In Pancing there was an article where one can attach leads to the flies and use a spinning reel to cast flies. My question is, can any flies do or it has to be specific types eg Crazy Charlies… etc… coz I saw some flies by Tomman selling at Ah Boy’s and wonder if those will do…
the trick is to try to spin fly withour the lead, however small to get the “floating” fly effect. Adding lead to enable you to cast but will also result to a sinking fly. If that is your intentions, then most sinking fly would do.

i assume that u are using light spinning tackle for spinfly. spinfly has it’s limitation. spinfly is OK for sinking/sub-surface flies (wet fly or streamers) becos you’ll need to add some lead to aid casting. ultimately the lead will sink and bring the fly down into the water (as wet flies & streamers are supposed to be used under the water surface).
it’s almost impossible for you to present a dry fly with spin fly tackle where the dry is supposed to float on the water surface
Ok please excuse my newbie question then… how does one identify a sinking fly from a floating one? And can a floating one function as a sinking one simply by just adding a weight?
mind me if i am generalizing. from my shallow understanding of fly-fishing:
if u are referring to fly lines, MOST(if not all) floating lines are in bright colours while MOST sinking lines are in darker shades(grey, black, dark green) or even transparent/translucent
if u add weight(split shots) to a floating line, it would be hard to cast(although some fly fishers do add some split shot to their tippets in some situations) and presentation of the fly would be jeopardized. the tip portion(fly, weights, tippet & leader) would sink, but the rest of the fly line would float. at the most, it would be something short of a sink-tip line.

WAR: it’s not about who’s RIGHT, it’s about who’s LEFT
One good way to spinfly is to use a clear float which can be filled with water to adjust the “weight” for casting and its flotability. These are clear plastic floats which are used esp. with nymphs, adjusted to trundle along the rocky bottom to fish for trout. I suppose one could even use a dry fly in this setup, tho’ the difficulty would be to present the fly in such a way as to avoid drag so the dry floats naturally along.
Small PBs can easily be caught this way … Sikangs too, I’m sure.![]()

hypersushi,
You can try tying this Craft fur candy and add extra weight or even put in a bullet weight ( jig head weight ) on your leader…

bro dronLee,
I’m very exited now after seeing your designs for weighted flies…I’ve been testing some flies for casting for salthwater species…all flies were courtecy of our resident pro Topek…have so far caught some selar & baracuda only…previously using a white coloured sinker attached to 1.5’ leader & 3" wire attached to one ar two set of flies.
Will definitely get Topek to use your design…thanks bro.

You are now going into the area of casting Rapalas lah.[:D]… when “lalats” become too big and too heavy, they hatch into “Rapalas”…you donno meh?[:D]

aiyooo latok…jangan itu macam loooo, these are fly derivatives, hence the ‘spin fly’ category..he.he.he.
I like the idea of weighted fly since I no longer have to attach a sinker in order to get the distance, sometime the sinker yang kena hentam dulu, esp when at sea, even when I’m already using a white coloured sinker, on the hindsight, the sinker & hook combo, or reckon they called it the hongkong hook/lure might worth trying

Dron, ive been seeing all your posting on flies and ure indeed very very talented bloke in both handwork and ideation. Looking at your sketches, it tells me a lil that u r from a design background ? or simply talented in all ways..ehehe..including your photography skills…amazing kudos to u.Not to mention those craft lures are simply a beauty, i know its gonna do its trick on sebaraus and PBs without a doubt..cheers mate

hi friends ,master dron is indeed talented in designing flies as well as in his other skills.one can also use spin flies to catch small fish like bulus because there are no specialised crankbait lures available which are small enough to catch them with .small sized apollo jigs can be used but the tangled mess they become is too much to handle.according to ken, he has caught many bulus and other bottom fishes with small bloodworm flies in port dickson using a sinking line.i will give it a try when i have the time to see how well it works.cheers…
subang
bro…bulus fly? ada gambar? appreciate if you share…thanks

Oakinn latok dictator,
Joke, joke onli lah.[:)] Here’s another thing to try if spinflying in the sea…use a hookless popper type lure…just main line to popper and line from popper to saltwater fly. This will give you the weight to cast. If you do not want the fella to pop, turn the popper around…sure to work one.[:D]

Talking about spinflying, i stumbled into spinfly rod specifically designed for it by Lemax at Kepong Tackle the other day. The butt looks like ordinary spin rod but the rest is thin and soft like a fly rod - cool. The one i saw was 9’ WT 7 or 9. The price was above RM100++. The good thing is that you can use it as ultra light rod fishing for Bulus or small groupers, i am sure it will bend like hell!
spin fly?
keep it simple la bro… you can use whatever fly pattern you want, not necessary the floating ones. as far you can cast it out (and presenting your lure to the fish), whether it was sinking, cannot float or sangkuting, never mind hantam sajalah… dun get into complicated issues coz if the fish wants to hantam, whatever pon dia hantam jugakkk…
so far I have been applying spin fly technique years ago, from paypond to open seas, from belida and pacu to juvenile GT. clousers is just fine and small buah kana sinker can cast you a mile away…

There is a wonderful technique that I used a very very very long time ago. When my memory is correctly it must be around 1976-1977 and 1978 when I participate to a lot of fishing marathons in Germany. (fishing 48 hours on row). In those days I fished fly only in Scandinavian countries during my holidays but not in Holland and Germany. However as a real fanatic fly fisherman also I was very creative with float, spinning and Match rods of course. So I used a piece of fly line as a float for my Match and spinning rod and that’s exactly how I won 9 out of 15 marathon competions! This technique also works perfectly to fish with flies with a spinning or match rod! All you need is a piece of fly line and know how to connect it between your monifilament and you can fly fish with a any spinning or match rod!
It’s really great for kids too and the step to real fly fishing is usual made a lot faster too

Hans,
Floating fly lines for dry flies and sinking fly lines for wet flies?
No weights/shot needed?
Suggested/recommended length of fly line to be used?
Seems a very convenient solution/replacement for the water bubble.
Will it work for braided lines as well, as opposed to mono?
Thanks,
alan
from my experience, the main line can be braids but the leader/tippet line should be mono. small diameter mono tends to float better and specialized leader such as those fancy fluorocarbon ones are great.
