some lures

Hi,
my name is vincent. hope to learn from you guys here. [:)] Some of my lures are as below. Just some crude ones. Some are made from plastic floats, recently i’m doing more wood ones, using broom stick wood hehe. Anyone knows what wood are these wood ?
Also I found a can of Kimtone polyurethane stained varnish in the store room. anyone use it before ? can it go over Pylox spray paint and general purpose acrylic paint ?

edited…got the devcon 2 ton already.

my lures below,

some work in progress. …that piece of wood is supposed to be a walk-a-dog lure later.

i learn this from this site reading a thread two days ago. hehe..

welcome mcs,

v nice effort for a start

broom stick r no good, they r mostly of diff. wood species, maily lumber scrape - try to get ‘jelutong’ wood - those use for carving in school project

PU stained varnish takes a long time to cure n will turn ‘yellowish’

Thanks for the advice. will not try to top coat with that then. is it possible to use the polyurethane as sealer ? I currently use lacquer sealer, but the smell is very strong. The jelutong wood… i haven’t go look for it yet. let me play with broomstick wood for the time being. quite true, the lure is not fast rising enough and doesn"t wobble easily.
I completed 2 of the 3 unfinished lures that day and… one of the lures got some cracks after knocking onto some rocks, the other one won"t dive and spiral. so those failed.
I made these recently. haven’t test yet

The black one looks to be a winner Vincent, I like the color scheme u did on it.

PU can be used as sealer but u have to look at the label carefully. Try looking for the type that is intended for outdoor use or stated clearly as waterproof.

If you would like to keep using broom stick, try looking for the ones that are the lightest in the bin, usually very pale color wood. Those might work better for cranks and floating lures. The quality of broom sticks are usually from mixed wood which will not you give consistency from one lure to another.

I’ve tried the polyurethane already, and it wasn’t good, although still usable. It is easier to apply smoothly but it has a smell too which didn"t go away after 2 or 3 weeks. a second coat caused a bit of wrinkles. and it take quite long time to dry indeed. give up hehe…
I’ve white primer/sealer as alternative . does anyone use before shellac as sealer ?

The small black lure above cast quite well, but doesn’t have enough wiggle, it weight near 20g. I caught a small toman with it cranking at a spot which is quite featureless, just sand or mud. the lure died when i hooked up discarded fishing lines and decided not to retrieve it. it was at a different spot.
The lure below it caught a catfish one night.with one miss. The action is acceptable, i will try to replicate this lure..and the last lure…doesn"t work that well. i’ve made a new version.

These are the recent ones just completed.

the first lure is not tested. hope it can walk on the surface. The second lure is a scaled down version of the earlier popper. It cast well. hehe… but the second devcon coating was a bit disappointing. The last lure doesn’t have enough wiggle when tested, but i completed it anyway. The wood of that stick of broomstick is good, i use it to make all the above lures. another stick was a lot denser and couldn’t do floating lures.

i"ll have to go really slow after this..
thks for viewing…

Way to go mcs, I can see some improvements over your 1st. Keep it up and you’ll be as poor as I am buying all he lure making materials and tools LOL

1st pic looks like a classic Zara Spook lure. They are usually weighted to float at 15° and glide.

3rd minnow looks like my seluang lure heh heh. it’ll need a slightly longer lip as a guess.

hahaha…no more buying…I hope. yes i took measurements from my super spook, but i made it with 2 hook. the foil pattern is by rolling a handle of a tool over the foil, copy a Luhr-jensen Jerk’n Sam lure. I might have seen the seluang lure before, maybe same pink colour or the lateral line looks similar, i think. by the way, seluang is what fish ar ?

just completed 2. After seeing bro spook’s prawn, I also make one to test. hehe…
Initially, I wanted to make a grey prawn, but I can’t get the colours right, so change to tiger prawn ,easier to paint. Like to know for real live grey prawns vs tiger prawns, which type are generally more effective for fishing ? It is an experimental one. I notice the prawns always shoot backwards when netcasting, and can see it at the water surface. I will probably tow it by the tail, but I will try to reverse it to see if it is possible. It has 2 bearing rattles. It will be sinking due to the denser wood, floating ones was what I had in mind. A carved tail might reduce casting distance,so i will probably just tie some threads to the trebles, to simulate tail or legs. I have thought of using a transparent/painted polycarbonate lip for a tail too, but didn’t implement. The eyes are bought from a hobby craft store, I didn’t make those. It weighs 30g+.

The other lure has been tested before painting and probably won’t wobble well, but again, I completed it. hehe…will have to look deeper into how to get these lures to wobble more effectively. i’m using glow in the dark acrylic paint to see if it is effective.

mcs

guess its time to do away w those ‘broom stick’ material
if u cant get jelutong, try scout at photo frame shop for those ‘poster frame’ wood, normally comes in 12mm thick x 40/50mm width x 2m long
used those before, pretty light n soft

mcs, nice prawn so far.. u can add the legs and feelers of the prawn by poking a tiny hole with a pin. and expoxy brown mono line inside. or feathers for the legs.

I bought some jelutong wood last week. haven’t carved any new lures with those yet.

ok noted. I"ll leave it as it is for this one. when i make a new one, i’ll try to include the legs. The front legs ,which are longer, seems tricky though. If i make popper with prawn shape, then i may exclude the legs and feelers.

mcs,

once u carve jelutong wood
bet u will never go back to ‘broom stick’ [:D]

merely RM 0.20 per stick

and since this is for an UNO STACKO games, its have a perfect balance and shape

pens, that is a good idea. Looks like the size for some L-minnows shape lures.

some lures I made recently. Made from picture frame wood. these three has enough wobble but didn’t cast well. First one is easy to reel back, maybe because it is a very shallow diver. The side is gift wrapping material. The last lure would be better if the belly hook eye is more to the front abit, I can’t use a larger size treble because of that.

the last of the broomstick series. lost it already.

MCS- Your lures get better with each reply, keep it up and you will be hooked well and truly. Keep playing with them and you will come up with a shape that will consistently swim for you. pete

Down HERE we have to think out of the box.

yep true…

its amazing to see your determination
