I got this book quite long time ago. Simplified Fly fishing by S.R Slaymaker. I think this book produced in the 60’s. There’s 2 version, look for one with Lefty Kreh foreword. Look how Slaymaker view fly fishing. Really good for beginner, like me at least. Fly fishing is not complicated sport but some people make it too comlicated

Trout bum , I will get the picture latter. If you google it you can find it, very cheap book. Some site got sample chapter you can read. Buy used one also can.
I haven’t read this book. But from the reviews gathered around the net, it seems that this is great bible for fly fishing beginners. Thanks for putting this up, Bro Alpocot.. [;)]
Fly fishing is hard but it’s not that hard. All people can learn & enjoy. Please do not be too much of a snob by labeling us ‘elite’. Other anglers would perceive that differently. Cheers. [;)]

It is not my intention here to put down anyone or to make fly fishing complicated or that it is an elite sport. I like to call it a “gentleman’s sport”.
Alpocat is right. This book is for beginners, but for way back in the 60’s. We are now almost in the 21st century. Zaman dah berubah. It is more canggih than before. By all means read this book if not just to see how and what fly fishing techniques was like some 50 years ago. There are now new techniques and new books put out for fly fishing beginners. Among them:
Lefty Kreh’s Ultimate Guide to Fly Fishing (published 2006)
Learn to Fly Fish in 24hrs by Robert J Sousa (2007)
Tom Deck’s The Orvis Fly-Casting Guide.
All have very useful information. None of these books teach the old style of ‘clock-face’. Recently Soon Lee, a US FFF Master Caster (whom I know personally) brought this matter up to the board of FFF, that learning to fly fish by this method (clock face) stiffens the casting style. Most of them - like Steve Rajeff, Bruce Richard , Chuck Easterling, Lasse Karlson, to name a few - agreed. Soon Lee also put up his article on FFF ‘The Loop’ website.
The latest casting technique is by the ‘arc’. For short distance the arc should be small and rod loading is at the tip; mid range cast requires a slightly wider arc; and obviously for longer range a much wider arc, bending the rod all the way into the butt section.
Just to give you an example. Before the best distance achieved was up to 80 to 90 feet only, with wt #5. Now, with the new technology and techniques of casting, distance casting can be achieved up to 125-137 feet with wt#5.
My philosophy is to go forward into the new century and to never stop learning, but also not to forget the old techniques. Like many of you, when I first started fly fishing, I read and watched videos. Thinking that I was already good, I went out with a fly fishing group. To my embarrassment I was really humbled when I found that I did all the wrong things. It was an eye opener. But this did not stop me from fly fishing. I looked for professionals to teach me and spent money and time to improve my casting techniques, learning about the basic fundamentals and styles. Along the way I created my own style of casting and this lead me to become a certified fly fishing instructor. Not forgetting I also picked up flytying.
As I mentioned earlier, it’s a “gentleman’s sport”, so guys relax, enjoy and be happy. [:D][;)][:o)]

Pak, what you are saying is quite true. Come to think of it…I started learning fly fishing with the “clock face” method. A cast using the clock face method is basically made up of a very small arc. So this limit the casting by quite a bit. In my opinion, this casting style works for short casting distance only. Pls correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks for the very useful reply Pak Amin. I do agree with about zaman dah berubah. The reason I suggested the book is because sometime we the beginner can’t really take to many thing at one time and Slaymaker give different prespective I at least embraced it because it quite easy to understand. As we gain more knowledge, like you said we can make this simple understanding for new techniques and method.
And I totally agree with you about “clock face” really stiffen our casting style compare to arc. But like I said before the “clock face” is very important for beginner before we introduce them to arc. Takda yg. lama, tak akan ada yg baru[:)]
Yes, it’s really important to learn from pro/expert if we are really serious to take up fly fishing, but for some people fly fishing is for hobby, and they don’t seem to take it too seriously about it.

