material.[:(]

Lemme give u an idea. Instead of asking your wife to buy it for you, [:D], you can call up Tackle Box Nick @ 03-56370268 and order from him. Gif Nick your list and send over the $$ and Nick will post the stuff to you.. and your wife will have less headache!! [:)]

fisheR

Nearest…from KK, Sabah…would be… somewhere in Karamunsing or Asia City… but not much of a choice in terms of materials let alone the vise or any tying kits. I think i’ll plan my trip to KL and drop by at Tackle Box . … Now where is that AirAsia website…XP.

Thanks for the tip fisheR, and hopefully i can make my own shrimp fly, crazy charlie and other flies that i just found out on the net