We should promote FF… by introducing this book.. I think you also wanna promote FF… but try to promote it as a sport, not only hobby… baru lah FF oleh jadi besar di sini…

Cikgu Dron,
I think what Alpocot’s intention is to promote fly fishing in such a way where newbies do not feel threatened by all the techniques & jargons of it. Yes fly fishing is hard but it’s not that hard. So this is a way of making these new people to be closer to fly fishing. And labeling us ‘elite’ is obviously not one of the ways… [;)]
Once they’re in, maybe experienced fly anglers like Pak Amin (I can’t because I’m not certified by FFF), can show them the in depth view of this sports. They’ll stay if they have the substance. If they dont, let them be. Maybe fly fishing is not for them. But don’t give them first impression that fly fishing is rocket science.. [:)]
Actually we also can have a read on this. Eventho it won’t appeal to the seniors, at least they can gain some knowledge on how to see fly fishing from a different angle… [:D]

As what I have see from all those post… we are all talking about how FF should be.. how many type of casting in FF, far far should we cast, what flies work, how we should educate the next generation… why we practice Catch and release..form a FF club…
All of these means we are serious about FF and we should doing it like a sport.. with proper FF code…
I’m very proud to be a Fly Fisher… I guess all of you does… I believe we are all trying to promote it and hoping one day, FF will become one of the popular sport… ( cos if you look at the conventional fishing.. as a hobby.. what sort of mass.. a lot of fishing kaki bring home a whole ice box of small fish… )
That is why, I think.. fishing is a sport for serious FF or Jigger or Lure Caster or… instead of hobby only..

Had a discussion with some fishers today, looking at the FF in our region, the only qualified instructor will be Pak, but we can’t have Pak permanent in Kl to teach us about FF… thus, we were hopping that Pak can select and identify some good fly caster for freshwater and saltwater casting… so, with these FF ‘cikgu’ team… they can give proper ‘guidance’ to all beginner…
Hope to get full support from all… all are to cast and present in front Pak and let the best caster be select to lead this ’ cikgu team’…
Those who are good in roll cast, will give proper ‘guidance’ in roll cast… those who are good in distance, will only show how to cast far… of course, they will have to be totally scan and trained by Pak before they allow to give ‘guidance’ to the beginner…

'Coz I last heard about this enthusiasm one year plus ago when Fish Valley was just opened for fly fishing. They did have few meetings but for some reasons, the whole thing died down and got lost. I don’t know why…
All I can say is, if there’s any, I will help the best I can in contributing. That is if you guys let me lah. 'Coz I’m sure now “ramai orang” would love me to stay away from this club or society or whatever. Haha… [;)]

Bro Riki…there was every intention to include you and anyone else who would be interested. I believe i did mention this to you before right?
As Dron mentioned, this AFFM is not exclusive club for select few. It will be open to ALL fly fishers who are interested in joining.
Yes the idea started off almost a year ago. And yes it has somewhat died down.
Initially, Pak Amin & I were the ones who wanted to get this club up and running. There has been much talk before but nothing had happened. The main intention was to have ONE voice for all the fly fishers in Malaysia, so we could promote and expand this sport that we love so much. But without govt. support, honestly this club won’t be able to go very far, other than being just another recreational club.
So we went about and selected a few senior fly fishers to be members of a pro-tem committee tasked with the setting up of the club. We had a few meetings, to do up the club constitution and even during these inaugural meetings, we had people who would turn up whenever they liked or maybe not show up at all. Believe me…I am so disappointed at the lack of interest, from the seniors, no less. If Pak Amin can travel all the way from Singapore for meetings, why can these people?
Needless to say, after a while, I too lost the motivation to push the club forward. For that, I have to apologise.
Anyway, that is history…Recently, due to recent events, I believe even strongly now about the formation of this club so the newbies would no longer be misled.
At this point in time, I will check to make sure that all is in order for the registration of the club and I will proceed as soon as possible.

Frankly speaking, I’ve heard a few things about you too. True or not…I don’t know. But here is my principle…I always tell these people that I have not seen with my own eyes. I will not form an opinion of someone based on one side of the story. So I’ll still give you the benefit of the doubt.
